Why did JYP not have the foresight to cast an English-speaking member in TWICE?

In addition to being top tier groups in Korea, a big part of the reason that 2NE1 and SNSD were able to expand their audience more globally than other groups is because they had members that can carry an interview in English. SNSD's US blitz with "The Boys", 2NE1's multiple appearances on American TV and online media outlets leading to CL's eventual US crossover. These things were only possible because they had English-fluent members in Tiffany and CL.

If TWICE becomes a supergroup in Asia, they will catch the attention of some western media outlets. But with no English-speaking members in the lineup, their avenues will be more limited.

Why did JYP not take this into consideration when he had at least 3 girls on SIXTEEN who could speak English, 2 of them being perfectly suitable candidates (Minyoung and Somi)? It's mind-boggling considering that every other JYP group has one or several members that speak English.

I think mina speak eng

mina can speak english

That's a rumor. We've not heard her speaking full English sentences afaik and her pronunctiation in songs is as fobby as the other members. I don't believe she's fluent.

it's because JYP doesn't think

I think mina speak eng

people say that, but I don't think she's fluent if she does speak english. like, we actually have clips and writing that show us that Minyoung a d Somi speak english but Mina has never spoken english, only japanese.

I dont know. Maybe JYP has bad experience with promoting in America.

But that didn't stop him from casting 3 English-speaking members in GOT7 (which I don't believe was a coincidence) and 2 in DAY6.

Having an accent when speaking has absolutely nothing to do with fluency. Many of my non-native English speaking professors have accents when they speak English yet they are fluent in English. Fluency is the ability to read, speak, and write in a language proficiently.

Probably because JYP knows what happened last time he tried to make it in the US (WG... such a waste!) and he decided it's more important to focus on more local markets, namely Korea and Japan. They have Tzuyu for China/Taiwan if they ever decide to expand there. If one day they do get big enough to be interviewed by english-speaking people, using a translator will be fine imo.
Btw even if they have no native English-speaking member, it's not like none of the members can speak it. They'll learn it more intensely if it's ever needed. WG didn't have a native english speaking member either when they went to the US...

She might be conversational level, but she's still a fob. That's not appealing to American audiences. CL and Tiffany sound close to an average American when they speak English.

Yes we haven't heard Mina speak english. Someone asked Mina's mom (on instagram) if she can speak english, and her mom said she can, but not really that fluent. But still, she can speak basic english. Mina was able to learn Korean, so in the future, she'll be fluent in English too, if she keeps on practicing/studying (e.g Sooyoung).

Somi was too young :(

Minyoung was not popular enough :(

He should've just chosen Somi at the finale instead of ressurecting Momo. Somi was only a few months away from being of age and with 8 other members in the group, it would've been easy to work around that for a few months. The only restriction on idols under 15 is that they can't perform after a certain time at night without consent from a parent or guardian. It would've been worth it to have a member who speaks English fluently. JYP wasn't thinking long-term.

Mina is Japanese-American...

I keep hearing conflicting things about this...exactly how long did she live in the States? Different idols have spent different amounts of time there, and saying "Asian-American" implies having lived there from a very young age (e.g. Mark, Wendy).

exactly and also there is someone that is Somi's age in April so I don't think age should have been a problem.

twice already have Mina as a dancer I don't think Momo was needed imo

I just imagine that she would have been a cute maknae for Twice. But JYP had other project for TWICE, Momo and her so...

let's hope she will debut soon!

Idk about Mark but Wendy wasn't even that young when she moved to Canada. She was like 10.

she wasn't good enough tbh... JYP himself said multiple times that she looked like an amateur next to the other members ?

LOL I liked Somi but thank god she didn't get in Twice because fans like you would've overhyped the fuck out of her and completely disregarded the other girls.

Somi wasn't even particularly that good in anything. If anyone was deserving of that spot it was Minyoung or Jiwon. They had power vocals and would've brought something new to the group. What was Somi going to bring?
