The historical background to help understand Ep. 45~46

tumblr_inline_o3udksY8Cp1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Jung Do-Jeon : When I was 15, King Gongmin punished the powerful quislings that benefited from Yuan Empire, and I saw him driving out Yuan. During my entire childhood, I watched their despotism. How do you think I felt when they were driven out? I felt like my heart was going to burst. After witnessing that, I pestered my father to send me to Sungkyunkwan. And there I met King Gongmin, and I dreamt of that for the first time. The dream of managing Liaodong.
Yi Bang-Ji : So, he gave you the dream.
Jung Do-Jeon : He did. Dream…. Dream may seem like hope in life. But in fact, it is rather like a comfort. For me, that’s who he was.
Yeon-Hee : You were that person for me, at that time.
Jung Do-Jeon : Was I? I am thankful that I comforted you.

■ King Gongmin, and Sambong’s Constitutional Monarchy

This conversation reminds me of Episode 2 where little Bang-Won watched Jung Do-Jeon singing the “Muiiya†song composed by King Gongmin. Little Bang-Won talked to himself “That man is Zantgar (the strongest man)!†and entered Sungkyunkwan to become a scholar like him. From that moment, Jung Do-Jeon became an idol for Bang-Won, as King Gongmin had become an idol for 15-year-old Jung Do-Jeon.

As Bang-Won is heartbroken by his idol right now, Jung Do-Jeon must have fallen into despair when his idol turned into a lunatic after losing his beloved wife. The clever and capable king who used to be Jung Do-Jeon’s dream and comfort had become his worst nightmare. I already explained about the king’s transformation in “Kings of Goryeo in pre-SFD†and “Traitor Kim Yong, Joseon-era interpretationâ€

I think that’s why Jung Do-Jeon came up with the Constitutional Monarchy. After witnessing the fall of the greatest monarch, he couldn’t trust a system swayed by one ruler’s capability any longer. Therefore, he decided to make a system that doesn’t get affected by whether the king is clever or not.

It explains why Sambong ruled out Bang-Won in SFD. Bang-Won is not good enough to lead the country? Sambong just doesn’t want a king to be clever? No way. Actually, if it had not been for the murder of Poeun on Seonji bridge, Sambong in SFD might have gladly accepted Bang-Won’s kingship. The bloody murder made Bang-Won the least favorite candidate for the ruler of his ideal Confucian nation where all politics must be based on benevolence.

tumblr_inline_o3udmel9CH1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Bang-Won’s unrequited love for his master will end tragically next week. Like Yeon-Hee told her master Cho-Young in ep. 41…

“The end of life is death anyway. Even if your dream is never going to come true, you get to have a dream while you are living. How nice is that?â€

This could be Sambong’s dying words, too. When Sambong is saying “I’m exhausted, Bang-Won-ah†in ep 47 preview, his expression looks relieved and comfortable. He must have no regrets for his life.

■ Jo Young-Gyu’s death

Last week, I predicted that the writers would ignore the history and make Jo Young-Gyu either live longer as Jo Young-Moo or killed by someone else sooner or later. I think I put a jinx on him. (sobbing)

As I said before, Jo Young-Gyu died of an illness on January 9, 1395. The First Strife of Princes happened on August 26, 1398. So it is not historically true that Young-Gyu’s death directly led up to the princes’ revolt. It is also a fiction that Bang-Won made use of Jo Young-Gyu’s funeral as an opportunity to assemble the disaffected.

â–  The First Strife of Princes (August 26, 1398) - Part. 1

It is also known as Mooin Jeongsa (무ì¸ì •사 戊寅定社, meaning “The rebellion which took place in the year of Mooin (1398) to rectify the wrong political situationâ€).

By all appearances, it looks like the princes’ righteous protest against Prime Minister Jung Do-Jeon’s evil deeds. But the truth is… it was the princes’ coup to drag their father down by killing the king’s right-hand man, Jung Do-Jeon.

There are various issues involved with this coup such as the Crown Prince installment, the exemption of royal family from the list of Founding contributors, the abolishment of private armies, Liaodong expedition, and the matter of Constitutional monarchy vs. Absolute monarchy. Here is the summary of their arguments.

