It consists of Wakana (soprano), Keiko (alto) and Hikaru (mezzo). Former fourth member Maya (mezzo) left in May 2009. They were originally formed as a four-person unit by producer and composer Yuki Kajiura to sing theme songs for the Kara no Kyoukai anime film series, but remained together with the exception of Maya after the films had been released. Kalafina's music bears the trademarks of Kajiura's style which includes unorthodox instrument solos, operatic and techno sounds, and complex harmonies and melody lines. Kalafina is confirmed to sing the theme song for the epilogue movie Kara no Kyoukai Mirai Fukuin, slated to release in theater on September 28, 2013 (2013/09/27).
