A-mei or A-Mei (Chinese: 阿妹, pinyin: Ä€mèi), stylized as a MEI since 2014, is the stage name of the aboriginal Taiwanese pop singer and songwriter Chang Hui-mei (張惠妹).  She made her debut in the world of music in 1996, achieving rapid commercial success. She has been called a diva of the Mandarin pop music scene and the "Pride of Taiwan". She has won numerous music awards and is popular within Mandarin-speaking world.

Wrapup

The Golden Melody Awards have come and gone. Soon the AOTW threads will go back to normal instead of focusing on the nominees. I'm going to finish off this series by featuring the winner of the Best Mandarin Female Singer. The winner of the Best Mandarin Male Singer award, Eason Chan, will be featured at a later time.

A-Mei is one of the biggest names in Cpop having been in the industry for 18 years and releasing 18 albums. People usually name Jolin Tsai and Elva Hsiao as the "divas" of Cpop, but A-Mei is right up there with them. Not only is she a talented singer, but she is very versatile. Her last few albums have shown a level experimentation that has has paid off and pushed herself forward. Admittedly, I have only listened to the albums from Star onward and I can only assume what her music was like before then, but I think she has opened herself up to a new audience now. It feels like she has captured the attention of people who would not normally be fans of her previously.

Not only has she just won Best Mandarin Female Singer with the release of "Faces of Paranoia (Only the Paranoid Survive)", but she has a very real chance of repeating next year with "AMIT2". I was waiting for a second album from her Amit persona for years. After postponements and a release of an A-Mei album, it finally came out and I was not disappointed. It is one of the best Cpop albums to come out this year, if not the best.

Do you prefer her music as AMei or Amit?

Also, international fans may name Jolin or Elva before her, but in Taiwan and China, Amei is regarded more highly.

Hard to say because Faces of Paranoia Amei feels different from older Amei. And Amit2 feels different from Amit1. I'm going to just say i prefer who she is in the last two albums over her older stuff. I like that she's trying different sounds and putting out more interesting music.

edit:

Also anything i say will be from an international fan's point of view lol. I'm not going to pretend to know what's popular over there.

Heah, personally I prefer her older stuff and classic ballads but I dig that she's trying to experiment and evolve. Since I'm not a huge fan of hers ot doesn't bother me so much, I just wait to see if anything catches my interest.

That's fair, I just wanted to add some perspective from their home markets. You're right about the international fans point of view in general. I think Jolin and Elva are infinitely more marketable and appealing to western markets, both look, style and music wise, than Amei.

ooh thank you for this thread! I only know one song of hers, and I heard it in the movie Suzhou River. It's "解脫/Jie Tuo". It's such a beautiful song.

I checked out all her songs in this thread, and I think I like her ballad songs a bit better, since her voice is very emotional. I loved the music videos for Do you still want to love me and Give the work a break.

+ I just want to share this video of her singing 解脫/Jie Tuo live (starts at 2:18) (*can't embed, sorry..  :rlytearpls: )

Amei and Jolin aren't from the same generation ....Amei has been a star since the late 90s...considered a legend...

Jolin happened like years after....status-wise, she's like Britney spears and Amei is like Mariah Carey ...

but I really never cared for Amei's music...they were so corny and dated back then...typical commercial KTV ballads...

cpop was taking a step backwards because of ppl like her.....although she's a good singer, I thought she's overrated...

her Amit stuff is much better though

I've always respected A-mei. Her music style is more to my liking than her other peers like Jolin and Elva. I think they're both overrated tbh.

She has a certain aristry and aura about her that makes her stand out. I hope she wins female artist of the year next year. Her music is great.
