Buying books in college... help!

Uhm... I just started being a college student, and I'm looking for advice about books...

I'm thinking of not buying books, and just do some xerox, or do something other than buying since those books are expensive...Aside from tuition, it is one of the expensive things for school...

I am also thinking of just having the soft file of those books, if I can ever find some...Like pdf files, so I am also looking for sites where I can download educational e-books...

Any thoughts?

Another free option I did if I couldn't find them online was to borrow them from the library if they had them. My school's library had textbooks specifically at a certain place you had to go to and they'd give you a time limit for how long you could keep it and only within the building (dunno if it might be the same for you).

It worked out ok since the time limit was 3 hours and it helped me focus because I knew I had to focus and get my stuff done.

I heard you can buy pdf files of those books online.. It’s cheaper.. and you can study them on your phone/laptop.. I do that

Yes.. I know that.. And thats the first thing I did for searching for books.. Thats why Im lookinh for sites.. Thanks.. :D

I'm studying chemical engineering and textbooks are hella expensive, so I usually download it from libgen.org, type the name of the book or the doi code and you'll get your book

Thanks.. Anyways, I tried visiting the site but it is not loading or available..

If none of the above suggestions work you could always try buying them second hand. When I was at uni the class above me on my course always sold their second-hand books onto us for cheap after they were finished with them and we did the same.

Oh.. Yeah... Thanks.. Thats a good idea.. I didnt think of that.. But maybe they do not have the same book...uhm.. Thanks anyways.. Ill try.. :D

You could try a textbook exchange or buying off previous students, it is usually cheaper

I would try searching your library website, if they have a request it program you can get them to hold the book for you. I think it might be a hassle, but it's also one of the easiest, no strings attached options. Just stop by on your way to class after getting the librarians to hold the book.

Also, I bookmarked this link from tumblr that has some options for ~free pdfs online. The list was made in 2013, but the links still work:

Good luck! College books are expensive as hell, lol.

if you're willing to save money and stick around a bit go to the library

I'll try...Thanks... :D

You can try searching for the pdf files on torrent sites, like kickass or piratebay.

I tried but can't find them...But I found some, but old versions... :'(

I bought most of my books from Amazon, or I check them out from the library's Reserve section.

Thanks... :D

  • 2 weeks later...

If you only need a few chapters from I book, I suggest going to your school library and scan it.

That's how I did it atleast. They said we need to read chapter 5,6 and 8 or something from a book that costed like 50$. Lol smh..

Every book that was needed in class, there needed to be at least 1 copy in the library that you couldn't take home

Just scanned it inside the library (made sure the librarian was on a coffee break) and made a nice pdf file from it (my school got an Adobe Reader X license or something, it was really nice for organizing the right pages and stuff) and our whole class used it and everyone saved 50$! (and it was legal, since it was for studying purposes only, heheheh :hurr: )

here's a huge list of sites that offer free textbook pdfs!

another option is that if your professor writes down the exact chapters you need for the class on the schedule, there's places you can download free trials of books for a certain number of days and you can just screenshot them! that's what i did for my calculus class haha

good luck at university!
