Did you perhaps ever check out any spoiler at any site like in soompi?  :megusta:

He was the last king of Goryeo so I assumed he would die.

No, I don't really go to soompi forum or any other kpop forum. I just checked the wiki and it said he was deposed of and exiled. Then died about 2 years later.

Yeah because I grew up with wuxia series and my first kdrama was a sageuk, I think. It's either Jewel in the Palace or romcom, Full House. So I have a weak spot for historical stuff. Still, it depends on the plot and writing because there had been too many historical drama (both chinese and korean) that I had dropped. But the good ones are really good though :D

No, I am pretty sure it's her biological mother because people have been telling Boon Yi that she looks like her mother.

'Six Flying Dragons' Moomyeong is after Yi Seonggye's life  (source)

photo678756.jpg

On the 34th episode of SBS' 'Six Flying Dragons', Moogeuk (Jeon Mi-seon) ordered to kill Yi Seonggye (Cheon Ho-jin). Yi Seonggye became furious with Jeong Mong-joo (Kim Ee-seong) in regards to Jeong Do-jeon (Kim Myeong-min)'s banishment and drew his sword at him.

Yeon-hyang (Jeon Mi-seon), the head of Moomyeong found out Jeong Mong-joo could not persuade Yi Seonggye and ordered to kill Yi Seonggye under the excuse to secure the stability of the nation.

As it seemed it was not like Yeon-hyang to rush that way, Gil Seon-mi (Park Hyeok-kwon) pointed it out, Yeon-hyang responded saying, "I'd like to stabilize the matters outside first and then reorganize the internal matters as soon as possible". She then ordered Gil Seon-mi to get rid of Yi Seonggye with his own hands and Gil Seon-mi went out to kill Yi Seonggye.

The historical background to help understand Ep. 33~34

tumblr_inline_o1lpcs6kNh1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ The Expulsion of Buddhism 척불론 斥佛論

Every religion has its own dark ages. Like Christianity in Medieval Europe, Korean Buddhism had its dark ages in the 14th century. Martin Luther started the Reformation of Roman Catholic Church with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. Likewise, Jung Do-Jeon did the same thing against Goryeo’s Buddhism, and he was 130 years ahead of his European counterpart as a religious reformer.

Why did Jung Do-Jeon criticize Buddhism? As you can see in Sambong’s arguments in SFD ep. 33, in any society in any period of human history, if a religion doesn’t have any will to solve the serious social problem, or if a religion is too much deconsecrated that it exists only for “vested interests†and disregards the majority of common people, it can’t avoid criticism.

For instance, according to the Buddhist belief in reincarnation, you were born as a slave in this extremely casted Goryeo society, because you had done something bad in your previous life. You should think that your current social class was all part of your karma, so you should obediently accept the status quo as the retribution for the deeds of your former life. Buddhist fatalism was used to justify social absurdity, which break people’s will for social reforms in this world.

tumblr_inline_o1lpht9G0F1s5yhgo_540.jpg

* Bulssi Japbyeon (불씨잡변 ä½›æ°é›œè¾¨ roughly translated as ‘Buddha’s Nonsense’ ) was written by Jung Do-Jeon in 1398, a few months before he was killed by Yi Bang-Won. →  Wikipedia

Confucian scholars rejected afterlife, and valued human conduct in this world over belief in God for the next life. They believe they should act first before they pray for God. Therefore, Buddhism reform had long been every Confucian scholars’ desire, and Jung Do-Jeon’s thoughts had a profound effects on Joseon’s policy to oppress Buddhism.

The foundation of Joseon is called “a revolution†not just because of the dynastic change but because of the paradigm shift from Buddhism to Confucianism, from religion to rationalism.

Check out my previous post about “Yi Bang-Won (King Taejong) and Buddhismâ€. It was Jung Do-Jeon who created the basic rationale for Buddhism reforms, but it was Yi Bang-Won (King Taejong) who carried out the reforms.

tumblr_inline_o1lpm2gI361s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Jung Do-Jeon’s Family Tree

According to the Annals of Joseon Dynasty (ì¡°ì„ ì™•ì¡°ì‹¤ë¡ æœé®®çŽ‹æœå¯¦éŒ„), Jung Do-Jeon’s maternal grandmother was a slave’s daughter.

Buddhist monk Kim Jeon (김전 金戩) committed adultery with his slave’s wife and got a daughter from her. After giving up becoming a Buddhist monk, he had shacked up with her. In the turbulent Goryeo society, it was common for a Buddhist monk to violate the Buddhist commandments and return to secular society. It was also common for a noble man to commit adultery with his female slave. However, it was extremely uncommon for a nobleman to treat a slave woman like his wife and to make over all his property to her daughter. He loved the daughter so much that he arranged her marriage with a noble man by the name of Woo Yeon (우연, 禹延). That’s why their story was written in the book of Danyang Woo clan. Woo Yeon’s daughter, Lady Woo, was Jung Do-Jeon’s mother.

