it depends, if the person is smart/get good grades then I would respect

but if it's some lazy ass then nope

but still, I think paying attention = respect to the teacher so I prefer that the smart person is paying attention because that means respect but it's ok

I don't know if I feel disrespect towards them, but I do feel a lot of annoyance. In my oceanography class, there's this group of about 4 people who just keep talking even if the teacher is talking and tells them to stop. It's annoying and I get pissed that they're so disrespectful towards everyone else like that.

I am an example of the student that doesn't pay attention in class if my teacher is boring or teaching something I already know but my grades are high because of outside class studying. I still remember the looks my classmates gave me when I corrected a teacher on his mistake he made indirectly.

I tend to get underestimated a whole lot  :ahmagah:

yes, because they might have a mental disability that make it hard for them to pay attention in class. Plus who says you absolutely NEED to stare at the teacher while they're teaching or actively take notes for it to count as paying attention? Everyone has different learning styles. I've known people who could sleep through the entire class and still know what was taught because they were auditory learners and therefore was able to remember everything said. As for me, I used to doodle while listening to my teachers teach, and doodling in class has been scientifically linked to improving and boosting focus and memory.

Usually the people at my class who don't pay attention wouldn't get good grades, they are just there for the sake of it.

I don't care if they pay attention or not, just don't disturb me while listening/paying attention.

In short: Don't disturb me.

i find it hard to focus in class so i am one of those people who tend to not pay attention in class.

but i know better to be quiet, minding my own business than bothering other people.

so i am indifferent towards them unless they're being loud and disruptive.

I'm a geoscience major and I've also had oceanography. It's generally an intro-level class, and much of geology at that level is very intuitive to boot. In my experience it covered the basics of earth science, climate, biology in the oceans. The worst that can happen is that you get someone that's capable of making that interesting topic boring. If in doubt, simply go to the first class or talk to the professor.
