Summary:

Police were alerted after locals heard a whimpering sound from a shrubbery near an apartment complex in the Gongse-dong neighborhood. In there, an ~6-year-old maltese was found buried alive in a bag.

The dog was barely alive and received medical treatment before being taken to a shelter for abandoned animals.

It was still wearing a leash and the police are now examining CCTV footage from the area to track down the owner.

Roughly 5000 dogs are abandoned each month in Korea during the summer months.

The dog had wounds on face and legs and was afraid of people so they suspect it has been abused.

Update:

It turns out the dog, who is named Chorongi, was not buried alive on purpose after all (Naver).

The owner had left Chorongi and another dog in a friend's custody, however the dogs broke free and ended up chilling out on a nearby road. Three firefighters were dispatched to catch them. The other dog escaped into the mountains while Chorongi got hit by a car.

As the dog was neither moving nor breathing, it was assumed dead and buried next to the road, where it was found the next day.

Chorongi has been recovering well at an animal hospital in Gangnam and will now be returned to its rightful owner.

How can people be so cruel? There are shelters you can take your dog too... I feel such sorrow for this animal, and others in its position.... Some people lack a heart :-/

I could be wrong but last I read most Korean shelters only keep animals for around 20 days before they put them to sleep. I know it's not much different here in the west. Although you're right that a shelter would be much more humane than burying the poor thing alive.

in the US, depending on the state, and time of year, it can be even worse.

My friend found a dog early last summer with no tags. It was a medium-big female mutt, we guessed was probably anywhere from 5-8 years old. She was house trained and really sweet and chill. We all live in apartments and work, so, keeping it was not really something he could do, nor could pretty much any of our group of friends. We put up flyers  looked up lost dogs online and posted on local reddit, but nobody claimed her. After a week and a half, he called no-kill shelters but they were all filled. Then he called normal shelters and the workers were urging him to try and find her a home because all the ones he called (maybe 4) said she'd probably be euthanised after 72 hours if unclaimed.

Finally a no kill shelter said they would pay for food and send a volunteer to walk her during the day for a week, and then bring her to a pet fair. Luckily she was sold there the next weekend :) . Honestly, we were all ready to do like a group adoption if nobody bought her, because the only other option was basically to put her down   I wish people would be more responsible. We are all irresponsible 20 something...and even we were more responsible than the likely adult who bought her.

Im crying. This is so cruel how can one be so mean and heartless????? Can you imagine this dog owner had her for so long and one day "nope" like wtf??? Of course, to a certain degree i understand that certain circumstances makes it harder to keep a dog, but i cannot understand how you could abandon your dog and do such a digusting thing?? A dog is not just a pet, hell no pet is just a pet. its a family member who gives joy and love to other family members, but if you do give the dog away than you want it to be safe and happy, right? Like wtf is wrong with this person to do such a horrible disgusting thing?? I want to slap that person so hard in the face

I have a similar story about a cat  me and my friends found when we were  in our early teens, it clearly wasn't a stray, we have tons of those around living in the nearby ravine, he was house trained and not afraid to approach people.  Someone had clearly abused the poor thing,  he had what looked like cigarette burns on his paws and cut whiskers.  None of us were allowed to permanently keep him, our parents would't allow it, but for a while we each took turns taking care of him, took him to a vet, and paid for his food.  It came to a point where if he was outside and were all outside playing baseball in the neighborhood or in one of our backyards playing cards he would somehow find us and come there.  I remember once he came into my backyard while we were all there and he jumped  onto one of the plastic chairs curled up and took a nap there, it was so cute like he owned the place.

Eventually when winter was coming, we realized he had to be given to a permanent home, so one of my friends found someone and gave him to them.

I still miss the guy, had I been older I probably would have able to convince my parents to keep him.

awwwwwwww

animals are so sweet (domesticated at least) i don't get how or why people abuse and abandon them.

I understand that sometimes situations change, and where you could once afford an animal, maybe you can't anymore...but it isn't an excuse to desert and neglect them...or worse...kill them.

It's good that more people are becoming privy to shelter rescue/adoption over breeders and pet stores. There are too many homeless animals that need homes because sadly...there are too many irresponsible people. What's crazy is...i feel like younger people are much more compassionate.
