lol you ended up reading the history. Based on previous events in the drama, I think the writers will go as closely as possible to the history, since how they had built up the conflict between Lee Bong Won and Jung Do Jeon. Killing Poeun was the last straw and now they are gonna be against each other after establishing Joseon.

I am really glad that the writers brought justice to the history. I have watched similar time period before called The Great Seer and it was a disappointment even though I was hyped about it D:

It is not sad, right... I hate sad endings..

It hasn't ended so I wouldn't know but romance is not exactly the main focus of the drama.

“Starting with Bidam?†Nameless in SFD Universe

[Dispatch News] February 02, 2016

Do you remember Bidam, the tragic hero of Queen Seondeok (2009, MBC)?

tumblr_inline_o23du6wDnf1s5yhgo_540.jpg

How about traitor Yeomjong who separated Bidam and Deokman?

tumblr_inline_o23dv74Ob01s5yhgo_540.jpg

In 2009 MBC drama Queen Seondeok, Bidam’s sole purpose in life was Deokman. However, Yeomjong came between them, and mutual misunderstanding led to Bidam’s tragic death.

Yeomjong was a wealthy Silla merchant. But he didn’t remain as a mere merchant. He was a powerful international trader with Japan and Sui & Tang China as well as Goguryeo and Baekje.

You may wonder why Queen Seondeok is mentioned here all of a sudden. Because the story of Bidam and Yeomjong was mentioned in episode 32 of Six Flying Dragons (2015~2016, SBS)

tumblr_inline_o23dwi5f0Z1s5yhgo_540.jpg

  • Yi Bang-Won : When did your organization start?
  • Granny Jeong-Ya : Silla. We began with a man by the name of Yeomjong who lived under Queen Seondeok’s reign.
  • Yi Bang-Won : Yeomjong? The traitor who revolted with Bidam?

M O R E....

The story of Six Flying Dragons (2015~2016 SBS) is happening about 700 years after Queen Seondeok (2009, MBC). It is also the prequel to Tree with Deep Roots (2011, SBS).

The writing team (Kim Young-Hyeon & Park Sang-Yeon) has created a huge  interconnected universe of the 3 Sageuk dramas. It’s like Marvel Cinematic Universe.

All 3 dramas have their own secret organization. Queen Seondok has “Moomyung Jido†(Nameless warriors), Six Flying Dragons has “Moomyung†(Nameless), and Tree with Deep Roots has “Milbon†(Hidden Root). They are the invisible hand penetrating those 3 dramas.

We asked about this invisible hand, so-called Nameless Universe, and got an answer from the SFD production team.

First of all, the following is the history of Moomyung (Nameless).

tumblr_inline_o23e19D90x1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Before Queen Seondeok’s reign, there were books kept by Munno. Their title was Sam-Han-Ji-Se (삼한지세 三韓地勢 “The geography of three kingdomsâ€).

The books contain a lot of information about 3 kingdoms of the Korean peninsula (Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla). It was intended to help a Silla king to unify the three kingdoms. Were they written by Munno? You’d better regard it as the collaboration of Munno and Yeomjong.

“These books belong to both Munno and me! Where does that money come from while Munno had been wandering around the world for about 20 years? How could he roam around Goguryeo, Baekje, Japan, Sui China? By himself? No, my organization was mobilized to collect the data for him. So, do these books belong to Munno? No, they are mine!"  (Yeomjong)

tumblr_inline_o23e4ufbgt1s5yhgo_540.jpg

In Queen Seondeok (2009, MBC), Yeomjong was a leader of large merchant groups. He was a big player in the international trading with Goguryeo, Baekje, Japan, Sui & Tang China.

We remember him as the traitor of "Yeomjong’s rebellionâ€. He had political ambitions by weighing between Bidam and Kim Chun-Chu. He and Bidam revolted against Queen Seondeok but their rebellion ended in failure.

Yeomjong has died. Then, was his organization dismantled? The writing team (Kim Young-Hyeon & Park Sang-Yeon) expanded this organization’s existence like Freemasons or Knights Templar in the Western world.

The following is an imaginary story after the death of Yeomjong. The organization’s remnants went to see Kim Chun-Chu and bowed low to him. Kim Chun-Chu embraced them because he was about to unify the three kingdoms.

As the history goes, the 3 kingdoms were unified. The Moomyung Jido revived again as an invisible hand. They began to pull strings of the political world with money and information from behind.

However,

The unified Silla was divided again and the turbulent times, so-called “the Later Three Kingdom periodâ€, began. Nameless started the 2nd unification project. At that time, the person they chose as their ally was King Gung-Ye of Hu-Goguryeo.

