爱è¦å¤šçŽ°å®ž
我输得多讽刺
åƒä¸ªå‚»åä¸€æ ·å¤æ³¨ä¸€æŽ·

ài yào duŠxiàn shí
wǒ shū de duŠfěng cì
xiàng gè shǎ zi yī yàng gū zhù yī zhì

How realistic does love have to be?
What a mockery it is that I have lost,
Like a fool, betting everything on a single toss of the dice.

爱è¦å¤šæ”¾è‚†
æ‰å†²å¾—ç ´ç†æ™º
è¦æ‰¾å¤šå°‘åŽä¸½çš„托辞

ài yào duŠfàng sì
cái chÅng de pò lÇ zhì
yào zhǎo duŠshǎo huá lì de tuŠcí

How wanton does love have to be
In order to break through reason?
How many fancy excuses must one find?

爱è¦å¤šæ˜Žæ™º
æ‰ä¸ä¼šè¢«é„™è§†
能够容下所有人的é¢å

ài yào duŠmíng zhì
cái bù huì bèi bÇ shì
néng gòu róng xià suǒ yǒu rén de miàn zi

How sensible does love have to be
In order to not be looked upon with disdain?
To be able to allow everyone to hold on to their dignity[1]?

爱è¦æ²¡ç‘•ç–µ
这梦想多幼稚
为了无谓的事情 挖空了心æ€

ài yào méi xiá cī
zhè mèng xiǎng duŠyòu zhì
wèi le wú wèi de shì qíng / wÄ kÅng le xÄ«n sÄ«

Love must be free of flaws—
How naive is this dream!
Having racked one's brains over meaningless things.

Hey. Love, how realistic does love have to be?
Hey. Love, how wanton does love have to be?
Hey. Love, how sensible does love have to be?
Hey. Love, how can love be free of flaws[2]?

爱è¦å¤šçŽ°å®ž
我输得多讽刺
以为拗得过你们的压制

ài yào duŠxiàn shí
wǒ shū de duŠfěng cì
yÇ wéi niù de guò nÇ men de yÄ zhì

How realistic does love have to be?
What a mockery it is that I have lost,
Having thought could go against your[3] suppression.

ài yào duŠfàng sì

How wanton does love have to be
In order to break through reason?
In order to disguise your[3] selfishness?

爱è¦å¤šæ˜Žæ™º
æ‰ä¸ä¼šè¢«é„™è§†
æ‰èƒ½æ´»å¾—没他们的影å

ài yào duŠmíng zhì
cái bù huì bèi bÇ shì
cái néng huó de méi tÄ men de yÇng zi

How sensible does love have to be
In order to not be looked upon with disdain?
In order to live without their shadows?

Love must be free of flaws—
How naive is this dream!
Ultimately what has one gained, what graces?

T/N:

[1] 容下所有人的é¢å: this literally says "to have the capacity to contain everyone's face" wherein the meaning of "face" is the same as the following Chinese idioms that English adopted: "lose face", "save face", "give face" etc. It refers to honor, respect, dignity, such that when everyone can have "face", nobody is humiliated or disgraced.

[2] 爱è¦æ€Žæ ·æ‰èƒ½æ²¡æœ‰ç‘•ç–µ: this is not a rhetorical question doubting the possibility of a flawless love; it is literally asking how can one make this possible.

[3] 你们的压制 and 你们的自ç§: in both cases, the "your" is plural.
