I'm not into girl/boy groups (especially with some of the hyper cuteness) in general but I was intrigued enough by Girl's Day after Nothing Lasts Forever. I liked that a lot and was impressed with Minah's vocals. Expectation was a revelation for the obvious reasons, mainly the dance but the song is pretty good too. I've started to appreciate the girls' personalities after watching some of the English subbed interviews. I find them to be quite entertaining on some of those variety shows. They all seem like really good friends who also like to make playful jokes/jabs at each other. I'm not sure how other groups are but the camaraderie between Girl's Day members seems genuine and they all have their unique charms. If I were to use one word to describe each member it would be:

Sojin - Seductive, Yura - Playful, Minah - Bubbly, Hyeri - Mischievous

I've wondered why Girl's Day doesn't do more R&B oriented music. During their pre-debut flashmob performances they sang or danced to American R&B music and apparently the one R&B song on their latest album is their favourite song on the album which makes me think they're all really interested in R&B music. I've seen videos of Sojin and Minah singing English R&B songs as well. As good as they are at being cute and singing songs in baby voices, I'd think that they'd maybe do better to set themselves apart with an R&B-Pop oriented sound. That would be in line with a more mature sensual image where they're somewhere between cute and sexy.

Looks might get me to partially watch a video but I have to like the music in order to feel like searching for other music videos. I admit, I have a hard time distinguishing between girls in a lot of girl groups and it was the same for Nothing Lasts Forever, I could only consistently recognize Minah at first (it probably helped that she has a good voice). After watching Expectation and Hug Me Once, I wonder how I was incapable of distinguishing them apart before. What has been keeping me interested more than usual is definitely the girls' personalities. I think it started with an interview where they're all sitting at a table which they constantly bang with their hands like they're watching a sports game or something, I think Yura punches Hyeri in the shoulder at one point and Hyeri reacts with this shocked look, I thought they were hilarious.

those outfits need 2 go

I agree about the pants...reminds me too much of plumber pants that Mario and Luigi would wear although the girls still manage to look alluring in almost anything.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wonder when I'll get tired of looking at Girl's Day pictures...seems like there are endless pictures and I keep looking at them.

As far as outfits, I think I will always prefer the ones they wore in that Let's Dance video and their official MV. I generally don't like the high cut pants or shorts that go up to their rib cages.

I think JiHae was the best dancer from what I've seen. Unless it's a group where each member plays a different instrument, as far as vocalist only groups, I don't see the point of having more than 4-5 members. It would've nice if JiHae had stayed but I can imagine juggling group activities and going to school could be quite hard and tiring. I just hope that she left amicably.

It's hard for me to pick between Yura & Minah. Minah was the first member I liked but after Expectation, Yura really stood out to me. I've become more appreciative of Sojin and Hyeri as well.

As for fav nic cage movie...what is that animated movie he was in??? In any case I'd probably pick Kick-Ass anyway.

I will never get tired of the girls performing Twinkle Twinkle~

this is my current jam~

R&B style music is something I'd like to hear more from Girl's Day since it seems all the members like American R&B music when you hear them talk about favourite artists in interviews. This track I recall was composed by an American producer so something like this with some Korean influences would be interesting.

That's what of the main attractions to kpop for me.  I have always been into 70's, 80's, 90's music more than anything.  But I have been getting bored and uninterested in modern music.  I was really happy to find kpop because a lot of their influence and sound is kinda retro.

I have a very poor sense of what era, a particular song is from when I listen to it but I sometimes felt when I listened to "modern" or "contemporary" Asian mainstream music, it musically sounded like something that you'd have heard a decade ago in North America. Not to say that somehow Asian music is "behind" North American music but it's sort of intriguing the sense of "time" that a song can invoke compared to when the song was actually made. It makes sense since internet access & youtube wasn't ubiquitous a decade or more ago so it took a longer time for music to spread and influence other parts of the world.

I think it's easy to get bored with any music genre if you listen to it enough non-stop. I guess modern mainstream music probably more so since you'll have companies always trying to cash in on the latest music trend or fad and thus the market gets over-saturated with similar sounding music. I wonder how there can still be so many kpop girl and boy groups today.

so much sojin on the thread right now  :lub:

have you guys seen this video?

i love it because of leeteuk's (orange hair on the right) reaction. He's like "Damn, never knew these girls could sing so well."

:stud:

In spite of the subpar youtube sound quality, it still sounds impressive. Obviously not as good as Davichi but Minah & Sojin really put their emotion into it and let loose. I like how they start looking at each other and having fun with the song. GsD needs more songs that really showcase their passion for singing.

I wasn't really following GsD before JiHae, at the time of NLF, I really had no opinion about any of the girls except Minah. Rewatching some past MVs, I began to like JiHae more. I usually think it's a bit sad when a member leaves. Unless it was because of some obvious friction or blunder, you can never be sure what the real reason was. I don't think GsD is any better or worse off without a 5th member. I think they would've done just as well with JiHae with a song like Expectation.

In my opinion if either Yura or Hyeri had left instead of Jihae, it probably would've made no difference. For me Sojin and Minah are the indispensable members because of their singing talents. To be more frank if a member had to leave at that time, I would've been least disappointed if it were Hyeri (sorry Hyeri fans). Right now, I definitely don't want to see a new member. I don't want to see anybody leave either.

4 members is a good number. If they play games like on that guru pop show, how would they have divided a 5 member group for that balloon squashing hug game?

