Is now the time for an idol to come out?

Being gay is still taboo in Korea, but I was thinking... there's no one in pop culture there going against the grain, and trying to make it normal, like it is. We've seen people of power in the Western world for years now campaign for the rights and seen many figureheads come out and do great things for the LGBT community and give us normal living rights.

Is that what Korea needs to be put in the right direction and start a movement that should have begun years ago? Someone big in the press, not afraid and ready to stand up for themselves and acknowledge a massive elephant in the room? Discuss.

The likelihood of any celebrity coming out is almost zero, not if they want to keep their careers and continue to live comfortably in South Korea. I don't think any idol is ready for that. Most idols are seen as glorified puppets anyway, for someone in the entertainment industry to really make an impact, it would need to be an extremely popular and well loved actor.

Doubtful. The image/role of an idol and the conservative nature of entertainment companies would make it very hard for a person to come out as LBT and/or Q. I doubt a company itself would allow the idol to come out and if so I do not think Korea would be receptive. It would be lovely to see a brave idol come out but I think there would be a lot of push back per current news related to equal rights/LBTQ news. Unfortunately, it is better to be silent and/or tight-lipped about one' sexuality than risk exposure in Korea and/or conservative nations.

An idol or actor who has nothing to lose should go for it. Coming out will never be accepted in SK if they keep holding themselves back. But as much as I want a widely popular and well recognised entertainer to do it, it's better for everyone if one that's more famous in the western world and less in SK does so. Or one that comes out of their closet in their will...

If several popular idols came out in the same period it would be okay. Maybe. Really Maybe.

But there's no way South Korea would accept a gay idol that is averagely popular... Even a popular one would have some troubles getting back on the top of their popularity but I think it is possible if they really are super big. Koreans people seem to "forget"/ shrug what is "wrong" off easily. So if they come out and then never mention it ever again, it will be silently in their mind that this idol is gay. They will be shocked at first, but ignore it later on. This is what I think.
