CL's recent comments in an interview she held with New-York based magazine Paper are making headlines.

The 2NE1 member and her well-known bestie designer Jeremy Scott held a photo shoot with Paper magazine, and the interview was just released on September 1. CL's comments about Asian women in particular are getting some negative feedback with some netizens claiming that her statements were insulting.

CL was asked about the definition of "luxury" and her career as a global pop star when she responded, "Girls in Asia are very obedient, shy, timid, quiet, but I can tell that it's changing, and I want them to be stronger and tell them that it's OK to be different. Being special is a luxury, and I don't think we have that. Yet."

She continued, "I think a lot of the young kids right now are looking for something new, and they want to look different. Especially girls, and this is why I'm trying to come out here — to set an example of an Asian girl. A lot of Asian girls love being basic because it's safe. But the thing is, a lot of my fans are those girls, and they want to be bolder, but there's no one they could look up to and be like, 'It's OK to be that way.'"

Some netizens are asserting that her statements about Asian girls being "obedient, shy, timid, quiet" as well as "basic because it's safe" are insensitive.

What are your thoughts?

I actually like CL for her spunk and individuality. But honestly, just because you are shy, obedient, and quiet doesn't mean you're weak. These are all characteristics that deserve merit. Girls who keep to themselves have their own minds and opinions, and are perfectly capable of making decisions that come from personal choice. Not everybody wants to be bold, and you don't have to be that to be ''strong''.

I understand her point of view, especially for her who spent some time abroad. Most of asian countries are conservative, therefore the "BAD BITCH"CONCEPT cant be always well received... However, there is also nothing wrong with being timid and shy... it just depends on one´s personnality.

I dont think she was being offensive tho... people may have had problems with the generalization (Asian Women) and the connotation of being "OBEDIENT", which can be GoodorBad.

omg I do feel that's a very bad generalisation :/  there are so many things that describe being strong and bold, it doesn't mean you have to break the rules, being bad girl, wearing revealing clothes, etc :\

I understand why people are offended, because nowadays Asian women has been working very hard to break all the traditional stereotypes, but it seems like she didn't recognise the effort

What her saying is that Asian women are not as liberated like those girls in the US but yeah she just generalize which can affect other asian countries.  :meow:

EDIT : Asian's are known to be Conservative and Family Oriented and Well disciplined.

yeh man go america!!! freedom!!! yall have liberated women!!!! asians aren't liberated!!!! yall need to free us!!!!!!!!

It feels like this is the wrong way for her to try to set an example for Asian girls, It feels like she is trying to shame a certain type of personality type in order to promote an other.  Her heart maybe In the right place but she is going about it the wrong way.

Funny thing is her whole faux baddest female image makes it seem like she has some insecurities she is desperately trying to hide.

Quiet girls are being themselves unlike CL who clearly acts the way she does because she wants some cred in the Western music industry. I hope she realises that hanging onto the balls of every Western celebrity she comes across makes her look like a desperate clown.

Well, calling many Asian girls "basic" is problematic... I mean, calling this type of personality/behavior "basic" is in itself a judgement. Besides, the way she phrased it makes it sound as if being bolder is better/how everyone should want to be/etc. There is nothing wrong with being shy or keeping a low profile... By saying what she said, she's just creating another stereotype for girls to fit in, instead of "liberating" them...