Yura is so popular, if you realize the photographers and fancamers dedicated to her, you'll have an idea of how important she is to the group. Tbh I think a big part of the fans would be enraged if she left. Of course Jihae had her fans, but I didn't notice so much commotion over her departure, or maybe I didn't pay attention. I was always more attached to the other members than to Jiahe (again @NBM, I'm not saying I hate her, you have a hard time to understand that lol), so I would be sad if any of the other members had left the group instead of her.

But you gave us the best argument for keeping GsD with 4 members, and even number is better for variety shows lol

Yeah I would be upset too if Yura left. When I said that I was thinking more along the lines of the core members that would be essential to maintaining GsD's "sound". Yura is super hot and GsD overall hotness would take a significant hit but I think GsD could survive if she ever left because I don't think the group would suffer musically and there'd still be plenty of hotness left. Of course, it's all just my speculation. If Yura improves her vocal abilities enough then I'll reconsider my opinion.

My variety show comment wasn't meant to be a serious reason for keeping the group 4 members but I'm glad someone got the humour.

^In french the last sentence ends with "bien sur" which means "of course". So they either really do keep in contact with the former members or are super duper liars!

Diamond ring...who got to keep it? Or maybe they refused it...or maybe they gave it to the DreamTea president.

Maybe it's normal but a week to learn and perfect a dance routine seems pretty quick.

Thai dance team cover. I don't think it's very good, the girls don't dance smooth at all.

I agree, it looks really stilted.

I remember seeing some girls do a dance cover at a local community show and it looked a bit odd and stiff. I don't know what the official names for the various dance moves are so I'm making up my own. The open sesame leg spread I think causes a real burn in the thighs as the performers would sort of stand up a bit while doing it (guess it was hard staying in the squat position for it). Their suspenders butt wave was also pretty jerky. I would think the peekaboob hands would be the easiest to do but again, some weird hand movements made it look kinda silly.

I guess the dance is a lot harder than it looks and yet GsD makes it look so easy and natural.

I don't even talk to my friends everyday, but I'm sure they leave msg on social networks every now and then.

I think they accepted it, how could they not? if you sent them a ring from Brazil, and then later received in the mail the return package, wouldn't you feel bad? if somebody gives you something just take it, lol.  Its more polite to accept than to deny such an amazing gift. Plus they probably have no idea who gave it to them, they can't give it back.

I just realized that Yura dropped a diamond ring in that glass of water at the end of the Expectation MV...coincidence???

BTS of the chicken CF

I think this was not posted yet.

If you guys don't have time to watch the whole TWO MINUTES, at least skip to 1:35

Yura is such a tease. I think Hyeri would totally dump Tony if Yura would let herself express her true feelings.

What's DreamTea's address? We should all send them pictures of the gold bikini (or better yet send some actual gold bikinis to them). I'm sure they'll get the hint.

Lesbian concept...why didn't I see that coming with all the Yura-Hyeri kiss teasing. They probably didn't pair up Hyeri and Yura because they might really make out (third time being the charm and all).

Joking aside, I actually don't care much for same sex kissing, always seems like a cheap ploy.

The dancing behind the blinds is a very striking visual. I didn't think they could ever top Expectation...they still may not but this looks pretty promising.

Hyeri looks really good with short hair. I prefer Yura and Minah with longer hair. Sojin...not sure I have a preference. I'm not consciously aware of what sort of head shapes go best with certain hair styles.

I definitely didn't like the "cleopatra" haircuts most of them had in NLF.

I'm surprised how little the dancing behind the blinds occurs in this MV.

I'm curious to see the whole choreo, so far this seems to have less memorable dance moves than Expectation but that's ok, there's still lots to like. Lots of hip movements. The butt shaking seems like that brief moment of butt shaking from Don't Forget Me but put into major overdrive. The tail on the blue outfits is interesting but I really hope they don't wear the outfits with the tails in any live performances because I'm afraid someone might step and trip on it. The outfits and styling is pretty good in general.

The song has such a heavy bass line. It sounds like an anthem. It's bold, I can see it growing on me.

Pretty good showcase. The girls had a lot of fun with the Female President choreo. Not sure what the point was of having the suited guys just stand on the side for the whole thing. I really liked the White Day performance. Someone should've realized that large lightweight beach balls don't travel very far no matter how hard you try to throw them. Seems like they were expecting a lot more fans to be in the pool (it's so huge) but understandably most probably wanted to keep dry and away from the sun under the tent.

Wonder what Yura's dad thinks of the flesh-tone skin tight skirt. Whereas Expectation had the more provocative dances, Female president has the more provocative outfits + butt shots. Kind of interesting how the near kiss is actually not gratuitous since it relates to the lyrics of the song but then out of nowhere comes Yura's "naked" bum close-up which is totally gratuitous. That teaser did a good job of misdirecting me.

I'm still a bit undecided on the song but I think it is a good way to kick off the summer. It was a great idea to pair it with a pool party. I expect reactions to the song and mv to be quite polarizing which isn't a bad thing, it gets people talking or arguing vehemently.

I hope the girls get some good rest.

^ Agreed. There's no problem in liking FP over Expectation. Everybody has different tastes. Both songs have a different sound. Sometimes I might like a song more or less depending on my current mood. I certainly prefer FP over some other GsD's songs. I think FP is more of a party dance song where you just let loose, move, shake, dance, clap in whatever way you like without being self conscious. Expectation was more about the choreo and specific dance moves themselves which were quite precise and deliberate. Expectation was memorable and following up to it was certainly going to be difficult but even though it's a bit early to tell, I think FP will be considered a strong follow-up. It certainly is not a momentum killer.
