Is it wrong to be against Religion?

A lot of people have argued that being against certain practices in society (abortion, same sex marriage, anti-conception) out of religious convictions is perfectly ok, but stating that you do not agree with religion and religious people you are being called out for stereotyping and generalizing, while all of those religious convictions are instituted in the religion itself.

Do you think it is wrong to think that religion is a bad thing?

And do you think that religious people do not mean the same thing as the religion?

i think its more that if you want to be able to express your own opinions then you have to allow others to express their own. (assuming that those opinions do not infringe on the rights of others, which is why things like homophobia get called out)

but honestly you can think what you like

again, why would you be against something that has no consequence on you whatsoever?

You can not be religious, not for but being against means you want to take away the right of choosing what you want to believe from people. lik you chose not to believe in religions.

You can be against what some religious people do though, or offensive things found in some religion.

I don't think it's wrong to be against doctrines of religious beliefs, or to be against practicing religion yourself. What annoys me as a religious person myself, is when someone feels entitled to judge me solely based upon the fact that I am religious or do follow a religion. I wear a hijab, but I study evolution in university, and literally every single time I go to an evolution class, the professor will start staring at me and say that even if you don't agree with the idea of evolution, that this class assumes that you do. As though because I wear a hijab I automatically am like some hardcore Westborough church goer.

Do you know what I mean? When I go up to someone I know is homosexual or atheist I'm not going to be like, oh that must mean that they hate me because I'm religious. I don't mind if they don't agree with my religion, that's their opinion, but when they start stereotyping me, or even worse, try to "enlighten" me. That's where I get mad.

Followers do not necessarily indicate religion, no. Religion are theological beliefs, they are theory. How people practically apply them or interpret them is different in my eyes.

If you're not being a dick about it.

Basically

"Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one and it's fine to be proud of it, but please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around... and PLEASE don't try to shove it down my throat."[/size]

LMFAO

That depends on what you're against about.

While I'm not a strict follower of religion myself, I do believe it does have its positives that can be apply in life. If its something that can help you be a better person or to aid others in a positive matter, those things I have no issue with.

Its only when people use religion for purposes that are abusive and harmful. I'm sure any reasonable person should understand that.

Clearly if you wear the hijab you're not a Westborough church goer :P

Religion is not directly related to the prohibition of stuff like abortion and gay rights; you can be pro-equality and still be religious, it depends on the religion/congregation.

With that said... I think you can think religious practices are stupid, or uninspired, or whatever. You can be very opposed to religious practices that hurt people, and you can oppose the people that carry them out, and you'll be in the right then. But I believe that people do have a right to the practices and beliefs that don't hurt people or get in the way of progress, and you should try to respect them and be a nice, decent person to those that simply have views you think are silly.
