hipployta 2,266
Interview: Tencent Translation: Yifaniqi (IThank the translator, Yifaniqi, if you have a chance! I skimmed the interview to correctly place the photos in the translation so if they are misplaced blame my poor Chinese reading skills.) On December 17, 2014 in the restaurant located at the top floor of Chengdu’s St. Regis Hotel, everyone was chatting amongst themselves when a handsome big boy with a tall statue walked in. “I’m sorry, the plane was late, I’m sorry to have everyone wait.†The boy folded his hands together as he kept apologizing, and he even made a 90 degree bow after his apology. The humble and polite boy is called Kris Wu, and this was the first encounter between him and Tencent Fashion. At that time, when we asked how he would describe a stylish guy, he said the word, “handsome.†expressed everything. Around half a year later (June 26, 2015) when Tencent Fashion and Kris Wu met again in Paris, we asked the same question and he still answered with the word “handsomeâ€. “This term is somewhat general and broad, but in the end, if you think he’s handsome, then he’s a stylish guy. Why be so complicated, it’s just a simple point.†Then, today we will begin the story with the word “handsomeâ€. Even in France, there would be groups of fans surrounding the hotel where Kris Wu stayed. They held up their professional camera equipment, and you won’t even need to see, but hear the constant shuttering sound to know the whereabouts of the protagonist. Inside the car ride from the W Hotel to the filming scene, Kris sat quietly in the innermost seat with his parted hair and fair skin that gave an indifferent expression. After a minute, the manager gave a brief introduction and Kris said, “I saw you in Chengdu before! I remembered!†The trip to Paris with Tencent Fashion and Kris Wu started with these eight words (I can’t believe it also came out to be eight words when I translated it LOL) After getting familiar with each other, you won’t be able to find a trace of indifference on his face. “I’m the type that warms up slowly, people who I’m close with know that I’m a self-mocking king.†From people’s past thoughts of “Prince Charmingâ€, they thought that those men wanted to display their “macho†side, wanting to give the other person a sense of security and wanting to satisfy their need to conquer. In this era where the face is everything, the men who were crowned the title, “flower boy†or “fresh meat†would have countless wolves and beasts lurking around. That would be defining your “handsome†initial impression, with their eyes, looking just at the surface. In this circle, countless men and women have used external devices or modification practices to enhance their “face valueâ€. From here, you have to say that face appearance is very important! For this May’s Met Ball, Kris Wu who wore Givenchy’s white suit and black pants with his hair slicked back, made many girls screamed. This type of flower boy was the ideal prince for countless women, with his face and style. “Prince is a superficial thing, and within time, it will slowly change, and there will be a new prince. It’s a realistic problem, I pay more attention on what’s inside, what can truly be memorable for people in the long run, men need to be like red wine!†For Kris Wu, the label “fresh meat†and “little male god†would follow behind him, and it all comes down to his face. As he listened to the questions asked by Tencent Fashion, Kris would answer back calmly, with his eyebrows slightly wrinkled before reverting back to his calm posture. “I don’t have much thought about it, I think it’s pretty superficial, it’s not my style. What’s most important is your inner self.†Within two minutes, Kris Wu mentioned about the importance of inner self twice. Tencent Fashion and Kris Wu sat face to face talking to each on a long-shaped sofa and Tencent quietly observed him, great skin, white and clear that you would be able to see his capillaries. He always loved to gently brush his hair away, revealing the eye-catching “FAN†tattoo below his ear. Kris had a lot of accessories on him: cross-shaped earrings, stacked bracelets, and around four to five rings. “I’m a person who pays more attention to details, like hats and glasses. I have a lot of hats at home and I wouldn’t be able to wear all of them. Sometimes I wish I have three heads. But because I like it, it’s like I’m collecting them, whatever type there is, I’ll have it. If you’re missing any type of hat, you can probably find them here.†He laughed after saying that. “My biggest hobby is collecting clothes, there are many that I may not be able to wear, so I’ll just keep them where I like them to be. If there’s nothing to do, I’ll go look at them, feeling very happy. A lot of people would ask me what I’m missing, there isn’t much that I have a few of, I have a lot.†Facing the sofa was a large mirror and Kris Wu would look at his reflection from time to time. “I can go see a different side of Kris Wu from the mirror.†“Then are you a narcissist?