[DISCUSION] The current state of MelOn's top ten. Accurate representation of Korea's taste? Fleeting trend?

as you can see melon's current top ten that has been going strong for a few hours now is free of normal "trendy" idol pop songs (except maybe that big bang song, I haven't really listened to it though so idk). Is this showing an accurate representation of a shift in the general public's taste or is this a fleeting trend?

I mean, we all know smtm is popular and songs from the show always chart, but to have multiple songs literally dominating like that at once is quite a feat. Artists that never really did well digitally before this year are suddenly taking over. I don't remember Simon D/supreme team ever doing this well on charts on their own and Hyukoh and Zion T don't need to be talked about.

Is idol music becoming less and less popular overall as we speak? Will this last?

Everything on charts is a trend though, isn't it? I mean the music industry anywhere goes through different eras almost each year. For kpop, last month was girl groups, this month is hip hop. Next month it will probably be rookies that gained attention from company promotions within the last year. We might end out 2015 with a ballad trend that always pops up now and then. The musical tastes of an entire country can't really be generalized, especially not by popular music charts. That's like saying billboard's hot 100 is the tastes for all the U.S... When that's not the case at all.

EDIT: as far as how long it will last, I can see the general public's interest fading as time goes on but hip hop will have a better fanbase in Korea than it did years ago

It's been like this since Busker Busker stormed the charts really. Nothing new. Slow R&B ish songs have always done well on Melon and now k-hip hop is starting to do well. It's all trendy and SK is still rather uniform in what seems to do well but it's definitely changed since 2009-2011

you're right, but sometimes I can't help but view Korea differently because often they show that "herd mentality", same with Japan, which is to be expected. I just feel like Korea's "trends" last much longer than those in other countries. that's just my opinion, though.

It's not, all newly released songs except for that band and Zion.t because of infinity challange

Last month most of top 10 were girl groups songs. Wait for tomorrow and infinity challange song will just eats the chart

It's all about the time you take the capture for top 10

I think it's a phase. I mean, not many big groups have had comebacks lately (except... well...). When there was the girl groups' summer battle, they took most of the top positions and that wasnt too long ago, right? So rather than the country's musical taste changing drastically in a month, I think it reflects the appeal SMTM has. I remember when Unpretty Rapstar was being broadcasted earlier this year, all the songs charted really well too.

But anyway, I do think SMTM has helped the public become more instested in k-hip hop, so if anything I think the audience is more open to diversity/different styles now.  :)

what I find interesting is... do other hip hop songs chart well or just SMTM and songs from known hip hop artist? I honestly don't follow the charts so I couldn't know

Seing Wi ing wi ing still there makes me a proud fan, that song is 2014... almost 1 year old

Well, mostly primary's stuff, loco, and crush have been doing well from the k-hip hop/r&b scene recently. Loco and Crush became big overnight to be honest. Other hip hop songs make it into the top 50 often like Dok2 an Beenzino's, but top ten, only a select few make it and stay there for a bit outside of smtm, it seems.

SMTM has always been like this; they do well for the first 2-3 days then drop off. 'Oppa's Car' is the exception because it really became a weird hit in Korea post-broadcast and seems to have some longevity.

HyukOh and Zion.T are benefitting from the Infinity Challenge effect which is really quite something. Every 2 years, whenever IC does their Music Festival, the lesser-known artists in their line-up shoot up the charts.

In general Hip-Hop is big in Korea, hence the popularity of SMTM and Unpretty Rapstar. Simon D has always been popular, he's the CEO of AOMG and is considered a rapper at the forefront of that scene. Nothing has changed much in that last 4-5 years imo.

It is just the trends.

Last month it was girl groups battle and hence top 10 were dominated by girl groups.

This month, all the girl groups songs are old already and newer hip hop releases from smtm and some rnb songs are doing better.

Just simple as that. Tomorrow, probably IC songs will dominate the chart. It depends on when the songs are released and whether they have longevity to stay on top
