Do you consider someone a bad singer if they don't sing well live?

Meaning, they sound great in the studio, but on stage, they aren't so stellar...

For example, we all know Usher and Cunt Brown can impress

But if this performance is the "best version" I don't think I want to see the others

A more extreme example

I kinda didn't wanna use Mariah because I feel like I pick on her a lot but oh well. She's the type to put literally everything she has in the studio and not have anything left for live performances.

Studio

Live (skip to 3:17, she sounds like that in some parts because she didn't realize that no one turned off her mic when it was time for her to lip the belts and whistles)

Miguel is a mess himself but he wasn't the worst part of this performance so I'll let him slide today

Isn't that the ONLY way to judge a good singer? I mean, with editing like autotune and voice layering, anyone can sound good in the studio.

Well for people like Chris Brown and Mariah, they do belts and runs in the studio that a Taylor Swift or Jay Park would never be able to do, even in the studio. So they have some type of talent. They just are less capable of showing it live. That's my dilemma with it.

Yes. Also mariah sounded perfect live in her first decade. Her prime is what matters. Not when she's 45 with a worn out voice and vocal nodules.

Her prime isn't relevant to the thread.

if they're dancing, i dont base a solid opinion on it, and with kpop groups, if the member singing that sounds bad is supposed to be a rapper, i usually let it slide. if they suck while they're sitting down then they're just a bad singer.

also, i try not to form an opinion on 1 performance, i try to see multiple performances of a couple songs.

Yeah. You can heavily process a song in the studio and add reverb to make the tone sound thicker or you can fix the pitch etc.  You can use multiple different takes to make someone sound good. Live performances are a much better example of someones singing ability.

Depends. A singer who doesn't sing well live for one performance doesn't mean they're bad, especially if their vocal conditions aren't healthy. When you consider that singers, especially Kpop singers, have to constantly sing, that can take a toll on their voices if they aren't allowed vocal rest.
