Why I no longer consider "hypocrite" as an insult

There are a lot of us who have (and still have) the word "hypocrite" in our repertoire of insults.

Do we disagree with someone else's opinion? One thing it is often said is "you're such an hypocrite", meant as an affront directed towards the person due to the inconsistencies between what they say/believe and what they actually show to the world through their actions.

I used to be offended by the term, also. But some time ago, I stumbled accross an statement saying "I'm an hypocrite, so what?". And then, gradually accepted hypocrisy as a staple part of human nature.

Does this mean I am accepting of it? I believe it's the impact the hypocrisy has the thing that is actually harmful.

You may say you will spend your budget in improving employment, yet you retort with junk contracts disguising them a higher employment percentage rate. That hypocrisy is harmful.

You may be so caught up in your mind... that you forget there are holes in your behaviour. That's human, but don't be harmful.

Discuss!

Well, I've been labeled a hypocrite by my own mother and I kinda agree on it. It's kinda a way of protecting myself because I did something I said I didn't do. It's lying to yourself. As long as it's not harmful, hypocrisy isn't actually an insult. But sometimes we, as humans need to think things through first.

Well I mean everyone has been a hypocrite, but everyone has been a jerk, brat and asshole at some time too. Every insult is based off of a part of human nature, so to me what you're saying can apply to every insult ever. I agree though, but really when you insult someone you're not really saying that they've been that way their whole life, you're just insulting how they're acting right then.

It should be accepted, but it shouldn't be embraced.

Just like selfishness and greed should be acknowledged as a part of human nature and behaviour, but shouldn't just be used as an umbrella excuse, in the sense of 'yeah, well, I'm selfish so f*ck everyone else I won't help anybody' or a 'greed is good!' Gecko-style mantra as seen in movies like Wall Street or Wolf of Wall Street (although that movie was great fun  ).

But denying can be worse. Just like alcohol doesn't have to be bad at all, but when you're an alcoholic being in denial of it can make it worse for yourself as well as the people close to you.

I guess when such things are practised extremely, that things can go bad.

Ah yes, this! Indeed, target the act someone does in some situation, not the entire person or his/her whole life.
