Is it blackface?

I've heard/seen many people say that regardless of reasoning or intention, darkening your skin to portray a black person is blackface, and is a racist action. So, I'm curious what you guys think.

If a light-skinned black person, like Chris Brown for example, darkened his skin to portray a darker-skinned black person, Kanye West for example, is that also blackface? And is it racist?

this is the rant that got me thinking, and she isn't the first i've seen with this opinion

blackface is when someone paints their skin tone of an african american's in order to portray them in a negative and stereotypical light

just because someone paints themselves black isn't blackface unless it's with that intention

um no because they're both black???

The world is too PC.

ikr? it's so annoying.

How can it be racist if it's not done with the intentions of being directed at a race?

This is a serious question, btw. ;;

IMO, it's not lol especially if there's no stereotypical actions but I wanted to know how others felt

Blackface isn't just "painting your face black".  It's not even just "painting your face black to look like a black person".  It's painting your face black to affect racial stereotypes in a certain parody style which was popularised by minstrel shows and vaudeville.

Look it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

The blog is wrong.  People need to learn some history before they spout their shitty opinions on the Internet.  What a better world it would be if people researched on topics before they posted on blog sites.

EDIT; DOWNVOTES LOL.  Gee, so sorry for actually doing research, educating your dumb asses and forcing you to think a bit deeply.

how come bi-racial people (like chris brown who is half white) are usually only regarded as black?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule  basically.

There's historical precedent for biracial people being considered black which wormed its way into our culture...and for now more or less stays.

Exactly. It's like people going batshit over gd when he painted his whole face black lol. He wasn't being racist or anything; he was just portraying his feelings in that mv.

Blackface is really only offensive to me when it portrays black people in a negative light. Even then I have more shit to worry about then crucifying every ignorant person that does blackface.

...Chris brown is like 3/4th's black though.

If it's to portray black people in a negative light or only to portray stereotype, than yes

The one thing I don't understand is why do people don't consider whiteface racist? There are a lot examples of this and people barley bait an eyelash at it.

white face isnt the same, white face isnt dehumanising

Guess what? FUCK YOU, Colton Haynes, and FUCK YOU everyone who is defending him. If you’re going to quote the dictionary definition of racism at those of us who are trying to tell you he is WRONG, then FUCK YOU TOO. Because the dictionary was written by a bunch of white people thanks.

Oh, Ok.

Check your colours, black IS dark. White IS light. Evil is often represented with red, in chritianism for example. Black is dark and the colour of shadows. It's colour symbolism.

Not everything has to do with people's skincolour jfc.

Well I find wearing someone's race as a costume to be offensive. It's less offensive than someone who does it to portray stereotypical views of black people and to humiliate them and it's not going to make me hate someone forever but it's still offensive. I don't think it would be right to tell people they don't have the right to be offended just because you don't feel offended and usually the people that defend it can come off as more offensive.

Anyway I don't think it would be the same level of offensive in the Chris Brown situation because he wouldn't be trying to come off as another race or to represent a race that he isn't part of. Still, trying to wear someone skin is a bit weird.
