(CNN) Debris found in the western Indian Ocean on Wednesday appears to be part of a Boeing 777, the same model as Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that disappeared in 2014, according to a source close to the investigation.

The source said there is a unique element to the Boeing 777's flaperon, a wing component, that Boeing observers believe they are seeing in photos.

The debris was found Wednesday off the coast of Reunion Island, a French department in the western Indian Ocean. It is being examined to determine whether it is connected to flight MH370, a member of the French air force in Reunion said Wednesday.

The debris was found off the coast of St. Andre, a community on the island, according to Adjutant Christian Retournat.

Boeing officials conducted an initial assessment of the debris using photographs. The source stressed the observations are preliminary.

Update: Guardian reports that the flaperon found off the island is most likely to be from a Boeing 777, confirmed by experts. You can follow the live update here: http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2015/jul/30/mh370-possible-breakthrough-debris-found-reunion-island. MH370 was a Boeing 777-200ER.

There has been signs of luggage found near where the flaperon debris was found as well. Hopefully this is a major breakthrough for the investigation and the officials can manage to find the remaining debris, blackbox and cockpit voice recorder as well.

Has it been said what's the cause of the crash?

Until now, not yet. Though the flaperon they found appears to be in one piece, I speculate it wasn't a sudden crash or anything.

Well according to the serial number 657BB, it matches with that of a 777. Confirmed. I don't think there has been any other aviation incidents in this area that involved a B777, it's almost certain at this point that it belongs to MH370.

That was the biggest mystery to me. That proves how big the earth is and how little we know about it.

Especially underwater. Thousands of miles of deep ocean. It's almost a fluke that the flaperon washed up on an inhabited island. Just seeing the pic of it sends chills down my spine.

Those poor people... even if we find the black box, will we ever know for sure if the pilot crashed into the sea on purpose? And, if so, why? I hope for closure on this for the sake of the families.

I know if it was pilot's fault or was it under hijack? I just hope it is not like that german wings case. That case was effed up.

Exactly. And I didn't follow the german wings case closely. Didn't they establish that the pilot was depressed and suicidal?

P.s.: Your dp is making me HONGRAY

I followed the case. Yes, he was having suicidal thoughts from before. He exhibited the act also. It seem the flight prior to the unfortunate flight he flew, he practised the rapid descent.

This is the chart.

I don't get why does he need to kill 100s other lives just to take his own. Such a satan!

I don't understand either. There are fathers who kill their families before killing themselves because they cannot conceive that their families could possibly 'carry on' after they themselves have gone. I cannot get over the selfishness of such an act. No one should be pushed to the point of suicide but don't drag down with you innocents who have a chance at life. That is murder.

This pilot, I think, must have had delusions of 'showing the world' his pain. Delusions of power, too, because he had these people's lives in his hands and he felt they were expendable to his own aims.
