A common conception in K-pop is that when groups reach a certain height in popularity their product (group + company) stop investing as much effort into their music and performances. An obvious reason for many groups are because of age but not all them are in the same situation.

For example there's groups you could say are deteriorating because of their time in the business are SNSD, f(x), Kara, T-ara, etc but what about the groups that debuted sooner and have started stagnating musically (AOA, Apink, SISTAR) or becoming mediocre on stage (EXO, Girl's Day)? Even EXID got one hit song and decided to copy and paste that to follow up, and I doubt anyone would be surprised if their next comeback is the same thing. So is this just exaggeration by people who want to bash these groups and this isn't a thing? Is it all easily generalized that they're tired but stable so they don't need to invest?

I also realized while making this thread that I couldn't think of many high tier boy groups who fit the criteria. What is with the gap there? I'm considering that it's possibly because it just goes unnoticed as the community is a lot more vocal towards girl groups.

Peak Syndrome is a thing. And it does happen everywhere but in Kpop we tend to see it a lot more (?) I think, especially now.

Also, Super Junior is one of those cases, not because the members aren't willing or don't care (it's the opposite really), but SM just...stopped caring post-Hangeng for some reason. Sorry Sorry got huge and after that, SM just didn't try anymore. Devil and their upcoming repack seems way more d the group's effort than the company's which I respect.

it's actually sort of annoying. But at the same time if fans are willing to throw money at groups despite their songs not being as good anymore, the person/people at fault aren't really the ones producing the lackluster albums.

mediocre on stage (EXO,

:imstupid:

guuuuuuulll

They improved so much.. even in past month their stages became A LOT better

Actually, they are slaying live from right to left now with stable vocals(comparatively), improvisation(comparatively) and stuff (shit, Hong Kong concerts and I AM KOREA stages are GOLD)

OFCOURSE they are not ideal and cool enough, but they didn't pass their peak yet~ They are improved from their pastselvs

about the question - everything has it's peak IMO

Happens in every industry. Once you reach a certain level you start resting on your laurels. There are some exceptions, but most popular groups fall into this trap. SNSD's new stuff would flop if a new group released it.

EXO only debut for 3 years, their "peak" sort of come sooner, they were really big really early, but in terms of concept they're doing fine I think, the concepts have been good and different from each other, my concern is that scandals keep happening, members leaving, dating scandals and all sorts, thats probably what is not helping, but they still doing good I guess. But I do agree, for some groups once you reach a certain peak companies know it will sell regardless of quality.

Idk man I think GsD and Exo (esp Exo) have improved a lot since their respective "peaks". And tbh I think Exo is still in their peak time rn tbh, cause I mean there's no evidence that they're exactly falling. The sales just keep getting better and their individual publicity is also improving. Unless u mean with the line up changes, they haven't been really going down from their peak. Anyways I like to think of peaks as a continuous line of success with them just going uphill or at least staying constant, I don't really associate it with just one era.

Anyways the curve is common and natural, it's a bittersweet thing to look forward to and experience.

i think the peak exists also because each group has that ONE song that was so amazingly great/catchy, so then the public has such great expectations for their next releases and think that it should be topped. and sometimes, it doesn't so people are like.. meh.

Also, Ayumi Hamasaki. Oh, poor Ayumi Hamasaki........

Jason Mraz, BoA to a large extent after her U.S. debut, 1st generation boy bands...

The only big act in western pop that has avoided peak syndrome (so far) is Bruno Mars... but he produces all of his own songs and collaborates REALLY well.

Yeah.... :'(

To think my dear Prodge's popularity declined after The Fat of The Land..... :'(

Dunno much about Mars, but I think the guy is a quality artist and a blessing for this somewhat stale current mainstream music scene

I acknowledge the peak effect but for some group like Exid, AOA, etc, I don't think the peak effect is the reason.

I think it's because they have just received a great amount of popularity that their agencies start to invest a lot in them, they speed all the procedures in the albums making process. They try to release a new mini/album within the next months because they don't want the attention to fade and in the end the quality of the songs can suffer.
So I don't think the Up and down era from Exid is their real peak even though its the time when they have the most popularity
