"MAXIM" released an official statement on their controversial cover.

Their September issue featured actor Kim Byung Ok kidnapping a woman in the back of the car. The issue became problematic because it seemed to romanticize kidnapping and rape.

MAXIM stated, "Hello. This is editor Lee Young Bi of the magazine MAXIM. The male cover of the September issue of MAXIM featured actor Kim Byung Ok, who is the best at playing the antagonist. The editing team aimed to cast him in an antagonistic role in a Noir film. As you will be able to see from the total photoshoot, the theme cast murder and hiding bodies in a Noir mood, but there is nothing about sexual assault. We did not romanticize sexual assault as a sexual fantasy. We would be thankful if you can see the cut of the photo as a shot that shows the flow of the photoshoot in a condensed manner as scenes in movies do."

What do you think of the above photo?

It sure is about kidnapping or murder but if they had chosen a man inside the trunk, it would have created less controversy. Why always portraying women as victims?

Why are they trying so hard to be edging.

That reach of a statement on thier part lol, it's glamorising violence against women, rape? not sure could be that, could be if your looking at it as someone raping a woman than murdering her - hence the trunk scene. murder? yes - clearly. IDGAF what movie role he's playing - not everyone is up to date on stuff like that so seeing a cover like that can send people the wrong message - think about that next time MAXIM. The woman, tied up in the back of the trunk wasn't necessary at all. What's the point of putting that scene on the cover? You could just have him stand there.....smh.

That cover is truly a shame and I feel like it´s reflecting how some people view women overall. They think it´s okay to portray women as weak, fragile and defenseless. Even in dramas, you would see women get slapped and beat down very often... that´s disgusting and unacceptable!

I think from a purely aesthetic point of view it's an intriguing image. I won't deny that it's also a little bit tasteless, but that's what art is about; pushing the envelope as far as it will go. Personally I'm not too fussed about the image

There are lines that shouldn´t be crossed... If we allow everything in the name of art, people will be doing arts about the holocaust, slavery, genocide...

Edit: oH Shit, they already do.
