Lack of iconic video game characters?

I can't really think of any recently debuted video game characters who became icons in pop culture.

We have loads from the past, examples: Mario, Sonic, Street Fighter's Ryu and Ken, Lara Croft, Donkey Kong etc.

The most recent I can think of would be Master Chief from the Halo series. Am I missing any?

That's largely because there's no substantial franchises that follow a single character.

Closest you have in recent history is Nathan Drake and Sora (and arguably the shepards).

Add on top of that franchise saturation with one of the planet's largest industries and yeah, you're kinda not gonna get anybody stand out.

i think part of it has to do w/ the amount of games available nowadays compared to the past and the fact that the games you mentioned are literally pioneering lol so of course they get more recognition. it's also hard to measure the popularity of characters in their generation. part of the reason these characters are considered iconic is because they've stood the test of time

Last Of Us! - Ellie tho

Definitely Ellie. Her impact was huge. I would add Clementine and Lee from Telltale's The Walking Dead

And hopefully Max and Chloe will be added to the list after episode 5 is released in October

I agree with Ellie.. how is Clementine And Lee make an impact tho? tho the story was good.

Max is getting there. Chloe, I am not sure..

Ellie is not iconic.

Ellie is a very good character from a very great game.

You're probably not going to find her in pop culture references a decade from now.

you will be surprise… Ellie will be iconic.. Naughty Dog isn’t going to let go of Ellie easily..

what about final fantasy or kingdom hearts characters? phoenix wright is pretty popular too, maybe the witcher or assassin's creed (but not a particular character, just that general assassin, hood + hidden blade concept tbh)

agreed, we can only really talk about iconic characters after they've been popular for a decade or so tbh

plus, i think part of why older characters are so easily recognizable is their character design, since older platforms had a lot of restrictions such as number of colors used, resolution, etc., their design had to be more creative but nowadays it's basically just:

Alot of games now are multiplayer focused as well. At least I don't play alot of single player games as much.

I think it's mostly this.

My generation knows the classic game characters and the systems they were from. Even if you didn't have it, you knew. These days, it's not the case. Multiplayer does change that up, and how more games are offering customized gaming experience, there is no defined character from series anymore that can just be generally recognized.

Mario is so classic parents know who it is. Master Chief, most parents won't get it from the HALO world, and if you had a parent who served in the military will be wondering why you are going on about some Navy NCO.

Creating new franchises are business risks and most video game companies would rather stick to rehashing their old franchises because the brand name they come with guarantees some sales. It's why we see so many reboots (Tomb Raider, Castlevania, DmC, Rayman, Thief etc.). Trying to create a new IP means spending even more on marketing, which is already such a massive cost. Hard to make an icon when we're using the same names from twenty years ago. Not to say there aren't those that manage to make successful new IPs (Splatoon & The Last of Us being good examples), it's just an OTT business risk few are willing to take.

Combine that with a bigger move to make the MCs customizable avatars and the fact that there are just too many names to choose from to give the marketing push to make 'iconic' and you prolly have a few reasons as to why.

I think there are a few that make the jump to mainstream media, it's just on a small scale. Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney and the 'objection!' thing is something I've seen referenced a few times in things. I'd honestly say Wii Fit Trainer and Dr.Kawashima are the two that had the most memorable output last generation xD. My dad, grandma and others all remember 'the brain training man' and the 'nice fitness instructor'. It's not really the same, but it's the closest I can think of.
