YOON DOOJOON

VG: Although we don’t know if ‘Let’s Eat’ season 3 will be out but I think we’re able to call this drama one of Yoon Doojoon’s signatures. Now, acting, it’s something you can do/be worthy of?
DJ: Rather than saying that, how shall I put this, in the past there was no time for me to find the fun in acting but this time round for the first time, I found acting interesting. Just image I act with some intention; but when that intention is accepted/felt by the viewers as it is, it is somewhat electrifying? There are times like that.

VG: But the acting in season 1 was really great.
DJ: That is why it’s so pressurising. There wasn’t anyone who said I had to keep it that way but I shouldered it by myself and there were many instances where I thought ‘if this fails, it’s my fault’. During the early stages of filming.

VG: Even so, Yoon Doojoon whom continued ‘Let’s Eat’ for two season is successful. I’m sure you already have the next project lined up?
DJ: Although thankfully there are scripts piling up, I’m firstly postponing all of them. I can’t do two things at once. My job is as a singer, I have greed in wanting to do my best as a BEAST member.  The album is coming out so for the time being, I’m focusing on BEAST’s promotions.

VG: What is BEAST to Yoon Doojoon?
DJ: To put it abstractly, it’s like home. During BEAST promotions, it’s like coming home, I’m comfortable. If I could be greedy, I want to work harder, I want to make the house bigger, complement with interior and decorate it coolly – that kind of intention?

VG: To be specific?
DJ: To constantly develop, for BEAST to be loved by more people on Earth.

VG: Which song in this album do you feel the most attachment to?
DJ: There’s a song called ‘Gotta Go to Work’. It’s sweet.

VG: Is it a song about a workaholic?
DJ: (laughs) No. I need to go to work but my lady would whine saying ‘don’t go to work, play with me’ – it’s that kind of song.

VG: Ah it’s a love song.
DJ: Yes, an extremely happy one.

VG: This morning, I saw an article with the headline ‘This summer, a tight match between the industry’s stars!
DJ: It’s a huge problem because we didn’t manage to practice a lot this time round. However, we’ll find a way.

VG: Oh, this composure? Is it due to the many years in the industry?
DJ: Using that term… I’m still just an 18 year old boy. Only my heart is still 18 (laughs).

LEE KIKWANG

VG: Everyone is busy on their own. In the midst of all that, you all have come together to record for the album, are there no episodes/stories for that?
KK: Yep, there’s none. It’s not the first or second time we’re doing this so everyone does it smoothly.

VG: I’m giving you time to show off and talk about your new album.
KK: It’s a title song that has a feel that has never been showed by BEAST all this while. It’s pretty much the first time (we’re doing something like this). It’s an album that suits the season.

VG: Song you would recommend?
KK: â€˜Suite Room’ and ‘Gotta Go to Work’. I like these best. If I could talk about the behind/background of this, ‘Suite Room’ was supposed to be the title song of my solo album.

VG: You would probably feel regretful about this right?
KK: It’s nothing like that but it has a different charm from when I’m singing it alone. I think it is also more significant being able to sing it with my members.

VG: So your solo album will be out soon too?
KK: Nope. There’s no promise like that. I still have a lot more to prepare.

VG: I heard you have also confirmed for a role in Mrs Cop.
KK: Firstly, I’m anticipating it and I am excited for it. Although I feel pressured because it’s been a while since I filmed for a drama, I’m preparing diligently. I’ll show a good side of me.

VG: That is such a routine/conventional answer (laughs).
KK:  Really? (laughs) The character isn’t like that. I’m the youngest out of the homicide detectives. The characters I’ve taken on all this while have been light and cute but it’s different this time round. I think I’ll be able to show serious acting, different from the ones I’ve been doing.

VG: You’re not a shiny polished pretty maknae (youngest) detective?
KK: Last week we finished our (script) reading and the director said rather than being someone like that, he/she would prefer (a character) that really has a detective feel. You’re curious right? It’ll be airing in early August.

VG: Kim Hee Ae will be appearing too right?
KK: We only had reading (of the script) but I could feel the difference in class. She’s really someone amazing.

VG: What is your attitude/mind-set about acting?
KK: When I’m acting, I don’t want to be idol Lee Kikwang but I want to be actor Lee Kikwang who makes it possible for you to focus on the story.

VG: What is the most important value in life?
KK: Health and happiness. Lately I’ve realised that health is very important.

VG: Those are words the elderly would say.
KK: This year, I felt it even more keenly. Last year I was hurt/injured quite a bit. I started eating tonic, vitamins and things like that.

VG: Where were you hurt/injured?
KK: Last year we went to Japan for promotions and I had severe hypothermia. I realised then that by being healthy that’s how you can be happy. Eating the good/healthy and delicious things, exercising and more so than anything else, I’m working on leading a well regulated life.