  • Primogeniture : The legitimate eldest son should become the Crown Prince instead of Bang-Seok.
  • Pro-Ming China : The Liaodong expedition should not be allowed even if Joseon is being humiliated by Ming China.
  • Anti-military reforms : Don’t take the private armies from us!
  • Absolute monarchy : The prime minister overpowering the king is unacceptable.
  • The princes and the royal family should get credit for their contribution to the establishment of Joseon.

In short, the royal family’s accumulated anger for the king and Lord Sambong finally exploded because of the new Liaodong expedition and military reforms. They killed Jung Do-Jeon, Nam Eun, Shim Hyo-Saeng, Crown Prince Bang-Seok, and his brother Bang-Beon. King Taejo (Yi Seong-Gye) was also dragged from the throne in the form of abdication.

The detailed process of this coup will be explained next week.

â–  The Participants in the First Strife of Princes - Princes

The leader was Prince Jeongan / Bang-Won (정안대군 ì´ë°©ì› é–å®‰å¤§å› æŽèгé ).

His elder brothers Prince Hwaean / Bang-Gan (회안대군 ì´ë°©ê°„ æ‡·å®‰å¤§å› æŽèг幹) and Prince Deokan / Bang-Ui (ìµì•ˆëŒ€êµ° ì´ë°©ì˜ ç›Šå®‰å¤§å› æŽèŠ³æ¯…) joined later. SFD showed us only two out of the three princes.

Prince Youngan / Bang-Gwa (ì˜ì•ˆëŒ€êµ° ì´ë°©ê³¼ æ°¸å®‰å¤§å› æŽèŠ³æžœ) didn’t participate in this coup. The filial son was praying for his father‘s speedy recovery in Sogyeokseo (소격서 昭格署 : a shaman’s place in the palace) not even knowing what was going on. When he heard that a revolt broke out in the palace, he attempted an emergency escape and had been hiding in his retainer’s residence until the coup was finished.

In the chaos of the coup, Bang-Won asked his half brother Prince Muan / Bang-Beon (무안대군 ì´ë°©ë²ˆ æ’«å®‰å¤§å› æŽèŠ³è•ƒ) to join them in a hurry. Bang-Won already knew that Bang-Beon was not happy about the king’s decision to hand the Crown Prince title over to Bang-Seok. Bang-Beon declined Bang-Won’s offer, but he didn’t inform his father or Bang-Seok of this coup, either. He chose to remain as a bystander, but such a selfish decision cost his own life in the end.

â–  The Participants in the First Strife of Princes - Lieges

In August 2 of 1398, about 20 days before the First Strife of Princes, Ha Ryun (하 륜 河崙, 1348~1416) was appointed as the governor of Chungcheong province. It was Jung Do-Jeon’s scheme to take him away from Bang-Won. In the farewell party before leaving for his new post, Ha Ryun intentionally spilt his drink on Bang-Won’s clothes. Bang-Won got upset and stormed off the party place. Ha Ryun followed the prince to say sorry and had a secret meeting while pretending to remove the stain. It is said that he introduced Yi Sook-Beon as a helper, and advised the prince to make a surprise attack on Jung Do-Jeon.

Yi Sook-Beon (ì´ìˆ™ë²ˆ æŽå”蕃, 1373~1440) was one of the biggest contributors to this coup. In order to help Bang-Won, he mobilized his regional troops which was building the royal tomb of Queen Shindeok in Hanyang city. Actually, it was against the law to build a royal tomb within the capital, but King Taejo wanted to stay closer to his beloved wife, so he ordered to build the tomb inside Hanyang. Local officers in Gyeonggi Province took turns in the construction of the tomb, and Yi Sook-Beon, the Ansan governor, was one of them.

Yi Bang-Won’s brothers-in-law and Lady Min’s brothers, Min Moo-Gu (민무구 閔無咎, ?~1410) and Min Moo-Jil (민무질 閔無疾, ?~1410), also played an important role in this coup.

