Do you find it offensive when people compare western culture and eastern culture?

Like how it is somewhat acceptable to smoke weed in the west but it is a big no in the east ? And how showing an amount of skin is considered cheap in the east but is the norm is the west ?

And how those people(that compare) call the other uncivilized, abomination, etc ?

People who call others 'uncivilized' just because the "others" follow a different set of customs or are apart of a different culture are uncivilized themselves.

it depends on the issue i guess. when it comes to weed i feel it should be legal and accepted worldwide

when it comes to showing skin i feel like you should be able to without being labeled a slut.

but these are western beliefs that i agree with that aren't the same views over there

misread the question. yeah it is annoying when either side tells the other that they're right and the other is wrong. that's just a natural reaction

I was originally going to put an "abandon thread" gif but I want to add something to the conversation this time.

Honestly I don't have a problem with comparing. My problem is with how people handle the comparisons. Almost every discussion about these kinds of things ends up turning out to be a waste for some reason or another. I see people on youtube discussing things like this all the time without attacking each other and the conversation turns out well but that rarely happens in this or other forums.

But how about if the comparison(idk of comparison is the right word) is like "Knetz: HyunA should put on more clothes if she's going to public broadcasts, kids are watching" and "Inetz: Even 14y/o dress that way here I don't see the problem..."

I find it pretty clueless when kpop fans try to put the kpop groups on the same level of popularity as the western acts without knowing the reality. At the same time, I get pretty angry at the western fans for boasting about their artists when kpop acts do not have the advantage that the western acts have which is the universal favoritism.

if you put it that way, then yes the comparison is irrelevant. one is not entitled to change the perspective or say that something is okay without understand the other culture's pov. I wouldn't say that it's offensive tho.. as long as they find out what the problem was after comparing the cultures.. i don't see anything wrong.

The first part of the question I think is normal. People compare all the time. The last part, yeah, that's annoying for both sides to do (because apparently people only think the west is shit and look down on others).

But I like seeing similarities with different cultures and how they grew up. Little things like how one has to have rice on the stove before their parents get home or sewing supplies in the same damn cookie tin all families have. That's kind of cool

I think it's pathetic when Western people think their beliefs are the best and always try to force the rest of the world to accept their definition of whats right and whats wrong.

^^^

Also, no to anyone who tries to exotify the East in the process. "Oh, that's so strange! they're so mysterious! Their beliefs are so mystical and beautiful! Their backwards lifestyles are so quaint!" Ew, gross, go away.

If people are able to leave behind whatever Euro-centric ideals they have and just keep an open mind, I think it can produce very interesting conversations.
