lastly why is Yoona ahead of Sooyoung

They are actually about even, both have great musicality and precision, Sooyoung has better stage presence but Yoona has better executed movements. Yoona has been more consistent than Sooyoung recently though, which is why she might be slightly better.

Hi guys .

So I’ve been enoying reading all of the pages cause next to dancing & watching dance, I love discussing dance!  I wanted to post her before but I like how you are all very observational and extenisive with your wording and I’m not really like that and not confident with my English hehehe.

I find myself agreeing with alot of your reasoning but then sometimes disagreeing with your conclusions. I think it has to do with different view of aspects of dance that I think is more or less important, so I wanted to give my two cents on those, if you don’t mind.

In a group of good dancers I find musicality KEY in differentiating the best from the rest. A dancer’s ability to ‘feel’ the music (like you guys described), natural sense of rhythm, gives a (given) choreography more life by ‘coloring’ it better. This dancer would catch my eye/the audience's.

A not-so musical dancer can be great technically, hitting on the given beat perfectly, but performance wise it is too ‘step-driven’ with no own interpretation. Dancing on top of the music rather than inside the music. It's good, but not that great.

Therefore I find Boa the lesser dancer than Hyoyeon/Kahi and Sehun the better dancer than Luhan. Eventhough our observation on musicality is the same :)

There are other aspects as well which I find important. Hyoyeon more versatile and I find her a hard hitter.

This one is probably really unpopular but Sehun may be half assing sometimes that does not takes away his musicality, his low center and body control. After that ‘lazy’ comment remark he definitely stepped up his game and is def better than Kris, although Kris improved heaps. Also I think Luhan is still a good dancer, he’s energetic and excecutes the choreo well.

I had always considered precision, control and technique before musicality, but I might have to reconsider how I judge lol since I agree with a lot of what you're saying.

But, I don't agree that Sehun is a better dancer than Luhan. Yes, he has most certainly showcased a better sense of musicality than Luhan, but Luhan is still a lot more well balanced and more consistent. Sehun's musicality doesn't make up for his half-assness, but as you've said he's been doing better recently. If he continues to perform with more enthusiasm more consistently then perhaps I'll reconsider my judgement but for now I still stand by Luhan >>> Sehun.

But your BoA and Hyoyeon comparisons have really piqued my interest. I feel the need to do more research and ask my dance teacher for advice.

Hyorin>Yuri? I think Hyorin should be in Yoona's level or slightly better. And I think Hyo>Min not Hyo/> Since Hyo has shown great power and control and is more versatile.

Yeah sorry, I said to take it with a grain of salt. :hehe:

And yeah Hyo is definitely better than Min, I don't know why I put "/" there. And Yuri is better than Hyorin, but I don't think Hyorin has enough material tbh and we haven't seen the full extent of her capabilities imo.

I personally think Hyorin is better ? Yuri tends to make a lot of mistakes and is kind of like Bora in a way that she executes but doesn't really interpret ? But I'm Hyorin biased so I watched more videos of Hyorin than of Yuri. I am however a SONE too, so I saw a lot of group videos and I found Sooyoung to be better too (at interpreting I mean).

But Yuri's shown better musicality and more versatility.

I know Jess is a mess nowadays, but in their debut era, how good was she?

Starts at 0:19

She was better than Yuri and the 2nd best in the group. She even outperformed Hyoyeon occasionally.

Who's the best and worst dancer in kpop?

Not sure about best overall but for females it is potentially Hyoyeon if you use Pinklett's criteria.

Worst dancers are probably Jessica/Tiffany/TOP maybe? There might me some worse ones out there that I'm not aware of.

how can you say that Jessica is the worst dancer aren't you contradicting yourself? you just said that she was a good dancer

not having good stamina or being lazy at times doesn't make you the worst dancer

Jessica WAS a good dancer. But Jessica has not just been lazy at times, her dancing is lazy literally ALL the time these days. Jessica has not had a performance that can be considered good for quite a while now and it's only natural that if she hasn't been trying very hard for the last two years or so that her skills have depreciated massively. Her dancing is pretty much on Tiffany's level now.

her skills might have depreciated a lot but she is not on Tiffany's level. Tiffany can't dance to save her life.

Tiffany might put effort and she is a hard worker I can't deny that, but she doesn't have a natural sense of rhythm. My point is that even though Jessica is lazy and not as good as she was before, she is still has more dancing skills than Tiffany. I don't think enthusiasm is enough to consider Tiffany a better dancer.

Tiffany is definitely not better than Jessica lol I totally agree. That being said, Tiffany has shown improvement from debut and while she may never be a good dancer, she's always shown enthusiasm and the will to do better. Present day Jessica executes her movements no better than Tiffany technique-wise. And whilst I also agree that Jessica does have a natural sense of rhythm, if she never showcases these days, it can't really be judged.

