Its not that bad :D Not their usual sound just different, but yeah a lot of people don't like it.

No problem. I'm glad they got through that phase and are back to the rock-ish stuff. The new single is the best in my eyes since Haruka. A year ago I wondered if I were to lose my interest in them but they managed to hold me with Queens and Encore Show.

Encore Show in particular has me hooked despite all songs being "old" B-sides.

Yeah their new single captured my interest immediately!

I still haven't listened to Queens yet but I've heard snippets of it and its definitely more rockfish which I like. It reminded me of Kagerou. As for Encore I still have to do the same. Thing is I'm in school and busy or lazy because almost all Japanese stuff gets taken down so I don't search for audios as much. I feel like a bad fan for not knowing most of their b-sides sometimes.

I also didn't know 90% of the B-sides before listening to Encore Show. lol So don't feel bad. The girls have churned out quite a lot in the last 6 years and it gets more really fast.

Haruna is great isn't she? She's cool and mysterious but also kinda awkard and shy in some situations. That's a interesting combinaton to me. And her voice is one of the reasons I even got into Scandal.

I didn't know there were so many fans that didn't like Baby action :(

Tbh, it took me a while to listen to it, but after I did I was really into so many songs.

One of their best albums IMO

 

 

About the new single, I watched the MV and I really liked it, I'm just waiting play-asia to announce it to get Type-B 

Different strokes for different folks. ;) I really love all the singles from BA (Pride, Haruka, Love Survive) but the album only songs just don't do it for me. I don't know...most of them sound too pop-y and cutesy for me. Except for Burn, that song is dope.

That was great. Usually you don't hear much of the bass in these recordings. This pretty raw take was nice for a change.

Thanks for those numbers. Awanai is doing good, rightfully so. Seems I wasn't the only one who disliked Pin Heel Surfer. It's good to see that the Japanese buyers have some taste. Now I understand why the new single is so much more rock again than Pin Heel. They tried something new and it fall flat on its ass, and I'm glad it did.

Meh... Not my cup of tea. Sounds too pop-ish for me and reminds me of Pin Heel. Luckily this is just one of the B-side songs. The important stuff (A-side) is still pending.

Kagen no Tsuki doesn't blow me away but I like it. Tomomi's bass is especially noteworthy and gives the song some raw texture over the lighter keyboard and strings. It reminds me of some more pop-ish songs from Encore Show. Weather Report on the other side is rather forgettable,imo. Maybe it's the low quality of the rip but I don't feel it.

I'm on the fence with OVERDRIVE. The song sounds nice but the full-on singing of all members at the same time is something to getting used to for me.

Well....I can honestly say this song is one Scandal's worst

It sounds like a hot ass mess.....how can you have a song like Overdrive and then this together

I feel really bad saying this as a Scandal fan cause I like them lots...but I barely finish listening to the thing.

I honestly expected a good song having a name like that.....

 

What is this shit?! Sorry for being blunt but this is probably the worst song I had the misfortune to listen to the whole year. This is not only the worst song by Scandal by far (some of the Almond Crush songs and PHS were pretty bad too, imo) but a disgrace to music itself.

 

Oh Kami-sama, please, don't let them go down this route!

Is it bad I laughed at your reaction  For some reason I imagined someone flipping a table.

But yeah your not the only who doesn't like it  Its a pretty shitty song, like who's idea was it to even record this song! Even Almond Crush's and Dobondobondo's songs were loads better......and that's a stretch by far. Even the freaking album cover too! Looks like a freaking 3 year-old doodle or something!!! Even I can draw better than that shit.

I totally agree. Dobondobondo was funny and Almond Crush's songs were just totally different genres which weren't to my taste. They are not bad per se. But Scandal in the House is a noisy mess. And highly repetitive. Just one sentence repeated ad infinitum.

The song is rapidly growing on me. 

 

They have been trying a lot of different things lately, I think since Pin Heel Surfer, but I usually don't enjoy it so much.

I also don't think this is something coming from their company, I believe the members themselves want to try new things.

But I wish they never forget about their rockish roots, after all that's the main reason I like them.

This is one aspect of all this experimentation I've been pondering about since Baby Action came out. We know that Haruna personally favors various K-Pop tunes, Namie Amuro and loves dance music in general. Rina is pretty much into pop music as far as I know. Don't know about Timo. The only one who is in any way into rock music seems to be Mami.

