Let's talk about the Four Dan Actresses

Recommended Posts

Of all the Four Dan Actresses, I have come to this ranking in terms of acting:

1. Zhou Xun

2. Zhang Ziyi

3. Zhao Wei

4. I was struggling to fill this in because Xu Jing Lei is more commonly know in the Four Dan gang while Gong Li obviously has the advantage.

Not to mention Shu Qi. She is just pure perfection. Btw, Li and Fan Bingbing are terrible at acting tbh

And then we have the new Four Dan which consists of: Yang Mi, Tiffany Tang, Liu Yifei and NiNi but this list is highly controversial

So How would you rank the Old and New Four Dan?

Zhou Xun >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

For receipts, check out these two scenes:

  • In Suzhou River, when her character Moudan realised what her 'boyfriend' was up to; and
  •
  • In Perhaps Love, when her character Sun Na realised what she was being asked to do if she wanted to get her big break.

Truly extraordinary actress    :ahmagah:

It helps that she's easy on the eye too   :)  Plus, she sings too; I love her husky voice :chu:

I would rate Li Bing Bing acting is better than Zhao Wei though.

If it a rank based on acting alone, the new one doesn't have a chance. I think Ni Ni has a potential to go far in the near future. She has like automatic success debut in a movie industry world (like Tang Wei) and I heard alot of praise about her too. I haven't seen her acting yet though.

and you should have honorable mention to Tang Wei too

I would go with...

Zhou xun

Zhang ZiYi

Gong Li

Shu Qi

Zhao Wei was not one of the Big 4 though.

And the younger Big 4 are Liu Yi Fei, Liu Shi Shi, Tiffany Tang and Yang Mi, at least the most non-controversial one.

She is!!

My Fair Princess was hugeeeeeeeee and the list was created in 2000, just a year after MFP.

The term was coin referring the most bankable young actress in early 2000's and My Fair Princess and Zhao Wei was a huge trend that time (even for a long time).

I know she was huge, but I didn't hear much about her being one of the Big 4 as the list were usually consists of actresses who hit it big through the work of Zhang Yi Mou. The last I remember was Gong Li, Zhang Zi Yi, Zhou Xun and Tang Wei.

I mean I know that she was phenomenal, but it's like she's recognized separately from the Big 4. Maybe there're different versions from time to time I guess, I didn't keep my eyes on that much.

Tang Wei was hitting big with Lust, Caution in 2007, so she is definitely not the original.

IDK what u are talking about, but the original list of FourDan is consists of those 4 that OP listed above in 2000.

The term "Four Dan" was first coin after them in 2000.

But I'm not surprise with ur listed though... Gong Li was hugeee (she is like a huge ZhangZiyi rival) and gain tons of acting and international recognition-bigger than some of the originals. Xu Jing Lei also faded in spotlight for a long time. I think Gong Li wasn't listed becuz the term was coin for the new younger trending actresses that time. Gong Li is already a veteran actress (like she started acting in late 80's) and old that time (she was like 35 by 2000 already).

Anyway, that label is not really relevant for along time since there are more popular and well acting actresses were booming.

I just checked, you're right. Tang Wei came to fame later than Zhao Wei, I guess that makes sense why I remember the list with her since it's a "newer" list.

Nah, the Four Dan “四å°èŠ±æ—¦â€ has nothing to do with Zhang Yimou.  Rather, mainland China had four actresses who had their breakout roles in and around year 2000:

Back in July 2000, the Chinese media had acclaimed 4 Peking Opera doyens as The Four Famous Actresses (“四大åæ—¦â€), and from the later part of year 2000 to the beginning of 2001, the newspaper《å—方都市报》drew inspiration from that to generate discussion as to the equivalent for screen actresses.  The four that was eventually named, were met with universal acceptance and approval.[2][3][4][5]

Gong Li was not considered because she had established her credentials much earlier.

Shu Qi was not considered as she's a Hong Kong actress (originally from Taiwan).

The two Bingbings and Tang Wei came to the fore much later.
