What would your counterargument be to this?

So on one of the rare times we were short staffed and i had to work the streets,i usually just work at the branch (armed guard). I was assigned to work with this guy basically we get a route and go pick up money for busineses.and we start talking get comfortable with each other...when he says " man were unlucky we got the black route". So i was like " what does that mean?". He's like we got forest heights area the ghetto route with mostly black folk...higher chance of getting shot up and robbed. And i guess from my facial expression he could tell i got uncomfortable with this conversation and got defensive. "I mean the areas are poor and it just so happens black people live there. I was like "cool cool don't need to explain yourself man :). So couple hours later out of nowhere he brings up,"what i was saying to you earlier though...you know it's true blacks are the most prone to violence and crime, they are the minority and yet 80-90% fill up our jails." And honestly i don't know if those statistics are true or not but i didn't have a counter argument to that. I just gradually changed the subject.. What would you have said to counter that if someone said that to you?

Racial profiling.

They're more likely to be stopped/frisked and arrested for no reason.

It just further perpetuates dumb stereotypes that Black people are more likely to commit crimes, when in reality, they're actually arrested more often.

^This. Blacks are also less likely able to afford bail or decent lawyers.

i'd probably have said social classism and reluctance to give people of certain ethnicities jobs is what (in part anyway) drives their criminal activities. and that it wasnt to do with race (like at all) and a lot to do with the poverty cycle (or the ghetto equivalent)

either way the facts may be true, its just the bit with interpreting what that means that gets awkward :/

80-90% <---- even if this isn't true, a majority of prisoners are minorities.

So minorities may fill up the jails but you are also in a society that favors white males as well as a justice system that isn't entirely free of racism.

It's not exactly unheard of cops to be prejudiced against minorities and more easy going on people who are white. Not only is it not exactly unheard of, it's documented in videos of unnecessary police brutality, shootings or otherwise.

American society favors white males. It is what it is until societal change has the time it needs to make a difference in how people treat each other on a general level of interaction.

Which part? So you don't think he was being a little racist?

A simple Google search will tell you the majority of incarcerated men in the US are African American. However his numbers were wrong. It's not 80%-90%, it's like 40%-60%. I don't know if he was being racist per se, I tend to not care about that stuff so I don't catch on to it, but if someone said that to me I'd just think they were being cautious of the area they were in.

Black people face systematic oppression in Murica', discriminated when it comes to job opportunities, have poorer access to better schools, hospitals etc. The judicial system also just so conveniently happens to work against them too. This applies to Hispanics to an extent too and other ethnic minorities. The entire system is set up for white males.

Btw he's not white..he's spanish and i'm asian...so wasn't a white person that said this to me

You don't have to be white to buy into what someone says based off of societal conditioning.

We're conditioned to fear a black man walking down an empty street towards us, not the little old white man who could actually be the one who is carrying the gun -- you don't have to be white to have this perception.

It's not uncommon for other ethnic minorities who are slightly better off than their counterparts to adopt such attitudes, white supremacist media and government do a good job at spreading their propaganda.

Oh my god, I wrote a ten page research paper on a really similar topic. It was more about drug use and incarceration rather than violence though. But in regards to that, there are much higher rates of drug use among white rural men and yet most of those incarcerated are urban black or Hispanic men. What happens sometimes as well is that a white man will be arrested for a crime and receive the minimum sentence and will be on parole while a black man will be sentenced to prison for the same crime.

Also I'm going to the University of Maryland lol