However, their collaboration ended in failure. In short, “Om Mani Banme Hum†King Gung-Ye wanted himself to be a Maitreya (* Messiah in Buddhism). It has caused a crack in their relationship.

In addition, King Gung-Ye moved the capital from Songak (Gaegyung) to Cheolwon. Therefore, Nameless joined hands with Wang clan which was the powerful local caln in Songak (Gaegyung). That was the alliance with Wang Geon.

tumblr_inline_o23ebg26eI1s5yhgo_540.jpg

The following is what Master Yooksan said in Six Flying Dragons.

“This is the agreement to partnerships between King Taejo (Wang Geon) and us, which was written after King Taejo expelled Gung Ye and established Goryeo. Ever since, we’ve had a close connection with the royal family.â€

“If you become the king, we are going to help you, even after you’ve come to the throne, to settle down the government.  In addition to that, if you become the king, those who go against you will be against us as well. So we’re going to eliminate them all.â€

“If you run away from the throne, Yi Seong-Gye will be the king in the end. If that happens, from your children, your siblings, to the royal family (Wang clan) that you took care of for so long, everyone will be wiped out. â€

tumblr_inline_o23ecf9vmz1s5yhgo_540.jpg

As history says, Wang Geon achieved the reunification of 3 kingdoms. The Nameless became an invisible hand again. They got involved with the government and the royal family for their own interests.

However, King Gongmin was different. He was a reformist ruler with strong independent tendency. He was aware of the power behind the throne, the Nameless, and began a pursuit.

“When Princess Noguk passed away after a difficult delivery, King Gongmin claimed that it was not an accident. He said there was an organization called Nameless behind the tragedy. King Gongmin was not in his right mind at the time. Everyone just thought he was delusional. He was determined to catch Nameless and searched through palace maids. In the process, Yeon-Hyang committed suicide. If Yeon-Hyang really is your (Bang-Ji’s) mother, she didn’t commit suicide. She must have snuck out of the palace. †(Jung Do-Jeon)

tumblr_inline_o23edw6Bfl1s5yhgo_540.jpg

That is what Kim Young-Hyeon and Park Sang-Yeon had created so far.

tumblr_inline_o23eejZpUe1s5yhgo_540.jpg

People say that history itself is a spoiler in Sageuk drama. As you know, Yi Bang-Won’s Hayeoga (What if song) and Jung Mong-Joo’s Dansimga (Single-hearted devotion song) are unchangeable historical fact.

However, the next is creators’ role. Writers’ imagination should be added a little bit, because Sageuk is a “drama†after all.

tumblr_inline_o23eggKg3K1s5yhgo_540.jpg

The writing team interpreted the whirl of history as the battle between those who try to maintain and those who try to change. Maybe, the Nameless is the representative of those who try to maintain.

They try to maintain their lands, their money, their power. They want the world to shut up and be quiet. Stagnant water is bound to corrupt. In short, they are the stagnant water?

tumblr_inline_o23ehmWigs1s5yhgo_540.jpg

We asked without preamble about the identity of Nameless.

The SFD production team answered. “The invisible organization is intended to manage the world to work in stable manner in order to keep their principle.†However, the team added that they can’t reveal yet what their principle is. By any chance, the difference of principles between Nameless, Jung Do-Jeon, and Yi Bang-won may be the core part of SFD’s climax.

“We will throw questions like "Why should Joseon be established at the time?† "Why did it have such limitations?“. We want to find answers from the debates between Nameless, Jung Do-Jeon and Yi Bang-Won.†(SFD production team)

tumblr_inline_o23ejsUZvr1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Now, the real “Six dragons†will begin to fly.

The worm in Yi Bang-Won’s heart already started to wriggle. He got to know Jung Do-Jeon’s dream was different from his ideal. We are going to witness Jung Mong-Joo’s death on Seonjuk bridge today. (* This news article was written on February 2, 2016)

In the vortex of politics, what will our six dragons choose in the end? what kind of role the Nameless will play? From their debates, what answers can we get?

The writers (Kimg Young-Hyeon and Park Sang-Yeon) connected Queen Seondeok with Six Flying Dragons, and also with Tree with Deep Roots.

The two writers’ dramatic universe creates another interesting point : warriors’ ranking. The final vonus of this article is “fighting skills†as they say. We made Q & A based on SFD production team’s opinion. So, who is the best?

tumblr_inline_o23emirhrE1s5yhgo_540.jpg

☞ Who is the strongest warrior?