Yi Geo-Yi (ì´ê±°ì´ æŽå±…易, 1348~1412) was a man who married his two sons off to Yi Seong-Gye’s eldest daughter and Yi Bang-Won’s eldest daughter respectively. He was on a fast track to the top after the coup’s success, but he got impeached and exiled after complaining about Yi Bang-Won’s abolishment of private armies.

On the contrary, Yi Cheon-Woo (ì´ì²œìš° æŽå¤©ç¥, 1354∼1417) supported Yi Bang-Won’s military reforms. As a result, he could build a successful military career and enjoyed the honors as a royal family member until he died. He was the second son of Yi Won-Gye who was Yi Seong-Gye’s half brother.

Yi Bang-Gan and Park Po (ë°•í¬ æœ´è‹ž, ?~1400) sided with Bang-Won in this coup, but they would turn into his enemies in the Second Strife of Princes (1400).

Historically, it is not true that Jo Mal-Saeong (ì¡°ë§ìƒ 趙末生, 1370~1447) participated in the First Strife of Princes (1398). He passed the civil service exam and became a government officer in 1401. His participation is a fictional set-up originated from Tree with Deep Roots in which Jo Mal-Saeng played a pivotal role in deciding the destiny of Yeon-Hee and Bang-Ji.

tumblr_inline_o3udx91Od41s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Woo Hak-Joo 우학주 (禹學朱)

In episodes 45~46, Woo Hak-Ju was haunting everywhere like a ghost. (LOL) He is a fictional character based on a real historical figure, Woo Hyeon-Bo (우현보 禹玄寶, 1333~1400). I already explained about the ill-fated relationship between Woo clan and Jung Do-Jeon in “The impeachment of Jung Do-Jeon (September, 1391)†of SFD Episode 33~34 post. Check it out.

It is said that Woo Hyeon-Bo collected Poeun Jung Mong-Joo’s corpse and held a funeral. He was ousted and exiled after Joseon was established. When he heard from his pupil Yi Rae (ì´ëž˜ æŽä¾†) that Yi Bang-Gan was plotting a mutiny against Bang-Won, Woo Hyeon-Bo immediately informed Bang-Won of it. As a result, he was reinstated as a contributor to the Second Strife of Princes (1400), but he died of an illness a few months later.

Characters like Park Po and Woo Hak-Joo imply that SFD will handle the Second strife of Princes (1400) in the upcoming 4 episodes. Therefore, it is safe to say that it will end with the coronation of King Taejong (Yi Bang-Won).

tumblr_inline_o3uenuLdZG1s5yhgo_540.jpg

â–  Minbon (민본 民本 “People is the roots of the nationâ€)

I’m sad that many people misunderstood Jung Do-Jeon in SFD as a hypocrite. The writers never described him like that, but their bias in favor of Yi Bang-Won made them blindly insult him.

Politics is not the matter of good and evil, but the matter of justification. It is the battle of one ideal vs. the other ideal. Which side is better is dependent on the future generation’s evaluation. The evaluation is also changing as time goes by. Therefore, it is childish to think Bang-Won is good and Poeun & Sambong are evil, and vice versa.

Sambong’s legacy and his Minbon (민본 民本 “The people are the roots of the nation“) ideology will pass down to King Sejong the Great, Yi Bang-Won’s successor in TWDR.

tumblr_inline_o3uelhEJ9v1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Jung Do-Jeon : After all, I failed to solve one problem.
Boon-Yi : Pardon?
Jung Do-Jeon : While designing this country, I thought a lot, but… Communication with the people. I haven’t solved the problem.
Boon-Yi : Well… Are the people really the roots of the nation?
Jung Do-Jeon : ……!
Boon-Yi : I’m sorry. I happened to be at Jungryunam cliff.
Jung Do-Jeon : In the heart of Sadaebu politicians, the people should be the roots. That’s what I meant. But until the people become the roots and center of the world, it will take a long time.
Boon-Yi : Why is that?
Jung Do-Jeon : The people are in charge of production. They don’t have spare time. They are too busy to enlighten themselves. Some of them do learn to read and write, but for most of them, it is simply impossible.
Boon-Yi : If you keep thinking about it, someday you’ll solve that problem as well
.

