How do you feel about the increasing westernization of kpop producers?

I know that groups from the big companies like SM have used western producers for a long time now, but it seems like lately even groups from smaller companies like Oh My Girl have started to rely more and more on foreign producers for their music.

Do you welcome this new trend, or do you miss the days when kpop songs were still produced by Koreans trying to copy those foreign producers? :imstupid:

I'm not entirely sure. If there are good songs then it's nothing to worry about as a fan, but it sort of reminds me of how when people start outsourcing jobs then it leaves little room for people from the country to actually get work. I think there will always be Korean producers and composers used but the growing trend of western ones does further raise the question of professional integrity and national pride.

Edit: *national pride concerning the music industry

I agree with you there. If there are no Koreans involved in making it, is it truly Korean music anymore, even if it's sung in Korean?

I give zero support to cultural keeping tbh. Imo if you want a korean to do it then a korean should give them what there looking for. If they can't then to bad.

Beside were nit the artist or the company. If they feel they have better producer for what they're looking for in europe then, so be it.

is there really? Can you list notable examples this year?

Off the top of my head, I can think of Oh My Girl and 9muses who(se companies) have switched to mainly foreign producers. JYP's acts have been using a lot more foreigners too, for example every single song on Twice's mini has at least one non-Korean producer.

i care about the finished product. If the song doesn't give off too much mainstream Western vibe, like 'oh it sounds like a top 40 US/UK song' then i'm ok. I always assume songs with complex combination of music samples, random as fuck rap parts with addictive hook r either Kpop or US/UK indie

It's not like it's a recent trend though, some of the most iconic kpop songs like Sorry Sorry, Mirotic are from western producers...tbh I dunno, on one hand they probably do it so it pleases the i-fans more as kpop gets more western fans but yeah as someone said, at what point can it even be considered 'kpop' anymore when everything is outsourced, from the song to the lyrics to the dance?

Tbh if you compare a Kpop song made by a western producer and an actually western song they still sound different, let's take Oh My Girl for example, even if their tracks were produced by western people, they totally made it Kpop/Asian like, because i heard some of their side tracks in their album and they sound nothing life western songs people usually listen, i usually listen, or like some people here said, top 40/30 UK/US chart.

What i feel about this?

Indifferent, nothing change much, plus if you see western producers that start to produce for Kpop, it only means they're not good enough to produce for actual western artists tbh, but in fact i find Kpop songs made by western artists more catchy, so there's a positive thing for me :)