Gukseon Munno (êµì„  문노 國仙 文努), the legendary Hwarang, is the strongest in Queen Seondeok (2009, MBC). Cheok Sa-Gwang, the successor to Goksan swordsmanship, is the strongest in Six Flying Dragons (2015~2016, SBS). In Tree with Deep Roots (2011, SBS)? Karpei, the Gokturk warrior, is the strongest.

☞ Then, if those 3 warriors have a sword fight? Who will win?

They are neck and neck. If those 3 warriors fight, the result will be decided not by their fighting skills, but by their condition of the day.

☞ Is there any weakness they have respectively?

Munno clings to “Great causeâ€. Cheok Sa-Gwang sticks to “loveâ€. However, Karpei doesn’t have anything like that. Even though he shares his mind with a little girl Yeon-Du, he is free from complicated anxiety. For that reason, Karpei may get slightly ahead of the rest 2 warriors.

☞ Is there any one who is considered second only to those 3 warriors?

Maybe, Chil-Sook?  (* Mishil’s bodyguard Hwarang in Queen Seondeok)

'Six Flying Dragons' Cheoksagwang leaves with the king (source)

photo684229.jpg

On the 37th episode of SBS' Monday & Tuesday drama, 'Six Flying Dragons', Cheoksagwang (Han Ye-ri) left with King Gongyang quietly.

Jeong Do-jeon (Kim Myeong-min) dethroned King Gongyang and enthroned Yi Seonggye (Cheon Ho-jin). Cheoksagwang stayed next to King Gongyang when he was leaving the palace. Cheoksagwang made eye contact with Muhyul (Yoon Gyoon-sang) to say farewell silently.

Muhyul recalled what Cheoksawang had told him before. Cheoksagwang had told him once, "I do not take any revenge. My dream is to go back to the time his highness was enthroned. My only wish is to live with him quietly. I would not hurt anyone unless someone would attempt to hurt us".

THIS KING FATE IS SO SAD...

---------------------------------------------------

In today's episode something that i noticed made my heart leap in joy and at the same time cower in fear.
Somehow from today's episode i get the feeling that Boon Yi will side with Bang Won and Yeon Hee with Jung Do Jeon, supporting them collecting intelligence through their networks. Seeing this my shipper heart for Bang Won and Boon Yi rejoiced but at the same time Boon Yi not having a standing.... sequel wise or historically makes me scared that the writers might kill her or seperate her from Bang Won.Truly Bang Won without Boon Yi will not be Bang Won anymore... he will become Taejong , infinitely cold and ruthless... and the thought of that pains my heart.

We now have two clear teams, with Bang Won and Jung Do jeon heading each,
Jung Do Jeon has Bang Ji protecting him, Yeon Hee gathering intelligence , Nam Eun and Jo Joon assisting him and in future the Queen and Crown Prince Bang Seok backing him up.
Bang Won has Moo Hyul and Yong Gyu protecting him, Boon Yi gathering intelligence, Ha Ryun  assisting him and Lady Min and her father backing him up. There are two wild cards here who are the game changers, who have enough power to tilt the scales completely  in one side's favor, but have so far not chosen to.

The first one is King Taejo aka Yi Song Ye, though he sides with Jung Do Jeon and his queen regarding Crown Prince decision, his presence was crucial for Bang Won's survival, without Yi Song Ye, Bang Won would have been surely killed by Jung Do Jeon and his supporters a lot earlier. The very fact that the King wont stand still and see his son die prevented them from removing Bang Won from their path.Though finally they went for it , when it seemed that Bang Won had gained enough power to topple the crown prince once the king dies a natural death, since the queen is no longer there to protect the crown prince.

The second one is Moo Myung aka Nameless , if they side completely with one side and throw their full weight, it would definitely tilt the scales....  since even now the extent of the organization's full power is unknown and not to mention they have enough people to implement and succeed in their plans, people to gather intelligence like the Choi Yong and JooKryun of Biguk Temple and people who can execute plans like Gil Sun mi. So far they have not yet chosen a side because unfortunately for them both sides detest their organization and dont want to be partner to it.But sooner or later they will have to pick sides and the side that is the least damaging to their ideology may win out , in that case it might be Bang won's side.

But we are still missing some people on Bang Won's side , Hawang Hui and Jo Mal Saeng.... hope they are coming soon to join the game....

