Chris Christie Wants to Track Immigrants Like FedEx Tracks Packages

"At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is"

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said on Saturday that he plans to track illegal immigrants in the same way that FedEx tracks its packages if he is elected president next year.

Speaking at a campaign event in Laconia, N.H., the Republican presidential candidate said that he would ask the FedEx CEO himself, Frederick Smith, to create the system, the New York Times reports. “At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is. It’s on the truck. It’s at the station. It’s on the airplane. Yet we let people come to this country with visas, and the minute they come in, we lose track of them,†he said. “We need to have a system that tracks you from the moment you come in.â€

Christie’s comments arrive as the Republican primary field, led by real estate mogul Donald Trump, proposes tighter immigration plans ahead of the Sept. 16 GOP debate.

“However long your visa is, then we go get you,†Christie said. “We tap you on the shoulder and say, ‘Excuse me. Thanks for coming. Time to go.’â€

Christie did not say how exactly the FedEx tracking system, which scans packages’ barcodes, would be used to track undocumented immigrants. A FedEx spokesperson declined to comment.

Anyway, perhaps tracking is not the right word, but people should not be able to fall off the grid and get lost in the system. The Uk is having a hard time deporting visa law breakers because some of these people get lost in the system and destroy documentation from their previous country. So when customs officials get a hold of them, the process to send them back to their respected country is a long, tedious and expensive process due to lack of personal information. Even harder to deport people when they come in through the channel.

But then again, for the US, how can you 'track' someone when you have absolutely no information on them in the first place? Will you just start resume building when you catch them? And where will we find the funds to track. Anyway, the immigration debate is an extremely complicated issue. I don't think that there is a solution that will make everyone happy.

One thing that really baffles me about the US' immigrations system is that at airports, checkpoints, etc they don't have 'exit control'. Which means if I leave the US, I just go right away to the gate after checking in without any passport control/any checkpoint anymore. While at most countries I've visited, including my own country, Indonesia they have 'entry and exit control' so when people are leaving and entering the country there always have to go through passport control.

government in a way already tracks people like fed-ex boxes, citizens and illegal immigrants alike

but normalize tracking of people and make it okay, by all means, especially if you really are into communism or into how North Korea runs its country

This is a fair assessment and sums up how I feel about the issue.
