It was reported on October 11 by the Japanese media that the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) will no longer be airing Korean dramas.

According to the report, the network first started airing Korean dramas in April 2003 with “Winter Sonata.†However, after the drama “Empress Ki†finishes airing, NHK has decided to cease airing any further Korean dramas. One industry professional said of the limits of Korean dramas, “Japanese people are starting to feel that more recent dramas [coming to Japan] lack the passionate love that they remember from ‘Winter Sonata.’â€

Another writer added, “Of course in Korea young actors are popular, but they don’t resonate much with the older fans in Japan.†She added that she didn’t think there were many idols or young actors who could successfully follow in the footsteps of the so-called “Four Gods of Hallyu,†Bae Yong JoonLee Byung HunWon Bin, and Jang Dong Gun.

Japanese broadcaster FujiTV has actually come under fire before for broadcasting too many Korean dramas. Hate speech is prevalent in Tokyo’s Korea Town neighborhood, and in general the growing atmosphere of anti-Korea sentiment has led to the downward trend of Korean media consumption in Japan.

We all know some of the reasons above smell slightly like bullshit. I do think it has more to do with history and politics.

Although, on a fair note, there is no denial of the steep decrease in popularity of the Hallyu wave which does include Korean TV and Film.

So basically K-dramas aren't popular anymore. Not surprised though... I feel the same too. Some new dramas might be nice to watch but it doesn't give the same feeling as before (I got into dramas in 2007 and mostly watched K-dramas from 2004-2005 and after). I don't think this is about nostalgia, it really isn't the same feeling :/ I love K-dramas from 2004 to 2010 or so. Of course some dramas after that are good too (and probably from before too but I don't remember watching dramas from 2003 and earlier). idk There was something better about the storylines, the script, the acting, it was more touching or funnier. Of course there was boring dramas too back then, not everything was good. But I'm speaking overall. Well, K-dramas are still popular in China apparently.

The first explanation just sounded like a long way to say ratings are down. Which if ratings are actually down it makes sense to pull the dramas off the air.

But if it's really because of anti-korea sentiment then they need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Winter sonata was really good. Even my mom was watching this drama passionately.

My mom hates the newer k-dramas.

K-dramas are bland and repetitive, generally there is a bunch of crapy J-drama but one good J-drama overshadowsall the supposed good K-dramas. Sure production maybe be low but storyline and acting is always better. But I get what they are saying it us normally the older generation that watch K-dramas and they don't know these younger actors.

They could just have said that the ratings are low, lmao

Yeah and I understand why. The storys are most of the time the same. There is no evolution. The only dramas worth watching are on cable TV. Looks like the korean wave really hit rock bottom.

Really?

Although I think their teen popular drama's are very hard to stomach for non-asian audiences. They otherwise have some great dramas and are much much more versatile and diverse.

the few japanese dramas i have seen  had an open ending. It was very unsatisfying to me.

I am hispanic and I have a few friends that have randomly told me they love kdramas. They are not into kpop or anime they just found kdramas and really like them. My mom watches kdramas but she has issues with the lack of intensity in their kisses   I think the typical telenovela audience really likes kdramas. A lot of them get dubbed in Spanish so that says a lot.

the thing with korean dramas and indian dramas (i know it's irrelevant ut I'm just comparing) is that the plot lines are ALMOST ALWAYS the same, there's horrendous overacting, too much of that whole "flower boy" and "rude and rich sexy boy" thing going on and basically, i knew lesser and lesser people would care about k-dramas. kpop's popularity is going down too. sayonara hallyu