Tree with Deep Roots Episode 11

King Sejong : I heard this place is where Jung Do-Jeon did a seminar. Under here, the students crowded and listened to his lectures.
Garion : Your Majesty, I don’t know any of these things, and the students just brought wine and meat here….
King Sejong : The reason why I brought you here is because I believe at least Sambong would understand the command I gave you. I’ve read his book over and over again. This is the conclusion that I got from it. Everyone will say that it is against Neo-Confucianism (성리학 性ç†å¸), but only Sambong would have agreed with me.

Tree with Deep Roots Episode 15

Kang Chae-Yoon : Ha! If the new letters are released, do you think that the people will get to know the letters? Since the nobleman‘s job is studying, they can memorized 50,000 Chinese characters. Yes! I know at least 1000 characters. But do you know how hard it was to learn them? Since I’m not smart? No. Because there is no time to learn! That is the life of commoners! If they want to feed themselves, they have to get up before the dawn and work until night without straightening their back all day long. When can they learn the letters?
Prince Gwangpyeong : You haven’t tried the new letters yet. You can do it!
Kang Chae-Yoon : It took me so long to learn 1000 characters among 50,000 characters. Then, learn them? How many characters are there in His Majesty’s writing? Five thousands? Or Three Thousands characters?
Prince Gwangpyeong :  Just 28 characters!

tumblr_inline_o3ueucYyxM1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Tree with Deep Roots Episode 18

King Sejong : Look at the previous dynasty, Goryeo. The political system rotted like stagnant water is bound to corrupt. The Goryeo nobles were annihilated by Sadaebu.
Choi Man-Ri : The current Joseon is different from Goryeo! Not to repeat the negativities of Goryeo, instead of Nepotism, we pick the officials through the civil exams.
King Sejong : But how are you tested on the exams? You take the tests in Chinese characters that only you Sadaebu can learn and know! Even though a commoner can take the test and become a government official too, in truth, only those who know Chinese characters can become a government official! At this rate, in a hundred years, children of concubines will be prohibited from taking the tests. And in two hundred years, only noble class can take the tests, and in three hundred years, you can buy and sell the noble births!
Choi Man-Ri : Your Majesty!
King Sejong : Joseon will fall into tetany and that harmful effect will become more severe by the day. Look at history! Isn’t every nation’s history like that? Hence, as a strategy to overcome the harmful effect, as a small hope, I created the letters.

â–  Other Tree with Deep Roots (TWDR) references

Episode 45~46 have many scenes foreshadowing Tree with Deep Roots (TWDR). The following is what I found.

◉ Yeon-Hee = Sambong’s woman?

Jo Mal-Saeng : Is that her? Master Sambong’s lady.
Yi Shin-Jeok : You could say that.

This scene explains why Yeon-Hee was mistaken as “Sambong’s woman†in TWDR. Yi Shin-Jeok, the double spy sent by Sambong, pretended to dislike Yeon-Hee because Sambong favored her. Jo Mal-Saeng believed everything just as told by him and later informed Kang Chae-Yoon of this story in TWDR. Yeon-Hee has never been mentioned as Sambong’s wife or concubine. She was just called “Sambong’s woman (lady)†in TWDR.

tumblr_inline_o3uf0jT03x1s5yhgo_540.jpg

â—‰ How did Jung Gi-Joon get to know Yi Bang-Ji?

Finally, Jung Gi-Joon appeared as Jung Do-Jeon’s little nephew in episode 46. He will become the third Bonwon (leader) of Milbon (Hidden Roots), and the arch-nemesis of King Sejong in TWDR.

Sambong, his brother, his nephew, Bang-Ji and Yoen-Hee were eating out together in the tavern of Moo-Hyul’s grandma. It was a heartwarming sight to see. Bang-Ji was watching the little kid with a smile in his face. Maybe, it would be their last happy moment in their entire life.

When old Bang-Ji met Jung Gi-Joon again in TWDR (ep. 17), he said.

Yi Bang-Ji : I raised you on my back, Don’t know?
Jung Gi-Joon : Right, right. I did go to you a lot calling you “Uncleâ€.