VG: That’s right. Even the things that makes you happy is secondary to health.
KK: Yes, when you’re healthy you can do anything.

YONG JUNHYUNG

VG: You’re always creating songs, this time round how many songs did you write?
JH: All except for one.

VG: There isn’t any other member who would be able to talk about the album better (than you).
JH: The pains (in creating this album) were really severe.

VG: Why?
JH: All the albums we’ve done up till now were sad right. They were about men who were really sad; in ’12:30’ we showed the almost pathetic end (of the relationship).

VG: This time round too, the sadness will be rock bottom?
JH: Nope. In any case, it’s summer so I/we thought that we shouldn’t be crying to that extent.

VG: In that case, would it be a slightly happier concept?
JH: However, the fans are expecting ‘sad emotions’ from us and we can’t abandon them (their expectations). So this summer we thought of ‘crying excitedly’.

VG:  Till the end, you’re not able to abandon ‘crying’.
JH: I think that sad emotions is the emotion people can most identify with. The things that I’m able to express with ease are also in that direction. For two months, I was thinking about the title track and I took out the track that I made right at the start and polished that one up. This album is stories about people who have gotten hurt and have become tired. If in the past they’ve cried together, this time it’s, ‘I’m so hurt so I don’t even want to think of anything for today. I’m going to completely get ruined! Whether tomorrow comes or not, I don’t care. For today I’m going to escape from all my worries and concern.†Something like that?

VG: Now that you’ve mentioned that, I understand ‘crying excitedly’.
JH: Therefore overall when you listen to the songs, the tracks are upbeat. The sound is upbeat and strong but its charm factor is the content takes the same context of ‘you finally come to this condition.’ I still keep the keyword ‘pitiful’ alive (laughs).

VG: Apart from composing, are you interested in other areas? The creative side.
JH: I have a lot of interest in illustrations and artwork, designs that are symbolic but I don’t think of being specialised in it. I don’t think I have the capacity to do things to that stage, even as it is now I’m already have a lot going on.

VG: ‘Creative torment’, this is something that’s really hard, how do you release it?
JH: I don’t do anything to release it but there are moments when I think I should work on letting it go on its own. When I work on the album and it is out, there are times when I feel that the wreckage that I’ve not been able to write is still left (in me). It’s hard to get rid of that. I keep looking (exhibitions/displays), I keep reading (books). As a creator, it’s great to always have a new mind-set but there will always be a limit. If I find that it’s been too cliché, I will stop and think of it abstractly. If I’m not able to create new things any more, there is no longer a purpose for me to keep writing songs.

VG: The style for the new song will be changing, what about the person himself? Are there changes?
JH: Well, I’m getting older. My thoughts have become a little more mature and I think I now know what is truly important.

YANG YOSEOB

VG: I hear a lot about you from the musical side.
YS: Thankfully.

VG: What is Yang Yoseob’s charm on the musical stage?
YS: I hear quite a bit that people like seeing glimpse of myself in the characters I play.

VG: What about you? Of yourself as a musical actor.
YS: It’s hard, at first. When I first started, I stood on Sejong Center’s stage in Gwanghwamun Sonata and looking back on it, it was really something bold, and I think it’s really something amazing.

VG: BEAST is a group in which individual activities are anticipated too; will you continue doing musicals in the future?
YS: Of course I’d love to continue meeting people through musicals and if there’s an opportunity, I’d like to release another solo album.

VG: What is your personal assessment on this upcoming album?
YS: After recording and hearing it for the first time, I felt ‘It’s like they’re all title songs’.

VG: So you’re saying the finishing is high (quality) too?
YS: Junhyungie said it like that too. He made the other songs with the thought of making all of them worthy of being a title song.

VG: The song that you personally like?
YS: â€˜Suite Room’ is a song style that I’ve always liked, and ‘Gotta Go to Work’ is a song that many people can identify with. These two songs keep being stuck with me.

VG: We’ll continue talking about you personally. Would last year and this year be a little different?
YS: Last year, I was like a marathon athlete, I kept running (being busy). I was constantly working but I learnt a lot and I gained a lot.  Compared to last year, this year I had some free time but it’s a situation where whenever we have to run, we need to run at full speed.

VG: Which one is better?
YS: There are pros and cons for each but personally I like being the marathon runner more. Continuously steadily doing something, continuously steadily developing. I think I’m more inclined towards that.

VG: Whenever I see you, you always have a baby face. Preservative baby face (laughs).
YS: I live on that. Thank you (laughs).

VG: We would always want to just be a boy at when the time comes, we’ll need to be a man right. What kind of man do you want to become?
YS: I want to be a man where I’m warm to people but strict on myself.

JANG HYUNSEUNG

VG: What is your role in this album?
HS: I didn’t participate in any song writing or composing so.. What is my role? I’m in charge of the charisma in the team (laughs).

