A Florida pastor set fire to more than 2,000 Bibles that he believed to be Qurans before authorities could extinguish the flames and arrest him.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Rev. Terry Jones and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., set out to burn 2,998 Qurans, one for every victim of the 9/11 attacks. The two men were arrested Wednesday on felony charges as they drove a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck “towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with Qurans soaked in kerosene.â€

Sheriff’s officials said that the trailer caught fire as the truck was being towed. After the fire department extinguished the flames, a closer examination revealed that the books, which were stacked inside highly flammable cardboard boxes, were actually Bibles.

“We don’t condone the burning of any religion’s holy book,†said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, “but we were absolutely sickened to discover that Pastor Jones reduced a couple thousand Christian Bibles to ashes.â€

While Jones was not available for comment, Frann Ingram, a spokeswoman for his Dove World Outreach Center, said that Jones ordered copies of the Muslim holy book wholesale from Amazon. “They were supposed to arrive on the 10th, but they were a day late. We were in a hurry, and we didn’t check inside the boxes.â€

“I’ve been praying for God’s forgiveness non-stop since this happened,†said Ingram. “I still feel like the Muslims are partially to blame for this. If we didn’t have to protest them, this wouldn’t have happened. They tricked us!â€

While there is no law against burning Bibles or Qurans, Jones and Sapp were charged with unlawful conveyance of fuel and several traffic violations.

Opponents of Jones’s evangelical church hope that his arrest will prevent future anti-Muslim protests. His congregation burned the Quran in March 2011, and last year he promoted an anti-Muslim film. Both incidents sparked violence in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

The remaining Bibles are being held as evidence until the case is resolved, and authorities say that six boxes of Bibles remain completely unscathed. “I think those six boxes are miracles,†said Sheriff Judd. “Proof that He will protect His word to the best of His ability.â€

Both of these comments are disgusting.

I realize that the Sheriff is christian, but that wasn't a professional statement at all.

Lol, Christians prove once again that intelligence is not part of their lifestyle.

That jesus freak would not have cared one bit if it was actually Qurans that had been burnt. Quran is "we don't really condone it", bibles is "we were absolutely sickened"

religious freaks everywhere in Florida.

Yeah, because a whole religion can be responsible for your idiocy.

Also, I have a feeling that the Sherriff wouldn't have minded so much if Qur'ans had been burnt. He sounds like a close-minded Christian, to me.

And again..............another stereotype/judgment that some Christians must go against. Just the posts here prove that all the antis have to conclude that "CHRISTIANS are....."

"That's why I don't like Christians..." Generalizing ALL of them are LIKE THIS one...................

How bad is it that I laughed? These people are just so stupid. They were even too stupid to carry out their show of primal hatred.

I don't generalize Christians because of one article...I generalize Christians because of the HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of articles like this.

Well, there are more than hundreds of hundreds of Christians out there. There's millions of them........

Billions even. Christians are the biggest, richest and most oppressive culture in the world and they have been for 2000 years. With millions and millions of people having been killed all around the world just because they were not EXACTLY as Christians wanted them to be.

It's hard to say "ah well, Christians are ok" when more people have been killed in the name of Christianity than there were because of the orders of Adolf Hitler.

I did not create this thread so that religion(s) can be spat on or for religious people to feel uncomfortable on a personal level. If you choose to continue this discussion, please do so within respectable parameters.

It helps if you can be sensible too.

Generalizing a group of people by the actions of some individuals is like assuming that the entire group approves of it all. That is unrealistic, just as it is to assume approval cannot come from outside that group.

And once again the indoctrination of Christianity becomes clear...say ANYTHING about the thousands of years of injustice Christianity is responsible for and people act as if they are the biggest victims in the history of the world.
