Hanryu Pia Interview

Last year on November, they made a Japanese debut with the single “Shalala Ringâ€, a group of shining princes, NU’EST, will release their first album “Bridge the World†on November 18th. They challenge forth with all tracks being original Japanese songs! Now we will directly ask all members who are in their twenty’s, and have grown up well within this year!

– – Finally the Japanese album will release as well. First off, please share with us what kind of album it has become.

JR: All tracks are original Japanese tracks, and that is our 1st Album. It consists of wide range of genres, so I believe that people will be able to enjoyably listen to it.

– – The member’s first solo track, Minhyun’s “The day I fall in loveâ€, is also nice, isn’t it~. You’ve first performed it in the autumn tour, how was it like singing it?

Minnhyun: It was my first solo song as a singer, and because of that I was very nervous before the live. I was also pressured thinking, “I must sing it wellâ€, but as I started singing on stage, I soon fell into the world of the song and was able to sing it well

– – Were you able to see Minhyun’s proud moment?

JR: The members weren’t able to see it because we were changing at that time.
Ren: But we saw it during rehearsal! It’s a song that suits Minhyun~. I heard it and felt moved by it!

– – The title track “Bridge the World†as well as “The day I fall in loveâ€, were composed by Yamamoto Katsuhiko, who worked on some of TVXQ’s songs. As a fan of TVXQ, Minhyun, were you happy?

Minhyun: Of course! It’s made to remember a past love, but it’s really a type of music I love. I want many people to hear it already (excitedly)

– – Speaking of, didn’t all the members go see TVXQ’s concert in Tokyo Dome?

Minhyun: Yes. It was the first time going to see TVXQ seniors’ live, and the 3 hours went by so fast…… We learned a lot. They danced so well, to the point I wondered if their bodies were even connected. I watched them thinking “I want to be like the seniors!â€

– – This album is full of very nice songs, but could you tell us the song you like?

Baekho: Mine is “Forever after the rainâ€. The lyric is good and it’s a song that moves you. I really recommend my solo part! Please listen to my attractive voice well (lol)
Aron: For me, it’s “Let’s go Crazy!†It’s a song you can get crazy with (lol). It’s a very fun song as well as a song that we can enjoy with the fans. The dance is funny as well.
Minhyun: Yeah, we would love it if we can all dance together
Ren: Speaking of dance, the dance for “Cherry†is cute! The melody and the dance are cute, but the lyric is kind of sexy
JR: Ren is also cute on stage! As for me, it’s “Access to Youâ€. There’s lots of power that it falls perfect for an opening of a live.

– – Of course, Minhyun’s favorite is your solo track “The day I fell in loveâ€, right?
Minhyun: We talked about my solo song earlier, so I’ll talk about “A wonderland where we fall in love†(lol). It’s an uplifting song that we can enjoy during lives with fans.

– – The lead track “Bridge the World†and the movie theme song “Cherry†both have Japanese and English versions, right?

Minhyun: That’s right. The album “Bridge the World†carries a theme of us building a bridge around the world with our songs, so we also did an English version so people of other countries can also understand it. I’m used to hearing English, so I thought that it would be okay singing it, but when we went to the recording, it was hard…… It took longer than Japanese

– – One who’s good at English is Aron who lived in America, right!

Minhyun: Aron, he finished very fast. Right?
Aron: Yes, it’s easier to sing in English, so… (smiles)

– – JR’s rap must’ve been hard, right?

JR: It was. There were several parts I couldn’t do, so I had Aron swap with me. That’s why the rap parts are different in Japanese and English versions. Please listen and try comparing it.

– – Aron, which member is good at English?

Aron: Truthfully? Uhm…….
Minhyun: I have confidence!
Baekho: Me too!
Minhyun: Actually, Ren, JR and I are not good (lol)
Aron: Yes (lol). The one who was good was Baekho

– – “To build a bridge around the world with music†is the theme of the album, “Bridge the Worldâ€, so with that said, you have visited several countries to do lives, right? About how many countries have you went to?

Minhyun: I think about 15

– – Which country left you an impression?

Minhyun: The first tour in South America left an impact on me. People in South America were very enthusiastic to the point that our songs couldn’t be heard because of the cheers

– – Did anything interesting happen in South America?