Debut Jessica >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Present day Jessica = Tiffany

you obviously not gonna change your mind and think that Jessica is decent because she doesn't show enthusiasm. Let's wait for their comeback and see if Jessica doesn't show any improvement and show more enthusiasm in her performances. I usually don't like to insist on things, but I have to cuz I think it's unfair that you consider her as bad as Tiffany (nothing against her)

I already said all I need to say. The end.

It's not just enthusiasm, Jessica's skills have depreciated in pretty much every aspect, including her rhythm, technique, musicality, flow, control, stage presence etc. I really hope she does improve because she still has potential.

What do you guys think of Whee In? Skip to 1:49.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ESEa0RMO-A

I figured you'd ask.   Ever since the video appeared on the Mamamoo thread, I've been replaying it non-stop lol.

From the video, Whee In has demonstrated good musicality which is great as a dancer moreso towards the end where she definitely demonstrated her prowess.

She seemed a tad stiff at parts though which made some of her movement look forced or not fluid enough (2:28) and she needs to work on her dynamics because some of her movements were slightly too loose and not sharp enough. She also definitely needs to work on engaging the audience/viewer using her facial expressions and she should stop looking at the floor because that's not a good habit (although I'll give her the benefit of the doubt because there technically was no audience in front of her to perform to.)

I can't really judge her consistency or versatility because it's only one performance but from this performance she looks like a very solid dancer with huge potential to grow into a great performer.

sorry don't have time at the moment to browse through the thread, but may I know who is the best female idol dancer? and also for male. please and thank you :)

For females it's BoA/Hyoyeon, but it's debatable between the two (Hyoyeon might have the slight edge tho). I'm not too sure for male idols; in general it's harder to judge male idols than female idols.

oh okay thanks. well SM has the best for females then good for them. could you rank yoona sooyoung and yuri? :)

v

I'd say it's Yuri > Yoona/Sooyoung tbh.

Yuri has the edge over Yoona and Sooyoung with her natural sex appeal and she looks more comfortable when dancing than them. Yuri is similar to Hyoyeon in the sense that they both make the dances look effortless and are both able to change the dynamics of a dance to suit their own respective styles, something that Sooyoung has done to a lesser extent but Yoona has yet to really show.

I would say that Yoona is slightly better than Sooyoung tho.

Ty again, could you answer me about T-ara? xD after this i'll stop ahaha

I'll rank OT6 (because if I rank Hwayoung, I'll feel obligated to do Areum and I know nothing about her)

Jiyeon > Hyomin > Eunjung > Qri/Boram/Soyeon

Jiyeon is arguably the best dancer, only because she clearly has the best musicality and fluidity. Her problem is half-assing. Hyomin is a close second and Eunjung soon after. Eunjung suffers from over-dancing, since she tends to put too much into her moves at times. The last three are pretty much even although Soyeon is probably the worst since she has regressed since debut. Qri tends to rush into her moves, and Boram is the stiffest member.

Overall though, T-ara as a whole are really good, particularly at feet/leg movements. They have all displayed very good body control (including Hwayoung and Areum) are one of the better girl groups at dancing.

Is Luna as good as Yuri or better/worse?

Luna's better.

Hello guys, could you please rate Girl's Day dancing? I can't find any dance practice videos for both songs nor group-focused fancams, so I'll just link the MV dance versions

Expectation

Female President

Sojin /> Yura > Minah > Hyeri

Hey there!

Okay, so I've been into BTS and they are all pretty good at dancing, especially Jimin, J-hope & Jungkook. So I was wondering, from the three, who is better at dancing and why?

idk if this has been mentioned before sawwry

All three of them killed it in that video! Here's my ranking, but I apologise because I don't know their names so I'll just refer to them by their clothing:

hat+white shirt guy > hat+black shirt guy = no hat+black shirt guy

All of them displayed great musicality and good technical accuracy. What it boils down to is consistency during the performance. The two guys with the hats displayed consistency throughout the dance but the one with the white shirt hit the moves slightly better. The guy with no hat in the middle, although great, was not as consistent because he looked slightly tired towards the end.

Interesting, could you probably elaborate a bit? This is surprising I always thought Minah is the worst

Old dance practice vid (when they were still 5)

Generally speaking, Hyeri has shown more consistency than Minah, but Minah is a lot more comfortable and shows more potential. Hyeri has kind of stagnated. The gap between the girls isn't big though.

What do you guys think about this? Just curious  :)

That was good. Some of the moves could have been executed better but overall it was a nice performance. They've got a nice sense of dynamics as well.

Thoughts on Nicole? Remember, Min, Nicole and Hyo used to be a trio  :ahmagah:

i want those abs

Nicole is great dancer. She has good control and nice musicality, and I really hope to see more material from her.

And when was she part of a trio? I'm pretty it was just Min and Hyo that were just a duo together, Nicole was in the US back then.