I agree with your suspicion that the girls themselves want to try new things. I can imagine Haruna was all over PHS and their little dancing shtick in the MV.

Sometimes I really wonder how those four girls came to the decision to form a rock band... And then my mind goes off into conspiracy theory territory about how the band may have actually come together.

 

To come back to the original topic: Sadly we will never know if it is the label or the girls who try to change the image and sound of the band further away from rock. Maybe they work in concert. *shrugs* 

All I know is that I see it with a wary eye.

Funny that you mention that. Back in 2011 I would have scoffed at OVERDRIVE the same way I scoffed at most of Baby Action (still slightly do today). Seems I evolved together with the band. But I have my limits.

I'm going to say it again, I really like this song! I know it's more pop than rock but it's so addicting!

The chorus kind of reminded me of the time I used to listen to Blink182. I don't know if anyone got the same feeling   

 

Blink 182? No, not particularly. But I get a country-thwang vibe from the bridge around 2 min in. lol

 

I really think that at some point they were not going to be a band but and idol group lol

But I also have the same feeling that Mami is the one more into rock. Sometimes I get this feeling from Tomomi too.

 

Now I'm wondering how much this single is going to sell... This could determine the direction for the band in the next releases.

 

 My crystal ball tells me the single will sell just fine. The A-side is pretty good and is the song that's getting promoted. But for selfish reasons I hope it doesn't sell more than Awanai. Don't need further incentives to break away from the Rock'n Roll. The next album is the real deal. My expectations are not too high, though.

I yearn for another Best Scandal or Temptation Box but it isn't going to happen...

 

I don't know if you know but they were training to be dancers over at Osaka's Caless School.

They decided to become a band when one of their instructors told them they had good chemistry and should be a band. (Or something along those lines)

 

Yeah, that's at least one version/part of the story. First it was just Haruna, Mami and Tomomi. They recruited Rina some time later. And the band name Scandal was derived from a "pink shop" in the same building their practice room was.

 

For those curious: Here's the earliest video of a performance by them I know of. Back in 2007. Befor they signed with a label, allegedly. Although I always wondered who helped them getting those huge ass speakers into the park and all this other crap like the little black tent and stuff. And you will notice that they play Space Ranger. The music to that song was composed by a guy named "Rio" by the credits. Really would like to know who the guy is and how they came to work with him.

Just listened to the new album.

 

After Brand New Wave I thought: "Shit, this album is going to suck. :/ ". A bland electro-pop song as start didn't pump me up much for the rest of the album.

Then came OVERDRIVE which I already got accustomed to but it's nonetheless pretty much pop music.

When Uchiagehanabi started playing I was ready to write this album off as a fail. The song is okay but nothing special, really.

 

BUT THEN!

 

Orange Juice has flashes of genius at certain points throughout. The chorus is kinda lame but everything around it is just diverse and exciting. I gained a faint thread of hope in that moment.

And then Metronome crashed through the speakers and I was like: "Dang, this is like Shukan Sentimental but ON STEROIDS!" It's like heaven.

Weather report is a great rock ballad with some beautiful vocals by Haruna. And Rina get's (again) the award for best lyrics. The song is just beautiful in it's melancholy.

The same goes for Hachigatsu. The chorus with all members singing is great.

Awanai was my baby from the start and I still love that song to death.

Kagen no Tsuki is a good song, too. A bit clamer but much more groovy. Especially Tomomi's bass gives the song some nice gravity.

Koi no Gestalt Houkai is pretty much garbage rock. The slowdown for the bridge is quite something.

Kimi to Mirai to Kanzen Douki is a odd one. It kinda switches between dance song and rock song back and forth. The full song is much better than the shorter 2 minutes something of the promo. I'm suprised how much I like it.

Next was Namida yo Hikare and it totally tripped me up. The song is a wild ride with a speed that leaves a coherent melody in the dust. I thought more crazy it can't get. Hahaha. Ha.

I didn't think Standard would be that kind of a frenzy. The song is a delirious mess but also a glorious and creative mess. It is Scandal through and through. Rinas drumplay is freaking amazing!

 

 

At the end I found this album to be better than Queens are Trumphs. And it tries everything to dethrone Temptation Box but comes short because of the first 3 songs which I don't like that much.

What impresses me is that the girls become better and better with their instruments and push the limits further and further with them. And most of the songs are much more unconventional and creative. Everything feels more mature and refined.

 

I'm happy with how this one turned out.