†He narrowed his eyebrows slightly and adjusted his rings on his fingers. “It’s like this, there are differences of how one looks at the mirror. There are two types of people, one type uses the mirror or their phone to look at their face, and the other type uses the mirror to see their outfits, I’m that type. After accessorizing with the right things, it doesn’t matter if the hairstyle or the hat is plain, because that’s the total look. Sometimes, you can’t be too concerned with every detail. You win some, you lose some. If you look good in only particular area, then the whole look won’t have a right feel to it. As we continued to chat, a cellphone suddenly rang. He took his phone out and gently swiped the screen. “Sorry, let’s continue!†“Are you able to leave your cell phone?†Tencent Fashion asked him straightforwardly. “I’m pretty much a phone addict, I will go look at it from time to time, and I won’t feel comfortable if my phone is not with me. This is the Internet era, back then, the only mobile game you can play was Snake. Now you can go online, play different types of games, and even go microblogging. It changed the whole era, and for me, I can’t be inseparable from it.†On his birthday, Kris Wu made a post on his Weibo and had over 10 million comments and reposts. When he joined Guo Jing Ming’s “L.O.R.Dâ€, Guo Jing Ming’s post also got at least 2 million reposts. Now, whatever he does will create a topic on social media, his appearance have already become a phenomenon. Do you think that Kris Wu would obediently live in this ideal world and become an idol that appealed to the mass public? Absolutely not, he likes freshness and will appear before the public with a strange look. He will mock himself on social media, he don’t play by the rules, and you will not be able to know what he will do next. “Gossip is a fearful thing!†“I’m a person who particularly likes to try out new things, even towards fashion. My attitude and passion towards it and with what I like is to make myself happy, I don’t think too much about it. I appreciate all the voices made by the public, it’s normal to have good and bad comments. I’m not the type of person that particularly cares about the gain or the loss.†In this circle, Kris Wu possessed what most of his peers missed which is being calm and collected. For him, he’s been trying hard to become and tough and calm person. Interview time! T: Tencent Fashion K: Kris Wu T: Everytime you arrive to the airport, your look would carry some sort of a theme. Are they specially prepared or it’s just usual careful detailing? K: It mainly depends on the feel that time. I wouldn’t give too much thought into it, basically it depends on the feel. T: Airport looks are where most people can see you, would you care more on the details? The accessories or the clothing? K: I would focus more on the details such as hats, accessories, and glasses. T: Then you bought a lot of accessories for yourself huh? K: A lot, especially hats. They come in boxes. T: You have a lot of five-pointed stars on your body, and Givenchy also have a lot of five-pointed stars as an element. Your earrings are also like stars, how do you feel about the star design? K: I wouldn’t say that I’m particularly fond of them, I would used them occasionally to accessorize. I just felt that I should try them out. T: Awhile ago, a netizen captured a photo of you in an airport and your outfit was a see-through. Your body is pretty good, do you usually work out? K: It’s okay, I mainly played basketball, I don’t particularly work out. T: Actually a lot of things for you is based on feelings. K: I’m a pretty casual person, I wouldn’t particularly care much about it. It’s not like being sloppy or not caring about details, but I go with a relaxed attitude. However, there are some things that you need to be serious and put your efforts into. This is an attitude that one needs, being relaxed as they’re able to accomplish their tasks at the same time. T: I asked you before what was your definition of a stylish guy and you answered, “handsomeâ€. Do you still think that way? K: (Laughs) It’s still handsome. That time, I didn’t put into much thought into it and just said handsome. The term stylish guy is too broad, there can be many definitions. Some people might think that stylish guys have to have muscles. But since I’m relatively thin, it’s pretty hard to define. My reply of “handsome†is pretty general, but I think that if you think he’s handsome, then he’s a stylish guy. T: You have the label “fresh meat†and “little male god†on you and they’re based on face, how do you feel about that? K: I don’t have much thought about it, I think it’s pretty superficial, it’s not my style. What’s most important is your inner self. