Thousands of Maple Leafs fans are huddled together in downtown Toronto on Monday night, hoping their team can again take a lead over the Boston Bruins and clinch their first playoff victory in years.

Toronto's Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri each scored goals in the third period, followed by a single goal from Boston's Nathan Horton. That cut the Leafs' prior lead to 4-2.

But the Bruins then scored a pair of goals in rapid succession late in the third period, tying the game 4-4.

Leafs surprise in 1st round

The scrappy Leafs came back from a 3-1 series deficit to claim back-to-back wins against Boston and tie the series.

Nearly a decade has passed since the Leafs have won a post-season series, a drought that has left their fan base thirsting for victory. Now the team and their fans will see how far the Toronto squad can go.

Even some of the diehard fans say they are surprised how far the Leafs have come.

"They're young, they're so young, they're so inexperienced," said Maple Leafs fan Mario Andrea, who admits that Toronto faces a formidable opponent in Boston.

Hundreds of Leafs fans were tweeting ahead of Monday night's game, describing the tension they were feeling, the work they were avoiding and the playoff dreams still within the team's grasp.

Some were clinging to superstitious rituals in the hope of seeing the Leafs head home from Boston with a ticket to the second round of the playoffs.

Longtime Toronto fan Doug Radford will be putting on the same outfit he's worn when the Leafs won their last two playoff games — a sweater and T-shirt that he will even put on in the same order before tonight's game.

"It's all based on wins, so you just sort of leave things as is," he said.

The buzz surrounding the Leafs has been building throughout this first playoff series, with the team picking up momentum as it forced a seventh game.
