Gigantic girls take over your favourite Tokyo tourist spots

As a tiny island packed with millions of people, Japan knows all about the small things. From compact serving sizes to tiny houses on narrow streets, everything here is designed for convenience to help cope with the stress of overcrowding and the real possibility of stepping on someone else’s toes.

Now, as Japan throws itself into the 21st century, it’s looking towards the bigger things: its place in the wider context of Asia and the Pacific Region; the 2020 Olympics and, why not; gigantic girls.

Unlike the slightly chubby women referred to as “marshmallow girls“, these new ladies popping up around Tokyo are truly enormous. It’s all part of an intriguing new art project called Tokyo Gigantic Girls, which portrays office ladies, maids, schoolgirls and joggers as Godzilla-like giants, towering over some of Tokyo’s most popular tourist spots in artwork and videos.

“Make-up†is a short clip featuring a female student walking through the streets of Akihabara, setting glasses and plates rattling in a nearby café with every gigantic step.

When she catches her reflection in the many windows of a towering karaoke building, it’s the perfect chance to apply some make-up and curl her eyelashes.

The video titled JK stars a joshi kosei, or female high school student, in a typical pose, with her bag slung over one shoulder, earphones plugged in and thumbs furiously texting.

If the landscape looks familiar, that’s because it was filmed in Jinnan, Shibuya.

Maid, meanwhile, depicts a yawning, sleepy maid who appears to have escaped the café scene and is now carelessly toying with trains and flashing a fair bit of flesh at Otsuka Station in Toshima.