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with self-mocking and funny stuff. T: I see that on both yours and Li Yifeng’s Weibo, you two have words written on your backs. Do you usually make fun of each other like that? K: We are friends, we’re pretty casual with each other. T: Your debut film, “Somewhere Only We Knowâ€, earned nearly 300 million in box office sales, for someone who earned this much sales on their debut film, how do you feel about this? For your next film, “L.O.R.Dâ€, it seemed like you’ll have a different visual image. K: I always wanted to take up different types of roles, that’s the fun part of being an actor. The box office sales of my debut film being in the millions is not important to me. That is what the movie investors are focused on, and not for me to pay attention to. What an actor should pay attention to is whether their work is good, if they’re satisfied with their acting, and how others feel about their role. The most unreliable thing is using the box office sales to judge the quality of the film. T: You are willing to try something new like your role for your next film, are you a type of person who likes this feeling of freshness? K: Like what I said earlier, what’s fun about being an actor is that you can be in different roles, experiencing a different life, so I would like to continue to accept new roles. T: How does it feel returning to campus when filming “So Young 2â€? How did you feel when you wore the school uniforms? K: Pretty good, really good. I actually never wore those types of school uniforms when I was a child, those uniforms are pretty trendy. When I was little, I wore the classic blue and green uniforms. I kind of missed it, and since everyone had that experience, I want to experience high school life once again. T: It’s your first time in Paris, have you thought of playing or sightseeing? K: Yes, you can’t leave out Paris shopping and visiting classic sites such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. I feel that Europe gives off a relaxing feeling. T: Do you like to travel? K: I especially like to travel, I even wanted to do backpacking. But because I don’t have the time now, so coming to Paris is like having a mini vacation. T: You just graced the cover of Vogue, and it’s a first for male stars, being on China’s most popular magazine. Tell us your feelings about it. K: At that moment, I was very happy, I can’t find the words to describe it. When I heard the news about it, my God, I was extremely grateful. I liked to thank all the support I received from Vogue and those who believe in me. To me, this is not a very grand thing, but a great endeavor, which made me become more motivated. Because I love fashion and this was the greatest recognition I received. All these years of shopping and buying clothes, my money have not gone to waste. I also wish that we will continue with our cooperation and the road of fashion will become wider. T: On your first time attending the Met Ball, you showed up with a white suit and black trousers. A lot of people said you looked like Prince Charming, do you like others calling you “Prince Charming†or “Funny Xâ€? K: Probably more towards the latter. Prince is a superficial thing, and within time, it will slowly change, and there will be a new prince. It’s a realistic problem, I pay more attention on what’s inside, what can truly be memorable for people in the long run, men need to be like red wine! T: You posted a picture on Weibo, stirring up a heated debate about long legs with the entire sofa filled with legs, tell me what this is about. K: At that time, I was shooting for a commercial. After I’m done, I said let’s go play by the water, and this ship have a very comfortable sofa, and it’s long. So I rested on the sofa and took a picture, didn’t think too much about it. Recently, I like to joke around, grabbing the sofa or basement and whatnot. T: Can you normally leave Weibo or your phone? K: I’m pretty much a phone addict. T: Do you lose a sense of security if your phone runs out of battery? K: I’ll go find a charger! T: Then what happens if you can’t find it? K: Then I would feel pretty uncomfortable. This is the Internet era, back then, the only mobile game you can play was Snake. Now you can go online, play different types of games, and even go microblogging. It changed the whole era, and for me, I can’t be inseparable from it. T: On your every post, the amount of reposts and comments are…scary. Will you read the comments? Will you care about the thoughts and comments that the media and netizens have of you? K: I will definitely listen to all the voices, but caring or not caring, whether or not they affected me or not is another matter. I will accept all the voices and all of their thoughts of me. I think it’s a normal thing, everyone has something that they like, it’s the most basic thing. I’m not the type of person who particularly cares about the gain or loss. T: Your mentality is pretty good. K: It’s alright. T: Your ability to self resolve is pretty strong. K: I’ve been working hard to become a tough and calm person. T: People said a woman’s wardrobe will always be missing a piece of clothing, and a lot of times, it’s also like that for men. What do you have the most of in your closet? What do you have the least of? K: The most is…hats. I have a lot of clothes, a lot, and I also like them. My biggest hobby is collecting clothes, there are many that I may not be able to wear, so I’ll just keep them where I like them to be. If there’s nothing to do, I’ll go look at them, feeling very happy. A lot of people would ask me what I’m missing, there isn’t much that I have a few of, I have a lot. T: Not a lot of people would dare to try the middle parted hairstyle that you have, because it will expose a lot ugly things. Is it because you like to try out new things or because people think that your face value is so high that you shouldn’t worry about it? K: I’m an idol who don’t have an idol baggage, I don’t even know if I’m an idol myself. I just don’t think much about it.

