So, I decided to create this Mega Thread so we can all get involved and help each other out as we can. I've been helping out a lot of freshmen this semester and even helped a few friends pass some test with tips and tricks I found online and passed them along.

College is one of the biggest events in a young adults life and also the hardest. I've noticed a lot of freshmen are afraid to ask for help and or guidance and I understand. I was there once and I feel having this thread were its a safe place and we can send each other encouraging messages and possibly send each others messages on things we can help each other with. Such as math, science and or language classes.

Disclaimer: These aren't my tips unless stated other wise

If you have any tips please let me know so I can add you to the top and give you credit. Also I will start a list on things people could possibly help tutor someone.

Its Fall 2015 Guys. I know you can slay this year and I know you can do it. I believe in you.

How To Wake up

Go to bed early aka after studying. Make sure your alarm is set. Set your alarm 2 hours before class in 15 minute Intervals (example. If I need to get up at 9. I set my alarm at 7. So I'll set an alarm at 7, 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, and then again at 7:55 5 mins before 8:00.) Get dressed and ready. I recommend a shower before class so your wide awake. Eat fruits, water and or coffee before class and head to class 10-15 mins early for studying.

For those studying another language/psychology/another vocabulary and concept-heavy subject, consider using Anki, which is a free computer app that allows you to make flashcards with audio and visual reinforcements for more efficient memorization. You rate the difficulty with which you recalled each term, and the app calculates the most effective time to show you the flashcard again (sooner if you had a lot of difficulty and later if you recalled easily). You have to pay for the accompanying phone app, though.

Simplynoise is another great white/pink/brown noise generator.

is an audio-based alternative to ibuprofen for headache relief.

Great thread!!

Definitely keep up with readings every week!! It's incredibly important and this is how you will remember things. I tend to read after a lesson because it refreshes my memory.

DO NOT CRAM BEFORE A FINAL. It doesn't work and you will be so sleep-deprived and forget everything. Trust me, it's happened to me a few times. Also, make sure there's some play in your life. School is important, but you need to relax once in a while too!

Have a great semester! And remember, even if you fail a course, it is NOT the end of the world. I've failed a course before, and here I am, a graduate four years later.

Most importantly, avoid getting into academic probation in your first year. It's easy to get out of it, but try not to.

i find that the most important thing though, is to DATE EVERY single due date for assignments and finals and tests etc. This will really help. Check your calendar every week. Plan to finish assignments ahead if you know you have several things going on at once. Really practice your time management skills.

Also, do not work in your first year, this is a bad idea if you're not used to the uni life. Save it for second year because you will know your habits.

And there's one more thing. If 5 or 6 courses is too much for you, do it in summer school, or extend your schooling a bit. You don't have to finish everything in 4 years.

GOOD LUCK

DINING OPTIONS - Always know your on campus options and their schedules. Check the schedule on your school's website or if it's posted in the dining area. Especially check them on holidays that you won't be going home (Labor Day, Spring Holiday, MLK Day), because the schedules during those times will change; some dining areas will close early, others won't be open at all. This saves time, and you won't be wandering around, pulling on doors, hoping that they'll open.

Tips for pulling an all-nighter (both from my experience and internet tips that worked for me):

  • take a nap before: power naps, 1 hr 2 hrs or even better a full REM cycle (~4hrs) if you can fit it in. This website / app is really useful if you stay up late or wanna wake up early to study.
  • avoid caffeine: caffeine makes you crash, so abstain from caffeine the day of your allnighter, and consume it
  •             1.while you're working on your essay, or
  •             2.in the morning when it's time to take your test
  • light exercise: blood flow helps you stay awake and keeps your brain more alert. A few squats or jumping jacks or whatever, it doesnt matter, as long as you get moving. sitting in place for hours while working just makes you sleepy
  • dont get comfortable: hard desk chairs and good posture make me feel way more productive than when I'm slouched over with a blanket over my shoulders
  • snacks:just try not to be like me and spend half of your time 'studying' just eating lmao
  • laughter: during your study breaks watch a funny video or two: I find that when I'm getting sleepy the giggling helps me feel more awake

only do all-nighters as a last resort though. Allnighters really fuck with your memory and make you feel foggy. NBD if you're just writing a paper but a fucking nightmare when you need to take two finals in one day
