This is usually based on increase of style and self-confidence (and potentially one's squad). (cr: urbandictionary.com) So which groups had the best transformation from debut til now? It could be style-wise, song quality-wise, or performance quality. I think most groups from pre-2009 had a style glo-up. As far as songs, I have to mention Stellar! Rocket Girl remains one of the worst songs in kpop history, but they came back in 2013 with the sweet and gentle Study which was a HUGE improvement already.
