“Am I fresh? Why am I meat?†This was Wu Yifan’s response to our question: “What’s your reaction to people calling you "Little Fresh Meat†(young, handsome rising celebrity). You may think that he has a completely cool facial expression, but in fact he merely widens his large eyes innocently with just a hint of playfulness. â€œLittle Fresh Meat†and â€œWu Yifan†are already synonymous with each other and appear together every few days or so in the headlines of entertainment and fashion news. To the media, Wu Yifan is an elixir capable of attracting readers, but he actually does not feel anything towards those three words (associated with him). His current state proves that he is worthy of this title -  He is very handsome, extremely charming, and eloquent as well. He is the most popular young male actor and singer, someone the whole country recognizes as a representative of (the generation of) â€œpost-90s Little Fresh Meatâ€.

 

Wu Yifan’s popularity increased rapidly in an extremely short amount of time. His activities are frequently headlined in entertainment news, and his outfits are constantly given a detailed breakdown on fashion news portals. As long as he is involved in an event, the reported title will include â€œLittle Fresh Meat Wu Yifan†to catch the reader’s eye. Wu Yifan is constantly in the public eye. He is sought after by the fashion industry, which is no doubt why Wu Yifan, (worthy of the title of) <Stylish Man>, graced the solo cover of our men’s fashion magazine.

 

To most people, Wu Yifan rose to fame in the blink of an eye. On the outside, it appears that he could probably be a little too lucky, but the truth is, Wu Yifan has gone through his fair share of hardships which he did not reveal to the public. “I don’t think it is due to good luck. A successful person does not rely on luck alone, luck only takes up a very, very low percentage, the ratio is definitely 1% luck 99% hard work. Many people look at the surface layer of things but actually behind every successful person’s achievements, there is a lot that has been forked out behind the scenes, it’s the same for me.â€

 

 

With regards to his own career, Wu Yifan appears to be very well-though-out on this, he has a good understanding of what he has forked out, gained, and what he should withstand. “The private life of a public figure will definitely be impacted more (than a non-celebrity’s), I feel that this can’t be helped. When you choose to become a public figure, this is the (result of the) impact you receive, and you have to treasure the love and support given by these people.†Wu Yifan has some small regrets of his own, the 6 years from the time he was 18 to 24, his youth wasn’t similar to that of other young people, when others were out having a good time/partying to their fullest, he was practicing. “But actually that’s quite meaningful, it’s something of youthfulness (something that one does when they are young).†“Is it partying crazily or training that’s meaningful?†“Of course having a good time is meaningful, who doesn’t like to have fun.†Wu Yifan, who didn’t party like mad, forged a different life path with his hard work and sweat. But he added, “One has to have dreams, one has to have their own goals and motivation, if one merely keeps on having a good time/partying there would be no future.â€

 

If we look at him today, it is not hard for Wu Yifan who has received a great deal of attention to his extremely handsome looks, to be labeled as “an actor who relies on his popular faceâ€. To this, Wu Yifan did not avoid the question in the slightest bit and replied, “I’m actually rather envious of others, because they have received professional training and have definitely learnt how to act in their curriculum, so they definitely have their benefits. But I feel that everyone has their own personal experiences, perhaps when I was overseas in Korea, there were some things that I had which others didn’t. In comparison with some professional actors, I can only say that I’m not fully satisfied with how things are currently, I feel that I have to continue working hard, to get even better.â€

 

With regards to the future, Wu Yifan himself also has no idea what kind of actor he will be in ten years’ time, he said that he has no specific guidelines. “Life’s like that, it changes all the time, perhaps there are things that you’ve planned well today which can change tomorrow. That’s why I feel that I am a person who lives in the moment. Living in the present and not pondering too much about even tomorrow. I’m an easygoing person.†But not having specific guidelines does not mean having any goals. “I hope to be an actor who is recognized by others.†Everyone wishes to be recognized by others, and to gradually gain more recognition through his hard work is something very rewarding to Wu Yifan.

 

 

On the topic of filming his new reality show <Challengers Union>, Wu Yifan expressed that he enjoyed himself a lot and was very happy, as someone who really loves variety programs, he said, “I’m someone who loves to joke around,  even though it can’t be seen from my appearance, but on the inside I’m a silly guy.†He appears not to fully comprehend his popularity and thus, does not suppress his personality. He looks like a prince, so why doesn’t he just go on maintaining the image of a cold and aloof prince? “Do you have an idol image ("packagingâ€)? “What’s a packaging, can it be eaten?†He pretended to answer seriously.

 

Stephen Chow’s <King of Comedy> is one of Wu Yifan’s favorite movies, with regards to the movie he commented, “Don’t you feel that after watching it, even though it’s a comedy, it’s actually rather sad? It’s a very sad comedy, I really like these kind of comedies, including the soundtrack and all, it’s a great classic. I feel that my life is like that, even though I’m a person who jokes around a lot, but it’s with traces of sadness.†“What made you sad?†“I’m not sorrowful, I’m a rather optimistic person, despite how life has treated me cruelly, I’m still rather optimistic, I’m very happy.†Wu Yifan’s solemn and serious reply left us shocked. “Life has treated you cruelly?†He immediately let out a laugh, “I’m just joking with you, if you want to write it down, please remember to put quotation marks around this phrase.â€

 

 

In this ever-changing industry, as an “artiste†and “easygoing personâ€, Wu Yifan’s life philosophies are to “Not let myself worry too muchâ€, (because) “if a person cannot find peacefulness in his heart, it’s hard for him to balance out the stress from various aspects of life. So one has to have their own space, and not overthink. Of course this is just what I tell myself, it’s not directed at anyone.â€

 

When he’s not working, off-camera Wu Yifan is a quiet, optimistic young man who really loves nature, likes doing sports outdoors and loves reading. He constantly fills himself with positivity, and is a smart person who has his own pursuits yet is not stubborn and unrelenting. If all aspects of him were to be summed up together, Wu Yifan said, “I have a free soul/personality.†On the internet there are records of the meaning of his name given to him by his mother, “(I) gave him the name Wu Yifan, because I hoped that he would be an ordinary person, with an ordinary life, an ordinary job, and after that (have his own) family…†Today Wu Yifan is far from the definition of “ordinaryâ€, but he still has some certain and simple wishes like ordinary people, he really wishes to have a steady family, as long as he meets the right person, he would get married. He especially wishes to be a good husband and father in the future. He really wishes to have a daughter, if he has a daughter, he would be the best father in the world.

 

As an idol of a new generation, Wu Yifan possesses experience, insight and distinction which others do not have, befitting of the expectations society has of youth these days. His appearance is timely, and he knows this well too. The interview ended at Wu Yifan expressing his heartfelt desire to be a good father, after packing up my stationery and walking out of interview room I commented to a staff member I was converted from a casual fan to a die-hard fan, at this moment Wu Yifan who was changing his clothes overheard this and he pried aside the changing room curtain and happily asked, “For real?†– This, is Wu Yifan.