Ren: There was one for me! Several fans came to see us at the airport, and I got touched on the butt. About 5 times.
All: Aa~~! (dying in laughter)
Ren: I turned around, but I couldn’t tell who touched my butt (lol) Minhyun: Even during the hi-touch event, the people in South America hugged us, kissed us on the cheek, etc. out of the blue and we were shocked! But, Ren, you like these kinds of things, right?
Ren: Yes (smiles)
JR: All of our fans, please kiss Ren!
All: Ahaha (lol)

– – There might be someone who will really do it! Where would you like to go during your own time?

JR: For me, Thailand. We went to an island called Krabi for work and it was really fun so I would like to go with my friends and swim and such~

– – Wait, you can’t swim, can you?

JR: That’s right. So with floaties (lol)
All: Ahaha (lol)

Ren: For me, Paris! The town I fell in love with since childhood from seeing through books. We have also went there during tour. The Eifel tour was really pretty~. I took several pictures. Next time I want to go when I’m off.
JR: Pictures, referred to by Ren are not selfies, he gets it taken by the staffs or us, the members, but even though he’s getting it taken by someone, if it’s bad to him, he gets angry. That irritates me!
Minhyun: He makes us take it over and over, so it gets annoying that we just take it however continuously (lol)
Ren: The members, they are not good at taking pictures, they don’t have sense~. If the members take it, my face turns out big, so I’ll just ask our staffs
Minhyun: Sorry, I’ll study (lol)

– – And you, Minhyun?

Minhyun: Japan is good. We haven’t really had time to have fun in Japan yet. Lately, I have picked up interest on photography, so I would like to take a picture of the shrine in Kyoto
Baekho: Japan for me too. I want to go on the Ferris wheel and such~

– – Why don’t you both travel around Japan together?

Minhyun & Baekho: Rather not! (refused immediately)
Aron: For me it’ll be my hometown, LA! I want to meet my friends and family. Maybe going to Disney land too.
Minhyun: I’ve went to Disney sea and USJ in Japan before
JR: I was told that Disney sea is most thrilling

– – Really? There isn’t any thrilling rides or anything

JR: Right? I was fooled by our manager! In Disney Land we can’t drink alcohol, but in Disney sea we can, so that was the reason. After 3 months, I went and learned the truth. That made me upset!

– – (lol). Now, in the magazine “Hanryu Pia issue 12/31†(releasing on November 21st), I have heard about everyone’s “turning point in growthâ€, and really, comparing now to when you debut in Japan, you all have grown not only in performance, but also in mentality and looks. You have grown well!

JR: But since we are always together, we don’t know where each of us have grown in. The thing we can feel is, that everyone has left the teens

– – What’s something you felt “I’ve become an adult†since turning 20?

JR: Ren just turned 20, so he’s still a kid (lol)
Ren: No I’m not! Minhyun is the kid. He comes to bother me every day, isn’t that something a kid does?
JR: That’s because Ren is cute (lol)
Ren: I’ll forgive him because I’m nice… (bragging look)

– – Bothering someone you like, Minhyun, you’re like a kindergartner.

Minhyun: Not a kindergartner, I’m like an elementary student. 5th grade (self-satisfied look)
JR: I’m like a middle schooler

– – 2nd year? * (t/n: 8th grade in USA)
JR: Ah……, let’s say 3rd year* (lol) (t/n: 9th grade in USA)

– –Although NU’EST are growing remarkably, do you have any goals for the future?

Ren: First is the success of this album “Bridge the Worldâ€. Then to make an album in Korea then make a new song in Japan. I hope we get 1st on Oricon.
Baekho: 1st is good, but for me, with my voice, I want to become a singer that would echo everyone. Yeah~ I said something cool just now (lol)
Aron: My goal is to be able to go to Tokyo Dome with our fans, that’s something further down the road. For this wish to come true, right now, we are working hard
Minhyun: For me, I’m not yet satisfied with my own stage performance, so I want to practice more and become a nice singer who can move people with my voice.
JR: As for me, if everyone’s wishes come true, I’ll be good (self-satisfied look)

– – Leader, he’s cool! I’ll look forward to your activities in 2016 too!

Ren: Yes! Next year, as well, I would like to make great memories together with the fans through new experiences!
JR: For the members wish to come true, I’ll work real hard. This year we had several activities in Japan, in which we made great memories. Next year we will have to have “SHOW TIME 4â€!
