how real is racism in SK?

I know that Sam is all over k-variety, but you don't see a lot of foreigners on tv that aren't also Asian or white.  KBS does have a show called "My Friend Charles" that is about foreigners living in SK.  I don't usually watch that one, but the thumbnail had a black man so I was curious and I just finished watching it.  The blatant racism is so real, and when it's directed at his kids it's heart breaking.

I just wanted to share this, because the ending shows the family after they have received some media exposure and people seem to more positive towards them (could also be due to selective editing).  Awareness is such a big key to any issue.

(my intentions here are 100% sincere, I'm not trying to shame anyone, just share something that I thought was really interesting)

Racism is everywhere not only in sk,but yes ! those young kids needs to be taught that there are different kind of people with different skin color in this world

that's a capital "T" Truth.

at one point the kids are playing in a ball pit and some other kid asks the son "when are you leaving" (this is after some parents had already removed their kids from where the daughter was playing) and his response was "I was born here".  that whole thing just broke my heart.

Honestly, the only way to stop racism is to be more aware and educated on how wrong it is.

Those kids calling him out on him being black was just a result of their lack of knowledge on the matter, which can only be the fault of their parents.

Yes, racism is everywhere but it's obviously going to be more prevalent in a homogeneous society like South Korea. I'm still pretty shocked they wouldn't teach their children their native tongue. The Ivory Coast or even a country like France seems like a better place to live for their family, both parents would probably have better income and their children wouldn't have to be ostracized they way they are now. Since the kids are still young it would be easy for them to pick up another language even if they did move...

It's good that there is a show like this to shed so light on the struggles that foreigners in Korea have to face daily. But Korea still seems pretty ignorant a lot of things outside of their country.

I can't imagine being born in a country and not feeling like you even belong there...

I was going to say something, but then I noticed that you were specifically speaking about the family in the video and not in general.

Certain parts really stung, but it was nice looking into the family life of black people in Korea.

Actually, any time a racist scandal comes up, I'm commenting. I'm not going to help perpetuate the "ignorance" because families like this don't need that.

Yea, I don't think all Koreans are racist or anything like that.

I cried watching Sum's episode. Mostly for the kids but for them as well.i think western countries are a bit more used to it

I don't imagine parents taking their kids away so they don't play with Issac in my country

I think it's more obvious and occuring in SK mostly because they have just recently begun taking in all sorts of foreigners and they are not familiar with it. They probably only have movies and those Africa is poor documentaries to rely on.

There were plenty of people at Sum's work place and the owner of Flora's working place that learned they are no different. The ahjummas in Yesan made me smile.

I hope they open their minds and hearts to learn more and then teach their youngests.

The whole episode broke my heart.