'Six Flying Dragons' Yoo Ah-in reveals to Sin Se-kyeong, "I should become king"

(Source)

photo684422.jpg

On the 38th episode of SBS' Monday & Tuesday drama, 'Six Flying Dragons', Yi Bang-won (Yoo Ah-in) revealed his ambition to Boonyi (Sin Se-kyeong).

Yeon-hee (Jeong Yoo-mi) advised Boonyi that Yi Bang-won was holding different ideas and she should keep a distance from him. Although Boonyi noticed Yi Bang-won and Jeong Do-jeon had been conflicting with each other, she herself wanted to confirm it.

Boonyi asked Yi Bang-won about this. Yi Bang-won confessed his path was different from Jeong Do-jeon.

Boonyi was disappointed with Yi Bang-won's change. Yi Bang-won asked Boonyi, "You said we should do something at least as far as we are alive. Did you give up on the idea?" He also said there's nothing he could do in the new nation and he could not withstand it any longer.

Yi Bang-won confessed he should become king to be able to do something at least. And he also said that, for his goal, he would need Boonyi.

I really wish she endup choosing her brother!!!  :._.:

The historical background to help understand Ep. 37~38

tumblr_inline_o2decjIvyB1s5yhgo_540.jpg

â–  The establishment of Joseon (July 17, 1392)

In July 1392, about 3 months after Poeun Jung Mong-Joo was killed, King Gongyang made his last-ditch effort to save Goryeo dynasty. He visited Yi Seong-Gye’s house and urged the general to conclude a pledge of alliance between sovereign and subject.

“If it had not been for you, how could I sit on this throne? How can I forget about your exploits? In the name of heaven and earth, we should promise to prevent us from harming each other for generations. Let’s conclude this alliance.† It means he will not hand over the royal seal to Yi Seong-Gye so obediently.

Instead of answering to the King’s request, Yi Seong-Gye’s followers flocked together to petition Queen Dowager (Lady Ahn) for the deposition of King Gongyang. She was forced to write her third command to depose a king after King U and King Chang, and handed it to them.

In July 12, 1392, King Gongyang was finally deposed, which made the 474-year-old Goryeo dynasty come to an end. (AD 918~1392) Five days later, General Yi Seong-Gye ascended the throne, and Joseon dynasty had begun.

â–  Dumoon-dong village ë‘ë¬¸ë™ æœé–€æ´ž

The following is “unofficial†historical records or folk tales. So, we don’t know whether it is true or not.

After Joseon was founded, many Sadaebu bureaucrats refused to work for the new regime and retired to their hometown. Some of them secluded themselves in Gwangdeok mountain near the capital and lived together in a village. Their village was called Dumoon-dong (ë‘ë¬¸ë™ æœé–€æ´ž) which means “a village with a locked gate.†King Taejo (Yi Seong-Gye) took carrot-and-stick approaches to them, but neither threats nor placation had any effect on them. After all, King Taejo ordered to set the village on fire, sincerely hoping that they would run out of it. However, they refused to go outside and almost everyone were burnt to death. From then on, the martyred scholars have been called Dumoon-dong 72 sages (ë‘ë¬¸ë™ 72현, æœé–€æ´žä¸ƒå二賢).

The problem is, there exists no contemporary historical record about it. The first official mention of the village appeared in 1740, about 350 years after Joseon was founded, when King Youngjo (reign 1724~1776) asked the origin of the name of the place during his royal tour. The local people answered the king like this.

“When King Taejong (Yi Bang-Won) conducted the state examination, about 50 Sadaebu families boycotted it. They locked their gate and didn’t go outside. That’s why their village was called Dumoon-dong.â€

King Youngjo ordered his subject to write a poem of praise to honor their loyalty, and put up a memorial stone there. The king also announced that he would appoint a government post to any descendent of the Dumoon-dong martyrs, but only 2 or 3 people were found. As time goes by, the number of would-be Dumoon-dong martyrs increased to 72. Moreover, the lists of them are all different from place to place. That’s why some historians doubt that Dumoon-dong folk tale is either an invented story or an exaggerated truth.

In addition, there is no historical record that Yi Bang-Won set the village on fire. It was unlikely for him to commit such a crime (even if it is true) under the political situation where Prime minister Jung Do-Jeon was holding full power over the government.

However, maybe for a dramatic effect, Sageuk drama writers really loved to describe it as Yi Bang-Won’s atrocity. I think SFD’s refreshing interpretation of Dumoon-dong incident did Yi Bang-Won justice. Good job, writers!