VG: A strong blow?
HS: I’m working on expressing that to the best I can in my parts.

VG: Parts you were concerned about with regards to fashion or make up?
HS: As comeback commemoration (?) I’ve attempted blonde hair!

VG: How have you been in the meanwhile?
HS: I’ve been busy preparing my solo album.

VG: And the result?
HS: I’m satisfied. The composition and colour of the first album with my name wasn’t bad.

VG: You must be really satisfied.
HS: I really tried my best. There wasn’t really another time where I lived as earnestly as that (time). Above everything else, the biggest outcome of this is me gaining confidence in being able to do better should there be another album.

VG: Through your solo album, what did you want to show the most?
HS: Hip Hop & R&B. It’s a colour I’ve been seeking and persisting on since a long time ago. Being able to move towards the direction I’ve been seeking, it is a satisfying album.

VG: Looking at BEAST’s new album concept, it’s between boys and men. Which side are you closer to?
HS: I’m a delinquent (boy) (laughs). Something like ‘bad boy’. The BEAST members are really nice so I have to balance it out.

VG: Could you define boys and men?
HS: For boys, it’s definitely causal and young. For men, it feels like they need to put on suits. I think I’m still a boy. For example if we’re talking about magazines, more than ‘GQ’ or ‘Esquire’, I’m more of ‘Dazed and Confused’? Ah, am I by chance saying odd remarks?

VG: What do you mean?
HS: Ah, the people at GQ might not like it.

VG: It’s okay, they’ll understand (laughs). Even as a boy, as year passes, you’ll grow older. Has your ideal type changed?
HS: Ever since I was young, I’ve liked noonas (older girls). I completely did not see same-age girls or girls younger than me as an ideal type. In my mind, noonas are those in their mid-20s? But now I’m already 27. Now that I’m here, I understand. It’s not that noonas are my ideal type but more like ladies in their mid-20s.

VG: Are there any plans for you after BEAST’s promos?
HS: Well. There’s no concrete plans yet.

VG: In the future, how do you want to age?
HS: Even as I grow older, I’d like it if I’m as I am now. The reason I prefer being a boy is that I don’t ever want to lose the feeling of being young. No matter what I do, how matter how old I am.

SON DONGWOON

VG: I saw the article. Because of Son Dongwoon, Japan became a commotion. Just until some time back, you were still in Japan right?
DW: Yes. I released a solo album in Japan, and I did showcases and performances. I received more love than I expected.

VG: Surely, you look a little more ‘up’. Is it because you look like you have more confidence now?
DW: Thank you. I’m happy.

VG: Are you satisfied with your solo album?
DW: Rather than being satisfied, I think my greed was appeased a little. There is a bright dance track. There is also a track that has some rock elements. A balance of R&B and ballad songs were included too.

VG: You attempted various genres. Like a comprehensive gift set.
DW: It was an album that was created with my all. 3 months before the release, I prepared for it bit by bit.

VG: It coincides with BEAST’s promotions and personally you would be very busy; seems like a fruitful summer.
DW: Yes, it is an extremely fruitful summer to me.

VG: BEAST doesn’t leave anyone behind and everyone is busy working hard on their own personal schedules/promotions. It’s really nice to see.
DW: After BEAST promotions end, about one or two months from that, there will probably be another good news.

VG: What is it?
DW: Please wait for it till then (laughs).

VG: Is this some kind of prediction?
DW: Yes. Actually it’s nothing much but doing it like this, wouldn’t the anticipation increase? Please write it as ‘Please wait for Dongwoonie’s (in) October or November’.

VG: Okay, I’ll write it as much as I’m anticipating it (laughs).
DW: I didn’t have much personal activities so far. However, I don’t rest and I spent time doing things that is an investment for myself. Things like picking up Japanese and singing lessons. I think of this year as the result of all that time (I spent).

VG: For men, confidence is their weapon isn’t it. That’s probably why you look even more good looking as compared to the past.
DW: I lost a lot of weight. When I went to Japan, I was sick a lot. I don’t know if it’s because of that, or if it’s because of my exercise but I lost 3-4kg. Also previously I gave off a feel of being young a lot but now more than a boy, I’m a young man.

VG: You also seem more matured. Do you feel it?
DW: A little. When I look at my photos.

VG: The word that is most important to you in your life right now?
DW: ë¹„. 스. 트. (BEAST)

VG: Why?
DW: I felt it a lot especially when I did my solo promotions. I was really worried because it was my first album and it would be released in a foreign land but I was able to break out from the egg easily with BEAST and BEAST’s fans in the background.

VG: It can be a sprout and a reliable background.
DW: It’ll be great if the solo promotions I do could help out my background (BEAST) even just a little.