So, this scene explains how they got to know each other. Behind the scene of SFD, Bang-Ji must raise the kid on his back with a smile.

tumblr_inline_o3uf2mVSTR1s5yhgo_540.jpg

â—‰ Why did Milbon (Hidden roots) turn nasty?

Jung Do-Gwang : Brother, with the help of all members of Milbon (Hidden root), I’ll make sure the public opinion leans in favor of this war.
Sambong : What?
Jung Do-Gwang : Is there anything wrong?
Sambong : What are you talking about? That is not what Milbon is for.
Jung Do-Gwang : What do you mean?
Sambong : The most important role of the Milbon is to prevent the corruption of Sadaebu themselves. With their power, Sadaebu are prone to corruption. No matter how great the bureaucratic system is, once Sadaebu are corrupted, it’s over. That’s why Milbon is needed to watch their own desire and keep each other in check. Of course, when a king or a party forgets that the people are the roots and tries to destroy the system of Joseon we established, we should arise and fight back. Even when all the systems are being destroyed, we have to be hidden in order to survive. That’s why I made the organization secret. I can’t believe you were trying to manipulate behind the scenes even when we have systems in place.
Jung Do-Gwang : However… Yes, I understood. I will keep that in mind.

So, this is what Milbon was intended for in the beginning. However, its original purpose had been tarnished as time went by, and Milbon arose and fought back against King Sejong by killing scholars and manipulating behind the scenes when they thought the King is secretly doing something against Neo-Confucian ideology.

Just watched episode 47 and so much feels  :rlytearpls:

It is taking me a long time to write up my opinion of this episode and the development of characters.

First off, I will never understand the big love SB had for Po Eun that he was willing to die for it?

Another thing, BW madness is very much in the open in the last few episodes which made me do a 360 on BW as a whole. For some reason I believe BY was the only person who was capable of preserving the goodness that BW had, but he pushed her away and now she is just there like a shadow watching BW, but BW ignoring her [ IDK WHAT PEOPLE SAY MY BW AND BY SHIP WILL NEVER DIE!]

LSG dependence on SB is a little unhealthy, and reminded me of po eun and the previous king. But then again, SB did say that he wants the royal family have no say in the politics..

But anywho, regarding the end of SB. I thought I would be less emotional for the end of SB, especially because he rubbed me the wrong way for quite a few episodes. The last few episodes SB made me like him again. Despite making quite a few mistakes he had good ideas and just wanted the best country for the people. It is the exactly same with BW, the only difference is that BW wants to be involved in the politics of the country. Basically as SB said, the country he wants to develop is the same as the country BW wants to develop, the thing that pushed BW away from SB is no royal family in politics, that was the crucial mistake by SB. I was happy that BW killed SB and not a guard or smth like that, he took responsibility.

YH made me really sad but I do feel her killing her self could have been avoided. She had too much love and faith in the country SB was creating that she thought killing her self was worth it.Oh girl no it was not, but i'd say she would have probably been killed by BW either way if she was alive  :rlytearpls:

I want to applaud the cast for showing how much the characters have aged through out the drama. Looking back at BW and SB back in ep 1-10 you could see how different they not only looked ,but how much they as people have changed. Good casting is good casting.

EP 47, I still don't like BW wife, I don't care how supportive she is, imo she is pushing the darker side of BW even more and I just, MY BW x BY ship will never die  :hurr:

Idk if any of this made sense because i'm not really stable to write my thought out , still not over that ep lol. I guess I will do a full review once I finish the drama.

Also ep 48 will be another heart breaking one, because I know that the little prince will die

Don't Come With Break-Up (SFD OST) | Translation [trans from infinity13@lt] :

Clearly the clock has done two circles

It's a day where nothing is different

Like a photo that was snapped by the time

I am motionless

A more comfortable feeling

Am I deceiving myself?

