*Sonyeo Hyelim: The Girl Next Door (Vogue Girl interview)

[*sonyeo (소녀) = young girl.]

"Snip". The short-clipped hairdo & red lips were attention grabbers. "Titter." As she laughed out, the crescent-shaped eyes & cute voice were the same as old. Longing a little, "Sonyeo Hyelim."

Q: Like with today, is it your first photoshoot with such a vintage concept?

A: Yes. I was so excited after learning about today's Vogue Girl magazine phootshoot. Haven't tried a pictorial session in this style before. Prior to this opportunity, I had craved to savor such an experience, & was filled with anticipation as a result. The wardrobe I get to wear today was already more than agreeable. Accessorized with these dainty retro ornaments, it made me feel extra beautiful, & the filming session also became more enjoyable. Surprisingly, compared to what I thought were trendy garments, I'm discovering that this type of vintage wear is what's more suitable for me. So much so that I'm thinking Korean fashion finally go together with me. (laugh)

Q: Due to the genre of this album, you've been looking so solemn onstage. But you're originally as cheery & vivacious as the girls of your age, something which people also felt a close affinity for. Yet I heard that your favorite music genre is love ballads & similar quieter songs?

A: You're right. Compared to uptempo & energetic songs, I prefer calmer & quieter tunes more.

Q: Do you often go to watch other musicians perform?

A: Not as often recently. But I really like to attend such shows. My most memorable was John Mayer's concert. While touring with WG in America, I also got to watch Eminem's & Jay-Z's concerts.

Q: Which musician do you often listen to recently?

A: A British singer named James Bay. I've listened to his entire album, & found it to be very agreeable. His guitar melodies are top-notch, & his dreamy sound is superb too. Ideal to listen to when it rains.

Q: There's a saying: "To know a person, just look at his (her) mobile phone playlist." What music does Hyelim mainly listen to?

A: I often listen to Selena Gomez's Good For You. For someone who does mainly uptempo songs, she sang that song with such a great feeling. Very refreshing, I love it. Also, The Weeknd's dreamy songs, which I have listened to a lot recently.

Q: Is Hyelim prone to severe mood swings?

A: I'm the type with severe mood swings. That's why I'm also the type who follow my heart & then ponder about what I did. (laughs)

Q: So that's why you often post chicken soup or words of wisdom on Instagram. For those prone to mood swings, chicken soup tends to look healing.

A: Now that you've mentioned it, that really seems to be the case. I'm always saving every nice quotation I see on Tumblr or Pinterest. Reading those quotations is very uplifting for me. Moreover, I'm very sensitive to weather changes. Whenever I wake up a little gloomy in the morning, it shall in all likelihood be a bad weather day. Conversely, if I wake up feeling good, the weather will typically be sunny.

Q: Aren't all the group members living together in a dorm? You shouldn't feel too lonesome then. Saw you guys on Instagram boiling myiyeokguk (seaweed soup) to celebrate one of your members' birthday. That was very touching.

A: Yes. On that day, everyone got together to write birthday greetings on paper slips for Sunmi & to cook myiyeokguk for her, which was very nice. The way we members take care of one another, my parents in Hong Kong needn't be too worried for me.

Q: You're the maknae at home too, right? Parents are always worried about their youngest daughters living alone. Or did you get to make your own decision?

A: No matter what, my parents were very concerned when I first came to Korea as a trainee. As time went on, they weren't as worried as before. I have been in Korea for 10 years, & have adapted.

Q: Probably because to this, you have definitely shown a growing self-confidence recently. Whether it's stage presence, posture, facial expressions, et al., you now have a better grasp of how to look more cool.

A: I think the change only began with this album. Our hiatus was very long, so there was ample time to rest. Prior, I wasn't just clueless but was also listless. Always lacking composure whether it's onstage or during photoshoots. Nowadays, I've feeling more capable in everything, & have greater confidence in myself.

Q: In any case, you're in an uncommon profession. Compared to your peers, you get to try more concepts. Any particular style you really want to tackle?

A: A very sexy concept. To me, sexiness doesn't mean cosmetics, but rather to look natural. Like the feeling of wearing only a bathrobe after showering. Every woman has that kind of relaxed comfort while at home. Such a demeanor may seem to be just natural, but for me it increasingly embodies sexiness.

Q: As they say, "morphing girls are unimpeachable" (ì—¬ìžì˜ ë³€ì‹ ì€ ë¬´ì£„). After your hairdo & makeup makeovers, the response was really enthusiastic. Seeing your new image, many girls want to morph like you did too. Please give some tips to your peers who want to change.

A: Changing hairdos & makeup are indeed great methods, but the priority is to have an accurate grasp of who you are. For example, there are many types of short hairdos. Everyone have their own personalities, & as such shouldn't blindly seek the trendiest hairstyle. It's better to find a suitable hairdo before morphing, which I think is the wisest choice.

Q: You've been in Koea for 10 years, & has debuted with WG for 5 years. Ever feel how fast time seems to pass?

A: You're right. Felt the same every time I searched for previous shows to watch. In order not to forget the original choreography, I would occasionally review our old videos. Seeing how I looked a few years ago always felt very strange. During those moments, I was truly able to sense how "time flies".

Q: Hyelim grew up in Hong Kong. What was your childhood like?

A: A kid who grew up beloved in my whole family? Even so, I was a very bashful child at that time. While mischievious & lively with those I'm close to, I was also a very shy girl in front of strangers.

Q: Well, you've become a very chatty & fun-loving woman now.

A: Really? It's hard to believe now, but except with a couple of buddies, I used to be quite uncommunicative. Seldom even raised my hand to speak in school. Occasionally, the teacher would ask me a question, & I would blush a deep red, even turning tongue-tied. Still, school was very fun. I went to an international school, & had friends from various countries as a result.

Q: What is Hyelim's idea of a "sonyeo"?

A: A sonyeo's heart is filled with many dreams. Bright, cheerful, fresh & pure. Like a white flower.

Q: Anything that Hyelim wants to achieve before the year is out?

Q: My happiest thing this year was letting the public hear my own music. Furthermore, my own song was our first show recording during the comeback, which was truly unforgettable. So before the year is out, I want to create another song. Currently while digesting our schedule, I have been working hard at composing something during our breaks. When inspiration hit, I would be writing & writing, striving to create, so please look forward to it.