everypart 11,409
An alternate translation - http://wuyifankris.com/post/124492574464/wu-yi-fan-x-tencent-fashion-interview-paris-mens Favorite bits: “I’m the type who takes a while to warm up, those who know me know that I’m the king of self-mockery.†Wu Yi Fan’s seat faces the large mirror placed just opposite of that sofa, and every now and then he would subtly glance at his reflection. “I’m looking at various states of Wu Yi Fan in the mirror.†“Are you a narcissist?†He furrowed his eyebrows like before, and fiddled with the rings on his fingers before replying, “Actually it’s just like this, there are different reasons behind the act of looking in the mirror. Two types of people exist - one type uses their phone as a mirror thus only looking at their face, and the other type looks at themselves as a whole, I’m the kind of person who looks at the reflection of my whole body to coordinate my outfits. When everything compliments nicely, even then when your hairstyle or hat looks ordinary it won’t matter much, because it’s the “total look†that counts and at times you can’t focus too much on every single detail. You have to give and take, if you’re too perfect in one aspect, on the whole it may look a little off.†You may think that (with such popularity) Wu Yi Fan is the kind of idol who would merely doing things just to appeal to the masses and fit their ideals. However that is completely not the case. He’s someone who likes new things, making public appearances in seemingly strange looks and posting Weibo posts making fun of himself. He doesn’t adhere to common norms, and you will never be able to guess what he’s up to the next moment. So there are many things which you do because you’re feeling it at the moment? Yeah, I’m an easygoing person, I’m not that particular. It’s not that I’m sloppy and don’t pay attention to details, but rather it’s a laid back attitude. However there are some things which require your utmost focus. It is essential for one to be able to relax and also complete their work well. “When I replied “handsome†it was something more general, if you think a guy is handsome, he is.†You’ve been hailed as “Fresh-faced and handsome†as well as “Male Godâ€, these titles all have to do with your good-looking face, what do you have to say about the value of appearances? I don’t have much to say, I feel that it’s all rather superficial, it’s not my style. The most important part of a person is their inner qualities. For your first movie <Somewhere Only We Know>, box office was close to 300 million, how do you feel receiving such results for your first movie? Next up you have <Jue Ji> which differs in style and look. I’ve always wanted to accept different roles, which can only fulfill the joy of being an actor. I feel that no matter what the amount of box office for my first work is, that should matter the least, ticket sales are something that investors pay attention to and it’s not something I keep track of. An actor ought to pay attention to the quality of work, whether he is satisfied with his performance, listen to comments on his performance of his character. The most baseless thing would be to use box office sales as a means of evaluating of whether the movie was good or bad. The first time you attended the Met Ball, you wore a white suit jacket and black pants. Many people said that you looked like a “Prince Charmingâ€. Do you like it when others dub you as such, or would you prefer “Silly Guyâ€? I’d much more prefer the latter, the “Prince Charming†title is merely superficial, and as time goes by things will change, there will be newer “Prince Charmingâ€s, it’s the truth of reality. Thus I place more importance on inner qualities, stuff which are truly memorable and lasting. Men ought to be like wine. The amount of reposts, comments and likes on each of your weibo posts is rather…terrifyingly high, will you read the comments? Will you be affected by netizens and the media’s comments and opinions of you? I will definitely read the comments, but whether I care about them or get affected by them is another thing. I will accept all opinions, everyone is bound to give different evaluations of me, it’s a very normal thing as everyone has their own preferences. I’m not someone who cares too much about gains and losses.