At some point my tears flow

They still must be waiting for you

Don't go,don't come with break-up

Tell me to wait for a little bit

Only you, so that my heart won't go off

Please look back, please look back

While looking only at you

I couldn't look at the break up

I had got used to your back

I didn't know you were going far away

Don't go,don't come with break-up

Tell me to wait for a little bit

Only you, so that my heart won't go off

Please look back, please look back

Like then, that you wanted me like crazy

I know my heart can't forget you

Even if another love comes

It's just another way of remembering you

Because nobody can't take your place

Don't go, don't come with break-up

Tell me to wait for a little bit

Only you, so that my heart won't go off

Please look back, please look back

Netizens Reaction on Six Flying Dragons Episode 47 ‪

Osen: Six Flying Dragons', Kim Myung Min dies, a janteukareu until the end

Naver:

1. [+3,355, -66] "I'm very tired Bang Won-ah"... Jung Do Jeon is now gone ㅜㅜㅜ

2. [+2,937, -82] Lee Bang Won's facial expression when Lee Seong Gye pointed his sword

3. [+2,834, -160] Kim Myung Min's acting made me cry. Thank you for your hardwork

4. [+2,088, -81] Today was daebakã… ã… ã… ã…  Bang Won-ahã… ã… ã…

5. [+2,101, -133] Kill Bang Won's bloody rebellion has finally begun... Yeonhee and Bangji's farewell kiss... She took her own life for him.. Bangji will once again wield his blade of vengeance.... And Jung Do Jeon's death...Lee Bangji and Lee Bangji... Moohyul's fate? The story is so epic!!

6. [+688, -41] Yoo Ah In went mad today but his acting here is totally different from 'Veteran' (his 2015 blockbuster movie), as if his madness was from a high-dimensional world

7. [+619, -25] Should've given last year's Daesang to either Yoo Ah In or Kim Myung Min, their acting is so amazing....Why did they give it to Yongpal, that's so random

Nate:

1. [+354, -7] What will happen to Cheok Sa Gwang?

2. [+341, -21] Woah Yoo Ah In's acting gives me goosebumps

3. [+298, -11] Ah ㅜㅜ What will my Mondays and Tuesdays nights be like now? I got over my Monday disease because of Six Flying Dragons.. Not one episode has been boring.. I wonder how tomorrow's episode is going to be? I'll keep tuning in until the very last episode

One of the questions: "Bang Won is really smart and charismatic but also cruel and mad. Do you ever feel any similarities between you and him?"

He answered: "I think I have got hold of a world that I am not familiar with through the character, and it's fantastic."

Now that the entire show is about to end, I have this feeling of dread curling in my gut. Just watched ep 48.

Past couple of episodes have been pretty emotional. From the scores of deaths (Nam Eun, Sambong, Young Gyu just to name some off the top of my head), and the breakdowns (Bang Won + King/Young Gyu/Uncle Ji Ran) I can really see BW turning into King Taejong of TWDR.

Though, is it just me, or did BY fade quite a lot? I admit I've never jumped to ship BW and BY, but she had some form of screen presence here and there, even if I didn't like her character. Also, I'm staunchly Team Moo Hyul, if only because I adore his character and loyalty in both SFD and TWDR.

Considering how BW couldn't bring himself to hate SB previously, I would have enjoyed seeing a scene that could become a tipping point. The way SB was, "Bang Won ah, I'm...tired." I can't quite see how the BW faced with something like that could still kill his precious teacher. Well, then again, he killed the (half)brother who he had laughed with a couple days back.

I hope the last two episodes are seriously epic. (Ahem, for that, I think, more people have to die. Sorry folks, but I don't see a happy ending coming... :rlytearpls:  :rlytearpls:  :rlytearpls:

Yeah, the show is male centered. That's why we don't see a lot of our female characters~ they are great though!

I think when SB said he's tired, he means let's just end this and kill him quickly so he can go to sleep. SB knew that he lost but he's fine with it because his ideals will still live on and he made preparation like that secret group. So he doesn't fear death and accepted it.

New preview for episode 49 was broadcast after ep. 47~48 rerun.

One more scene was added.

Moo-Hyul is hugging his grandma in her tavern.

Bang-Won enters the tarvern and watches the scene.

Moo-Hyul : Am I feeling fulfilled beside Your Highness?

Bang-Won : Leave. Go where you want to go.

The remaining part is the same.
