Full disclosure: I haven't seen 10 yet, but I've picked up little bits from other comments.

It's funny, because I have the opposite impression as you. I thought that Sunwoo started off by falling in love with Soonae...even though he says he might have liked Bongsun all along, we never got to see that! Up until Soonae possessed her, all we saw for Sunwoo/Bongsun was him being stern with her. Of course, he liked her just fine in that middle period when she wasn't possessed (their kiss, confessions, etc) but then we got back to Soonae. It's very confusing...even though they have conflicting personalities, it's not distinct who he actually likes.

It's all frustrating and I think we're missing out on a really sweet and straightforward romance between Sunwoo and Bongsun. Fingers crossed that the writing gets cleaner in the coming episodes, we still have a little way to go!

I think it's just that it's unclear to him when exactly did those feelings start, whether they were always there and Soonae just pushed them up or it really did start when when Soonae possessed Bongsun. He did say himself that he liked the neutral Bongsun the most. But now with these two episodes I don't even know anymore. It's a sign of bad writing when you don't make this kind of stuff clear.

Interestingly, I see it differently from you two. I see it as Sunwoo is falling in love with the real Bongsun. So what do I mean by the real Bongsun?

Before Soonae possessed Bongsun, Bongsun never had a chance with Sunwoo at all. She might be interested in Sunwoo, but being bothering by the ghosts all the time, she creates this "apologetic" Bongsun that are perceived by Sunwoo in the beginning. If things keep going that way, Bongsun will eventually drift away from Sunwoo.

After Soonae comes into the picture, she introduces an "Soonae" Bongsun that got Sunwoo's attention. However, he has never really been interested in this "Soonae" Bongsun. You guys see how he kept running ways from her. What Soonae did was giving Bongsun a chance to return to her true self and having moments with Sunwoo. Likewise, Soonae allows Sunwoo to finally get to see the real Bongsun. Sunwoo said it himself, he neither favors the "apologetic" Bongsun nor the "Soonae" Bongsun. He prefers the neutral Bongsun right? The real Bongsun!

No, the thing is I completely agree with you and I thought the same up until these last two episodes (9 and 10). It was a big mistake to have Soonae fall in love with Sunwoo and then make her spend most of the time with him. Technically Bongsun is the one who's dating him but in total she had about 10 minutes of screentime in both episodes. I really dislike the way they did this.

I think they should have had Soonae being forcibly out in ep 8 and made her realize that her grudge was not bc she's a virgin. I thought that her being around water would have brought up memories of her being drowned and she'd realize she was actually murdered (I'm confused as to why she's not investigating the cause of her death more tbh). But now they've made a big mess.

I think ep 9 is a wash since Sunwoo was just enduring most of the time. The best two moments in ep 9 were the kiss/confession with Bongsun and holding hand/let's just start like this with Soonae. I can't really fault Soonae to fall hard for Sunwoo here. I do agree with you that in ep 10, Soonae has too much time with Sunwoo for my liking, but I don't think it is a big mess though. We gotta wait see whether Soonae will stay in Bongsun body and realize that her grudge was not bc she's a virgin or she will slip out of Bongsun and then discover something. Either way it will set Soonae on investigating her death. More time for Bongsun with Sunwoo then? With the pace they have shown so far regarding the murder, I will not be surprised to see things start to move quickly.

That's valid. Still, what's even worse than the personality issue that is that all the important parts of building a relationship are happening to Soonae instead of Bongsun. Bongsun doesn't know the things that Soonae has learned (Sunwoo's past of being bullied, his whole situation with Lee PD). Likewise, so much of what Sunwoo knows about Bongsun is a lie. He thinks "Bongsun's" dream is to have a farm with a restaurant, that she never went on a trip, has never been to a theme park, etc.

For me, this is not a shipping thing, it's a poor storytelling thing. Who are the viewers supposed to root for? It's not that Soonae's experience of a loveless young life is not sympathetic, because it is. But if we know how her story is going to end (most likely, unless they go full makjang), she's not going to be in the picture at the end. So it feels a little fruitless to focus on her 95% of the time.

I agree completely! It feels like a bait-and-switch, because Bongsun was made out to be the MC but she's barely a side character. I'm okay with Soonae being the MC, but I feel like they're missing out on the real emotional meat of her story—her figuring out the cause of her death and coming to terms with that. It's much more important than her experiencing love, imo.

Yes, I completely agree with you on the relationship building part. I just hope that the screentime balance would start to tip over to Bongsun already.

I don't think it's a shipping thing either. For me, Soonae has never been in the picture since the beginning. I am watching to see how Soonae helps Bongsun with her life and relationship and how Bongsun can help Soonae solve her murder. I do think they did a poor job on Bongsun, by making her less of a mc and putting too much spotlight on Soonae. I just hope they don't go full makjang haha. Too many shows I enjoyed have turned out that way ...

Oh My Ghostess: Episode 9

by javabeans | August 3, 2015 |

ghostess9-00360a.jpg

…and we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming! Thanks for being patient while we got recaps out, since our KCON weekend took a huge chunk out of the recapping schedule. But I’m happy to be back on track with Oh My Ghostess, which continues to bring on the funny while pushing our characters on toward growth. Our ghost is as indefatigable as ever, but turns out even the dead have a few things to learn about respect, and I’m glad to see that strides are made. Everything gets a little more entangled and complicated, but in a good way.

Preview for Ep 11:

Translation:

Sun-Woo starts doing his push-ups as he mutters to himself ...

Sun-Woo : I will definitely make you gasp with sighs of delight and admiration unceasingly.

Sun-Woo telling Bong-Sun : Earlier, you kept pestering me. It seems as if you would "die" if you don't do it. (Implying making love with SW).

Bong-Sun or rather Soon-Ae exclaiming aloud : It's pitch dark...and you just dashed into the room...it really gave me a big fright...

Soon-Ae assures Bong-Sun : Even though when I am gone, Chef will still be with you by your side.

Bong-Sun : I really don't know if Chef will always remain with me by my side.

Soon-Ae tells Shaman : I have heard that I actually committed suicide...

Sung-Jae mumbling to himself : What is really you real/true identity, Na Bong-Sun?

Sun-Woo hugging Bong-Sun with Soon-Ae looking on at them...

Sun-Woo : Because of you, I am really going insane, Na Bong-Sun.

Oh My Ghostess: Episode 10

by girlfriday | August 4, 2015 |

ghostess10-00231a.jpg

Love is in the air, but along with all of the giddy highs of romance comes a new set of complications for our lovebirds—namely that there are technically three birds in this nest. When your love triangle involves the dead, it raises some interesting questions and crosses a lot of wires, even when all of your messages are happy fluttering hearts and swoony looks.
