Why do Japanese people tend to think that Asian foreigners are Chinese??

As you can see, I live in Tokyo. I don't mean to offend any Chinese people here, but it's fucking annoying whenever I can't understand anything or I have trouble explaining in Japanese, people either get some Chinese guy to interpret for me, or use Google Translate to translate to Chinese, or afterwards they say "xie xie" or "Zai jian" to me. It has happened to me countless times. I'm sure they are aware that there are a lot of Asian countries besides China.

I know it's just a small problem, but they could have asked me instead of automatically assuming that I'm Chinese

FYI I'm Vietnamese

Perhaps many tourists are Chinese? And the chance that a tourist is Chinese is prolly the highest because China's economy is booming and Chinese ppl take in one third of the world population.. so yeah. Idk though, I never been to Japan. :P

Edit: I mean not only tourists of course, also those who live there hehe

Oh yeah. Population boomed these few years hehe. Anyhow, China's population only (without those overseas) is already the biggest of all Asian countries, even the biggest of the world-- you get my point.

I'm also Vietnamese and I've had Korean people thinking I'm Chinese, Singaporean, or Hong Konger ever since I came to South Korea for study abroad because they get a lot of Chinese, Singaporean, and Hong Kong tourists. Heck, one of my professors here even kept constantly mistaking me for being from Hong Kong despite me having said I was from America! It's probably the same with Japan, too.

Chinese is spoken in China, Taiwan, and Singapore. That is a huge chunk of the Asian population, so they are probably just taking their best guess. It happens to white foreigners, too. Everyone assumes a white person speaks English, but I've run into many white tourists in Taiwan who only speak Russian or French.
