MS CEO Steve Ballmer retirement within 12 months:

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 23, 2013 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer has decided to retire as CEO within the next 12 months, upon the completion of a process to choose his successor. In the meantime, Ballmer will continue as CEO and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most.

Rumblings about MS investors not satisfied with the Xbox venture and wants the entire division gone/sold:

A report by BizJournals claims that ValueAct, a $2 billion Microsoft investor with a 1% stake in the company, is seeking to achieve some major changes at Microsoft. Analyst Rick Sherlund claims that big changes are going to take place very soon as other shareholders support the decision to get rid of Steve Ballmer in addition to the investment group ValueAct. According to the report ValueAct are seeking to replace Steve Ballmer because his strategy “inspires little confidenceâ€.

Apparently Microsoft has no choice but to give ValueAct a board seat otherwise they might launch a “public war†on Steve Ballmer and Microsoft that could end with serious turmoil at the company.

“A decision by the board at Microsoft to offer a nomination for a board seat could keep the activist agenda behind closed doors and take longer for shareholders to see potential benefitsâ€

Furthermore it is believed they might target the Xbox division and try and get rid of it altogether. This would allow Microsoft to focus on other products and mainly Windows.

“Xbox is cool, but by our estimates Microsoft has not made money at thisâ€

Megaton?

idk that much about their finances but i thought their Xbox section is profitable. I think it's their tablets and Windows 8 that's losing money for them right now, but not really sure. it doesn't make any sense to cut out the Xbox from Microsoft.

The Xbox One will be fine. I don't see any problem with the Xbox One anymore, they've made the right changes now. Giving away Fifa for free with every system in europe is huge also.

getting rid of the Xbox would be complete suicide for Microsoft and would only benefit Sony in recapturing their throne with only Nintendo to compete with

I doubt the Xbox division is MS' lifeline...it's probably insignificant when looking at the whole of the company.

Errr xbox division rakes in money with Live and what not. It's like their only non failed consumer electronics ventures.

MS lost billions with the OG Xbox, and still haven't recovered those losses.

I can't say I'm surprised. They have been cutting their losses in other fronts, like planning on shutting down Games for Windows Live.

They should just stop acting so paranoid about piracy and focus on releasing good products that people will want to spend money on. Quitting altogether just shows they can't do that.

OG xbox was a result of terrible deals with parts suppliers, namely Nvidia, Intel and the hard drive vendors. They were at others mercy for pricing and die shrinks.

After 06-07 (with the the 2 Billion set aside because of RROD and R&D) I believe they have been profitable the last 5-6 years. Also managed to gain a lot of mindshare especially in the US and UK.

misleading, this is from one investor, and there is no way ms will get rid of xbox division right now, its starting to turn a profit and they will be selling xbox one with few to zero loss. anyone thinking getting rid of xbox divison is a good thing, are complete and utter morons sony manoplizing that hardcore market will hurt everyone.

PC players have been bemoaning the consolization of games for years, but I think the big-three rivalry has helped the industry as a whole, including the PC scene. Given that the best PC RPGs of the last decade have strong ties to Xbox, it would be a shame to see it go -- the Xbox One fail notwithstanding.

Lol good luck with that. Shutting down the Xbox division would be suicide.

Where is this "MS would go under without the Xbox" narrative coming from?

How do you know this?

A monopoly is not good, I agree. But there's still Nintendo, and Amazon and Steam are looking to break in to the market. The Xbox's exit would be the perfect opportunity.

and i thought they're the most profitable division from microsoft cause they get money alone from xbox live :._.:

No.

In fact, after the Xbone disaster, this misconception of Xbox=MS=Xbox makes it even more plausible the Board and shareholders are supporting ValueAct's agenda of getting rid of the Xbox division along with all other failed hardware ventures.

Disaster?

Yeah, because the console is already out and we have seen sales figures. Also, it's only one person calling for the Xbox to be killed off.

No one is saying they would go under, but losing that would be crazy. I don't think anyone believes that MS would go under because of it. The Xbox has been profitable for years, I don't know where people are getting that MS has been losing money off it.

I welcome the Xbox divison being eliminated, Xbox fanboys will neg me but the Xbox 360 was a horribly desgined system both physically and internally. Has everyone forgotten the major heating and RROD issues in the beginning? Not to mention, it still uses a freaking disc tray.... srsly? What is this 2004? Microsoft should stick to software, its what they are good at. Going into hardware was a bad decision on their part.

I will admit though the new 360 model is snazzy looking.

this post makes you look like a fanboy yourself.

the 360 is great. I have some problems with it but it's still a good console overall. Ps3 had the YLOD and the hacking. All systems have had their problems, at least they fixed the RROD. What does it matter if it uses a disc tray if it reads the game?

I do prefer my ps3 over my 360 but i'm not going to bash the console because there's not much to bash on. I will bash microsoft for not caring about games enough to make any exclusives though or the UI or not being able to use netflix on silver, but that's a different discussion.
