Do you think male x male shipping is homophobic?

i encountered some tumblr confession and first was like wtf? but then i thought about it. it is really an equivalent of lesbians to straight men: straight women find male/male pairing to be arousing but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are LGBT-friendly or even tolerant. i still wouldn't call it homophobic though.

found this confession

no. It's how you treat/view homosexuality. If you ship, but view them as equals and human beings you're not homophobic. Now if they ship, but are grossed out at the real possibility of somebody being gay or they treat somebody who is homosexual badly, they are homophobic.

I think it is when they force one of the men to be the "woman" in the relationship.

it happens quite often really, when hetero dynamic is forced on male/male or female/female relationship. MPREG is still a nightmare for me.

those fans who ship such stuff without having even a small belief that one of them might be gay is stupid, and could be homophobic

But even then, they are not homophobic because they ship but because they are grossed out by real homosexual relationships.

This, basically. I don't think it's homophobic to 'ship' two people of the same sex, but the way it's done can definitely be. The worst thing is when the shippers try to prove someone is gay/lesbian, which is only done to fulfill their fantasy, by using outdated stereotypes ('doesn't cross her legs!!!so manly!!!for sure a lesbian!!!').

...no? I don't mind shippers assuming their idols are gay, I mind why/how they do it. Like I said, using stereotypes and especially relating homosexuality to perceived feminity/masculinity.

The act of shipping a same sex couple is not homophobic, the problem is the behavior of the shippers. Most of the shippers are very heteronormative, and they also abuse the stereotypes, but I wouldn't call them homophobic, they're just... ignorant. It's not hard to understand why a bunch of straight girls end up being heteronormative. And of course, unfortunately, there are homophobic shippers. I've seen many girls fangirling over gay couples but being grossed out by lesbian couples, as I've seen shippers of lesbian couples using "gay" to offend a man.

Thank you! Basically what I was saying it isn't the fics that are in the wrong but some hypocritical shippers who would cum at a yaoi fic but be on the next trainn to protest against gay rights irl
