Article: "Kids get free tuition if parents are an exchange student" ... Gangnam mothers in their forties head to Canada for school

Source: Chosun Ilbo via Naver

Article talks about how Gangnam mothers are heading to Canada after hearing about a law where study permits are granted to parents that enroll in public colleges which then grants their children free tuition from elementary to high school. Korean families are looking into this as an opportunity to cut down costs on having their children study abroad.

1. [+5,092, -523] Parents like them used to get hate back then... but in the hellish state Korea is in now, I just see them as people trying to escape to survive...

2. [+4,228, -175] I hope this doesn't foster anti-Korean sentiment by Canadians..

3. [+4,270, -337] Honestly I'd do it if I could do something liket his for my kid

4. [+2,798, -172] Gangnam mothers are starting the trend of escaping Hell Korea

5. [+778, -14] I'm a student studying abroad in Canada... and this is so selfish of Koreans. This law was implemented to support young mothers going back to school and it's being abused like this? That means the law will be taken back and the people who really need this support will lose it. Obviously these mothers are well off since they live in Gangnam already, stop trying to take more of what isn't yours.

6. [+538, -21] These Gangnam mothers are going to embarrass us internationally

7. [+489, -10] I think the country should step in on things like this and restrict it. It's just a nuisance to the Canadians to deal with.

8. [+385, -31] So these mothers are trying to get into Canadian colleges in their forties... to send their kids to Canadian junior and high schools.. while the poor father's back home in Korea working and living alone to support it.

college? who needs it tbh!

and anyone judging this mother is what you call stupid, shes obviously broke and can't afford the intuition, it makes perfect logical sense to go to a place where it is free, people judging her are just annoying she ain't breaking no law!!!

This is quite selfish to the mothers who actually need the help, over here its setup to help struggling single mothers not rich ones who don't need it.  Plus tuition in Canada especially Ontario is super high already so this is not fair to regular students or struggling ones who cant pay for it a complete abuse of the system this is not right

I honestly think that's a pretty horrible thing to do. Nothing is free, and the Canadian public end up paying for that education system with taxes that are already high. People abusing the system like this just to save themselves money is really disappointing; the children will move back to Korea and the money Canadians have invested in their educations will be lost to a different community.

Rude tbh. Honnestly i have no probleme with you to come live her but don't go back to korea after.

If a kid move to canada they should be a overtime financial penalty for them to move back where there from.

Canada is one of the best coutry for asian and other race to move too. Don't break that.

the immigration law is weird.. children of international students go to school for free & their spouses get work permits.. while people who are married to canadians aren't allowed to study or work until they are accepted as citizens. basically they're stuck with nothing to do & the process drags on for years.

The law is intended mainly for ppl doing higher studies like docs

International students pay full price for education (my uni = 30 000$/semester)

Thats what i thought. Why would you try to be a cheapskate when you are already rich??

Taking advantage of a loophole i guess .. This is pretty sad TBH we pay taxes(13%) for kids to go to elem and high school for free and some of them run off back to their country and do shiz..

But college is pretty still pretty expensive and all <.<