It can’t be judged rashly whether this story is true or not, because it was based on the testimony of those who had a deep grudge against Jung Do-Jeon. Its credibility is questionable, but one thing is for sure. It is historically true that Poeun Jung Mong-Joo used this rumor in order to impeach Sambong Jung Do-Jeon.

tumblr_inline_o1lpt310Qc1s5yhgo_540.jpg

â–  The impeachment of Jung Do-Jeon (September, 1391)

In 1391, Jung Do-Jeon was discussing with his colleagues about impeaching Woo Hyeon-Bo (우현보 禹玄寶, 1333~1400) who was a privileged noble as well as King Gongyang’s in-law. However, his secret impeachment plan was leaked in advance and backfired. Woo family believed that Sambong’s reforms were nothing but his personal enmities because they used to look down on him as their family slave’s descendent and harassed him. You can see such a scene in SFD where Woo Hak-Joo harassed Jung Do-Jeon in a hut.  (Ep. 2)

tumblr_inline_o1lpvagtpk1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Woo Hak-Joo : “Your maternal grandmother was supposedly a daughter of a fake monk and a slave. Those rumors must be true.†(Ep. 2)

Poeun Jung Mong-Joo’s faction didn’t miss the opportunity and launched a counterattack to impeach Sambong. They claimed that Jung Do-Jeon purposely set up Woo Hyeon-Bo. “A man of doubtful parentage stole the government post and has been messing up the court. He attempted to get rid of his former owner to conceal his own slave blood.†That’s exactly what they said when they impeached Sambong Jung Do-Jeon.

You may think what a lowdown trick Poeun Jung Mong-Joo used. But this is politics. Kill, or be killed. It might be Poeun’s final desperate attempt to stop Sambong because he couldn’t find any other fault with his best friend except for the lineage. As Boon-Yi’s mother said, “If you are not determined enough to even turn your back on your loved ones, you’d better stop here. Don’t pretend you’re living for the world. If you’re not that much determined, you’d better live for yourself. Don’t look at the world.â€

Anyways, Sambong was exiled, and his sons were degraded to commoners. After Joseon was founded, however, Woo family have lost their power and was almost exterminated by Jung Do-Jeon. They revived after the first strife of Princes (1398) by helping Yi Bang-Won to kill Sambong.

tumblr_inline_o1lq0mbhtK1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Goryeo‘s Slave System

  • Marriage between people from different social classes was a taboo. However, there existed many children born to slaves with other classes.
  • If one of the parents is a slave, the child became a slave too, regardless of the other parent’s social class. (ì¼ì²œì¸¡ì²œ 一賤則賤)
  • The ownership of a child slave belonged to the mother’s owner. (천ìžìˆ˜ëª¨ë²• 賤åéš¨æ¯æ³•)
  • Therefore, according to the law, Jung Do-Jeon should be a slave on principle if the rumor is true.

After becoming a king, Yi Bang-Won changed the law with a strong will. In case a child has commoner/noble father and slave mother, the child’s social class should follow the father’s. Therefore, many people were liberated from slavery. If Jung Do-Jeon had stayed alive, he wouldn’t have suffered from his lineage issue thanks to King Taejong’s slave law (노비종부법, 奴婢從父法).

It was originally intended to increase tax revenues by increasing the number of commoners, but it drew strong opposition from slave owners. Unfortunately, this law was reversed by the later kings decades later.

tumblr_inline_o1lq7yuEba1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Yi Seong-Gye’s injury (March~April, 1392)

In March of 1392, Yi Seong-Gye was seriously injured in the accident to fall off a horse he was riding. He was enjoying hunting on his way to greet Crown Prince who was supposed to return from Ming China.

King Gongyang pretended to worry about his condition and sent a doctor and medicine, but the king and Jung Mong-Joo didn’t hide their pleasure at this news. Jung Mong-Joo persuaded the king to use this chance to get rid of Yi Seong-Gye’s followers. While Yi Seong-Gye was on sick leave, his 5~6 followers like Jo Joon and Nam Eun were impeached and exiled. Jung Mong-Joo insisted that they should be killed, but the indecisive king hesitated to go further. History says they even attempted to kill Yi Seong-Gye, but there is no mention about how.

Around the same time, Yi Bang-Won had been in 3-year mourning next to his mother’s tomb in accordance with Confucian courtesy. However, after receiving an urgent message from his step mother (Lady Gang), he hurriedly went to see his injured father staying in Byeokrando (ë²½ëž€ë„ ç¢§ç€¾æ¸¡) international trade port.

Yi Seong-Gye was suffering from a high fever and pain. He learned from Bang-Won that all of his followers were exiled during his absence. Bang-Won warned that Jung Mong-Joo would ruin Yi Family after all and that they should do something to stop him. But Yi Seong-Gye didn’t give him a clear answer. Bang-Won desperately persuaded his father to leave there to escape assassination. Yi Seong-Gye didn’t listen to Bang-Won at first, but finally allowed himself to be moved on the wagon to the capital secretly in the middle of the night.

tumblr_inline_o1lqh3uTSV1s5yhgo_540.jpg

After returning home, Bang-Won asked his father how to deal with this emergency. All of his followers were already exiled and their revolution plan was on the verge of bursting like a bubble. However, Yi Seong-Gye just answered “Leave our life and death up to our fate. We have no choice but to accept our fate.†While the Buddhist general resigned himself to the fate, his confucian scholar son didn’t give up and  faced reality. Bang-Won discussed with his relatives about how to handle this emergency. He told them “Our family’s loyalty to the king is a well-known fact all over the country. However, we gained notoriety by Jung Mong-Joo’s evil conspiracy against us. How could we explain ourselves for the future generations?†They conspired to kill Jung Mong-Joo.

tumblr_inline_o1lqgaO8vD1s5yhgo_540.jpg

That was the beginning of Yi Bang-Won. SFD Ep 35~36 will show us the man we know in the history.