â–  Hwang Hee í™©í¬ é»ƒå–œ (1363~1452)

Hwang Hee is the most respected prime minister throughout the history of Korea. He started to work as Goryeo’s civil officer at the age of 14, and his total incumbency for both Goryeo and Joseon government reached 73 years. He helped to build up the golden age of King Taejong and King Sejong’s rule.

According to a folk tale, Hwang Hee is known as one of the Dumoon-dong survivors. When Goryeo had been fallen, he was 29-year-old civil officer. He decided to live in Dumoon-dong, but other old scholars urged the young man to leave the village in order to work for the people. While the old men perished in flames, Hwang Hee survived and served the kings of Joseon from then on.

As I said earlier, Dumoon-dong story is likely to be a fiction, so Hwang Hee’s story is also unreliable folk tale.

In Tree with Deep Roots (2011, SBS), Hwang Hee appeared as a silver-bearded benignant prime minister who overlooked King Sejong’s creation of Hangul alphabets. In Six Flying Dragons (2015~2016, SBS), the writers added a refreshing interpretation that he returned from Dumoon-dong to get back at Yi Bang-Won. It would be interesting to see how Yi Bang-Won would turn his mind in the future.

â–  The Crown prince issue (August, 1392)

The following is recorded in the Annals of Joseon dynasty (ì¡°ì„ ì™•ì¡°ì‹¤ë¡ æœé®®çŽ‹æœå¯¦éŒ„).

In August 20, 1392, about one month after Joseon was founded, King Taejo (Yi Seong-Gye) discussed with his 3 core ministers (Jung Do-Jeon, Jo Joon, Bae Geuk-Ryeom) over who should be the Crown prince of Joseon.

Bae Geuk-Ryeom advised the king to choose the eldest son. Jo Joon told him “During the reign of peace, the eldest son should be chosen. During the turbulent times, however, the son with the most contribution should be made the crown prince.â€

King Taejo’s eldest son, Yi Bang-Woo (Prince Jinan) had the legitimacy. However, he refused to become the Crown Prince and secluded himself in a mountain hermitage. His anger at his father made him drink too much that he got sick and died in December of 1393, one and a half year after Joseon was established.

The king’s sons with the most contribution refer to Bang-Gwa and Bang-Won. King Taejo’s 2nd son, Yi Bang-Gwa (Prince Youngan), was a military officer who fought with his father in countless battles. Meanwhile, the king’s 5th son Yi Bang-Won (Prince Jeongan) made the biggest contribution to establish the new country by helping his father make connections with Sadaebu scholars in the political world. Most of all, Bang-Won rescued his father’s followers from danger by killing Poeun Jung Mong-Joo on Seonjuk bridge.

However, King Taejo (Yi Seong-Gye) wanted to establish Yi Bang-Beon (Prince Muan), his 7th son born from Queen Shindeok / Lady Gang (his second wife) because he loved and respected the Queen so much.

King Taejo’s first wife, Lady Han (Queen Shinui), died of an illness one year before Joseon was established. At the time, Lady Gang (Queen Shindeok) was the only legitimate Queen of Joseon. Her family was one of the most powerful noble clans in Goryeo, and she had made every efforts to support her husband. Most of all, Yi Seong-Gye loved her so much. The actual power was in her hands. How could the ministers oppose to her?

One thing the ministers were afraid of was that Yi Bang-Beon (Prince Muan) was too thoughtless and rash. They advised the king “If your majesty really want to choose from the Queen’s two sons, the youngest one is better.†Therefore, the king’s 8th son, Yi Bang-Seok (Prince Uian), was established as the Crown prince.

In this political situation, Sambong Jung Do-Jeon couldn’t refuse the king’s earnest request. Moreover, in his ideal Joseon, the monarch is but a decoration flower supported by Sadaebu roots. The grown-up princes didn’t fit for the role. Maybe, he wanted to raise the 10-year-old prince as his ideal Confucian ruler? Yi Seong-Gye was still strong and healthy, so Jung Do-Jeon might think that he had enough time to educate the little prince.

Their misfortune was that Queen Shindeok died of an illness in 1396. If she had stayed alive much longer, Yi Bang-Won (Prince Jeongan) couldn’t have dreamed of rebelling against Jung Do-Jeon in 1398.

My Moo Hyul x Sa Kwang ship sank without ever sailing D:

I hope the writers don't kill off Boon Yi though. Are the writers for this and Tree With Deep Roots the same? Considering BY is a fictional character, they don't have to follow the same ending as in TWDR.

I think King Taejo abdicated after seeing his sons fighting for the throne. There's no stopping Bang Won after Sambong died, not even the King probably since he has his own private army and support of Min family.