Is musicality innate or learnable? If it's the first one, would you say between two people, one with good musciality and the other without, through the same amount and intensity of training, the former is always better than the latter?

Musicality does come naturally and most of the time it develops the longer a person dances. As far as I'm concerned musicality can be learned with the right amount dedication primarily to understanding of the music itself and I think everyone does have a natural sense of rhythm that can be developed.

And yes, generally speaking the former would be better but there's always exceptions e.g. Sehun has better musicality than Luhan, but Luhan overall is better. Execution is very important as well, because you may have great musicality but sloppy execution can definitely make your dancing messy.

Can you guys rate this dance practice?

Well the dance isn't very difficult technical wise so they all did well apart from Bom lol. She's got a nice sense of rhythm but the girl can't control her limbs lol.

I'm so happy Dara's not awkward anymore, just like how she used to be pre-debut c:

thoughts about the members dancing?

That was a weak performance overall, not terrible but not good either. Hyoyeon performed the best and Yuri, Taeyeon and Sunny (lol nvm I watched again and she was bad) did okay but they all had their off moments. The rest were being lazy and Tiffany's just a weak dancer already. I've noticed that Jessica's beginning to consistently perform worse than Tiffany throughout this whole promotional cycle tho :c

I know what you mean but i meant just at a dance showcase in general, the only kpop group ive seen with dancing close to this is 2PM and Super Junior

If you look around you'll find that there are quite a few K-pop groups (mainly boy groups) that have performed high energy dances before but like Destiny said, it takes a lot of stamina and that is needed for the rest of a showcase which is why they tend to opt out of doing so.

Do u guys agree that Jay Park and Tae Yang are the best K-pop male dancer ?

The reason why I say this is Both tae and Jay have "flow" / "smoothness" or whatever u want to call it.

They give live to their choreo not simply try to execute it well

I'm late but no, definitely not.

Hey guys, I wanted to ask something. Someone told me that this dance that Minzy performed at 2NE1's AON Tour is a genre of dance - step dance or something? Do you guys know anything about it, and if you do, how did Minzy execute it?

This is the latest performance of it: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNzAxMTI3ODAw.html At 2:55, hope the video is viewable for you guys. It's kind of a far away fancam, sorry >.< But you can see her executing the moves on the stage as well as a bigger view on the screen.

Step dance is a type of dance where the footwork is generally considered to be the most important part of the dance. Tap dancing is a type of step dancing. Traditional step dance usually involves a lot of stomping and clapping.

That video of Minzy is too unclear to judge but it does look like her choreo involved some form of step dance.

This is one of my favorite dance crews. What do you think?

Also, this is clearly the best dance ever

They're pretty good. The moves that they performed together could have been more in sync tho.

And top-raving actually takes a good level of agility to do lol.

Top 5:

1. Kai

2. Taemin

3. Eunhyuk

4. Shindong

5. Yunho

to top 10:

6. Lay

7. Donghae

8. Sehun

9. Luhan

10. Key

** I judged on dancing ability of multiple styles, fluidity, musicality, weaknesses, energy, flexibility, skill (meaning ability to do tricks), and performance (meaning ability to put on a good show with the aforementioned qualities).

I would mostly agree with you except I'd swap Sehun and Luhan around only because of Sehun's lack of consistency between performances. I also think that Xiumin might be a better dancer than Key, but I'm not 100% sure.

do you guys do rankings?

if you do can you rank the top 5 male sm dancers?

if not that's fine(:

& would you say Key is one of top 10?

I would agree with Destiny for the most part, and Key's possibly just as good or better than Xiumin.

Gull, it took you long enough to answer.

OMG I HAVE AGILITY. First time I'm going clubbing, I'm doing that dance along with Ice JJ Fish's moves.

Everyone has some level of agility hun, don't get too excited. :hoplz:

And be careful Ice JJ Fish's dance looks really advanced, I don't think I could pull it off lmao that precision.

What do you guys think of this? Jenna was beyond my favorite from SYTYCD10.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--7dfIrlOpE

A lot of people are saying he ripped off the original choreo but I don't see it except for in the very beginning kind of.

That was a good performance. The transitions between the dynamic changes could have been executed a little better but I really liked it and they are really good performers.

so how well does Jihyun dance?

She's weak, almost as bad as Gayoon. She's inconsistent, awkward and slightly stiff most of the time but she has shown okay skills in the past which indicates that most of her issues are down to her own laziness. That performance you've shown is one of her better performances (despite being restricted by that skirt) and I wish she'd perform more like this. It's her inconsistency and awkwardness that's really letting her down.

So who do you guys think is the best dancer in kpop?

Well I can't really a definitive best dancer but Kai, Hyoyeon, Kahi and to a certain degree BoA and Eunhyuk are amongst the best. They showcase excellent precision, consistency, musicality and versatility. There are many others but those are the dancers that particularly stand out because they are very well rounded.
