Latino Congressman on House Floor about Donald Trump on SNL: “If Donald Trump Said Gays Were Murderers and Raping Americans, Would He Get to Host"

“When public figures cross certain lines, they should lose their privileges to host TV shows. At least until they have apologized for their unacceptable behavior,†Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) said this morning in a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives about NBC’s plans for Donald Trump to host Saturday Night Live.

 

“Installing Trump as SNL host may be good for ratings, but it is a bigger deal than a cameo or a Tonight Show guest [appearance]. And I’m calling you out,†Gutierrez said to NBC, standing next to a card with the hashtag #RacismIsntFunny.

 

“If Donald Trump had said gays and lesbians were murderers and raping Americans, would he get to host the show?†Gutierrez taunted.

 

“Trump has said some pretty awful things about women, individually and collectively – but what if he said most women were criminals? Would the writers be thinking up sketches for Trump if he had slandered an entire gender rather than an entire ethnic group?â€

 

Continuing to pile on, Gutierrez asked, “What if he said black people were murderers, rapists and drug-dealers, would you still pitch skits with Donald Trump in some lighthearted banter?â€

 

“I just want to say one last thing to [Canada-born] producer Lorne Michaels,†Gutierrez concluded. “I wonder, if he had said Canadians were rapists, murderers and drug dealers, would you be inviting him†to host the show.

We’ve reached out to NBC for comment.

Unfortunately it's true. I was at the bus stop one day and an older black lady came up to me and started saying a bunch of racist stuff to me but not a single person came to defend me or told the lady she was being racist. Now if I had been a black kid and she had been a white woman someone would have said something for sure. 

A lot of people may not admit it but being openly racist against Latinos is more acceptable than we would like to believe.

You're not making sense. Most of the time racism between non-white people goes ignored. Had you been the one spewing racist stuff, more than likely it would go ignored as well. If it doesn't involve a white person being the oppressor, society doesn't care.

 

While the anti-Latino sentiment is strong in the US, it doesn't remove antiblackness out of the equation either. Both groups can (and still do) have to deal with bigots on a mass scale, even in media.

Silly apples to oranges comparisons would normally result in Congressmen being laughed off of the House floor. But since we prefer to ignore reality and construct utopian fantasy realms to live in, he can get away with such nonsense.

I'm not implying that African Americans are not victims of racism or that they don't face worse things than other minorities precisely because of their history in this country, no. All I'm saying is that at least where I live being racist against Hispanics and Latinos in open places is kind of normalized. I have been victim of racism by white people many times in open areas and no one spoke up in any of those cases. I even had a job application thrown in my face once while the manager told me to go back to Mexico and people just stared and pretended to be deaf. There have been cases where white police officers harassed latino teens in my community too but no local media ever picked up those stories.

There are many black, white, mestizo, mulatto, Asian, and Native Hawaiian Hispanics and Latinos people.  Hispanics and Latinos are a very diverse racial groups of people.

Racism against Latinos is not seen as a problem in part because Latinos haven't combated it the ways blacks and gays have. Same goes for Asians.

This reminds me of how ethnic groups from Muslim backgrounds are viewed in Europe, though I don't think Latinos have it as bad.

I do agree on what he said. It's sad how the media always making black as victims (not all the time) by white. It's unfair that certain ethnic groups get picked on and thinking it's acceptable. Fuck double standard and Trump!
