Omg... we don't let kids use scissors for fear of their safety...

I understand that even the disabled have a right to protect themselves, but you need to be able to use it in a safe manner, otherwise you are just defeating the purpose of using a weapon for protection.

Why not? Are not disabled people the most vulnerable? I get the risks in all but they need to be safe to, and since they are disabled they need a fair chance for thier life just like "normal" people.

because, well their blind... you have to be able to see to shoot your target lol

fair point, but then how mean can the disabled use to defend themselves in a worse case scenario...a whistle?

well it would depend on how blind you are, where and how close your target is, etc but that is subjective and there are a lot of variable to consider in this decisions. If someone is blind in thier house alone, I am sure the sound of a gun will scare off intruders. I have very poor eye sight and have been close to being mugged before, I wish I had a gun (not to kill maybe to stun them). Its better than someone who doesn't have the best eyesight be able to at least have the means to protect themself than leave them vulnernable to being robbed.

non lethal weapons like pepper spray and tasers?

I mean, equality is important, but blind people simply don't have the faculties to be able to shoot a gun. For the same reason we shouldn't allow a mentally challenged person to have/do certain things they can't handle, we shouldn't allow people with physical disabilities to do things they can't be 100% at in life or death situations. I'm sure no one's okay with blind people driving, since they can endanger other people and themselves; so why would we allow them to have a lethal weapon that they can also endanger others with?

Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people from obtaining weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. She said federal law requires states to analyze a situation individually before denying a service.

"The fact that you can't drive a car doesn't mean you can't go to a shooting range and see a target," Hudson said.

so you want them to have a gun and shoot at people...they can't see.....:._.:

They could learn hand to hand self defense. Giving them a gun puts them and everybody anywhere near them in a huge amount of danger, and any blind person stupid enough not to realize this doesn't deserve a gun anyway.

Bullets that are meant to hurt (they aren't mean to pierce because they aren't pointed but are blunt and wide) a target not really kill them seem more effective than some spray. Again the sound of a gun being loaded is more effective than pepper spray and a taser which requires precise or worse aim. A gun just the sound of one will make people think twice, but then again some tasers are shaped as guns.....that may work. I still think a good old fashion hand gun (bullets that aren't mean to pierce) is good enough. If blind people can play insturments like the piano I am sure they can learn how to shoot a gun with "some" precision, right?

I'm not saying that visually impaired individuals should be allowed to use ranged weapons for the obvious reason that they could mistakenly shoot someone else, but simply owning a gun regardless of a disability doesn't make much of a difference.

EDIT: I'm also sensing that people think that blind people will go on a shooting spree because they are blind, which is ludicrous.

I hope you know there are some ppl who fall under the category of being 'legally blind' but they can MOST definitely see. It's just their eyesight isn't exactly 20/20.

I think the disabled are already at a disadvantage in that respect already, you know? I mean they get the short end of the stick in everything. In terms of what would be ideal, the disabled would have caretakers, or they would at least live in centres where they would have someone who was competent enough to handle weapons or phones, or whatever so that they would have some degree of security.

Unfortunately, as society is lazy, hypocritical, and treats these people akin to trash, what would be more practical would be things like panic buttons or alarms. Giving them weapons is not only dangerous to other people, but to themselves as well.
