01/ Stage – Music & Performance - ONEW

After hearing the news that SHINee World 4 will be held, what was the first thing that came up to your mind?

O: It’s worrisome. This is a serious problem. I want to do a tap dance, but will I be able to hold a performance with my skill? Will I be able to sing a whole song? There were many things that came up all at once. I don’t know if I was just lucky, but I felt a great level of satisfaction because I was able to accomplish all of it.

 

What was your reason on choosing tap dance for your solo stage?

O: I was already learning tap dance as a hobby. I wanted to show to the audience something that I never have shown on stage before. Tap dance is a fascinating genre, once you fall in love it’s hard to get out. I practiced having fun.

 

What is about tap dance that seemed so attractive to you?

O: Actually, it’s very hard even to make a sound for at least once with the tap shoes on. It was hard to even walk on them at first. But after practice and being able to make a sound for once, that once became several times, then that process of those sounds coming together to make choreography for tap dance felt like a competition against myself. That feeling is so thrilling. It relieves my stress.

 

How long did you practice the tap dance you showed during this tour?

O: Actually, tap dance isn’t something you can practice straight away as soon as you planned a choreography thinking ‘let’s make such and such sounds’. I practiced steadily on my own for 4 months and after deciding to do tap dance as my solo stage in concert I practiced 3 more months discussing with the choreographer.

 

Is there any reason behind your interest in tap dance?

O: There was a time when I prepared for a musical and tap dance was part of the stage choreography so I had a chance to learn it. I ended up having to give up on the musical due to surgery of my vocal cords but I continuously learned the tap dance and fell in love with it. Even though it’s such an attractive genre, it’s not very popular. So I had a little hope that I wanted to introduce it to many people through this concert tour.

 

What was the stage you wanted to show it to the fans the most during this concert?

O: It’s very meaningful to me. The first time that I sang a full song after my vocal cords surgery was on SHINee World 4. I personally divide my life as before and after my surgery, and it was the happiest moment after my surgery.

 

You were suddenly in tears near the end of the Seoul concert. What was the reason on your sudden tears?

O: When I’m on stage I get deeply moved to the extent that I’ll cry if something just taps me. If someone next to me cries, it’s so hard to hold back the tears. That day was like that too.

 

But I don’t think you talk very much on stage during concerts.

O: I actually can’t talk very well. And I prefer making jokes more.

 

You approach to the audience on a moving machine during concerts. How do you feel when you are close with the audience?

O: I think audiences who are far from the stage watches us much smaller and feels that we’re much far away. So I really like the times when I’m on a moving machine and approach to fans. Whenever I have to throw a ball, I try to send it as far as I can.

 

Please say a word to the audience.

 

O: Thank you. When we planned SHINee World 4, we made the show thinking ‘No show like this will ever come out again’. Thinking back, I had so much fun on stage so I have confidence that audience had fun watching it too. I hope that you’ll think SHINee’s shows are ‘shows that are trustworthy enough to watch’. We will be SHINee who will plan ‘a much more interesting show’ every time.

 

 

 

 

02/ Backstage: Behind the Show - KEY

 

During SHINee World IV in Seoul, you said “It feels like it’s been such a long time since I did a concert that really makes my heart beatâ€. What did you mean by that?

K: Out of the concerts that I did so far, this was the best concert. I participated in many things about stage, performance, costume concept, etc. so I was especially more proud. It felt very good because I think it was a show that really showed off each of SHINee member’s identity well. I don’t think I was ever fascinated by the liveliness of live concerts more than this one.

 

I think the liveliness of meeting the audience excites the singers on stage more than anything else. The meaning of concerts must be extraordinary right?

K: There are many different kind of shows but concerts are the ones with most fun. It’s a live stage where you work with the audience. I’m making a confession at this belated time but I was actually afraid of singing. It might sound strange but it was awkward to sing with a loud voice. But I gained confidence after being on musical stages. It’s different from how I used to be when I’m doing a performance or singing. I think I now know the method as I performed on stages and showed my voice a lot. The psychological confidence changed me when I’m on stage.

 

When was the most emotional moment during this concert? Was there a moment that nearly made you cry?

K: There are these times when I could feel the energy of the person next to me. While performing on stage, there are moments when I could feel ‘All five of us are doing really hard’. During the end of ‘Everybody’ in this concert, I could feel that all SHINee members are doing their best in a do-or-die attitude and my tears were going to burst out.

 

Key is also famous for his interest in grooming. Do you take your beauty products when having overseas tours too?

K: Yes. I take all the beauty products that I use. I particularly take my cleansing products. Then I won’t get any skin problems as I use mine. I sometimes take water too. To prevent any problems due to change of water. I also take bath salt for lower-body bathing to use in bathrooms. I occasionally take my massage machines too, I take a massage machine that relaxes my back muscles and a massage machine that brings down the swelling of my face.

 

You were looking at your iPad in the waiting room, do you usually watch movies or listen to songs in waiting rooms?

K: I have a personality of not being able to stay still. If I’m also doing another piece of work, I usually read my script whenever I have free time and for other times I watch Japanese dramas, American dramas or search continuously on Youtube.

 

Please tell us what Key thinks each SHINee member’s strongest point is.

K: Minho is a member who is the center (balance) of the stage. I think the atmosphere of the stage varies depending on whether there is Minho or there isn’t. His ‘fighting’ power is so great especially. Taemin is strong on live. He is so different when he’s practicing and when he’s on stage. To be honest, what I envy the most from Taemin is his peaceful mind. Hahaha. I’m the kind of style who distresses oneself but Taemin always looks relaxed. I am always jealous of Taemin’s carefree side. Jonghyun hyung’s singing skills are like no other. Even though he’s a vocal member, he practices hard on performance and singing. I don’t know where that kind of passion keeps coming out. I thought Onew hyung was a person who had no passion in dance. But he’s actually not. He practices and practices the performance and gestures harder than anyone else. He also showed tap dance performance during SHINee World IV. I thought it was really cool.

 

Do you have anything you wish to say to SHINee colleagues?

K: I want to say that we’re doing well and let’s keep on working hard like now. I think it took us a long time to find the direction of SHINee. Since we’re SHINee who always strived to do something new, we did a lot of experiments too. I think we also had times that we felt like we were lost. Even though it took us time to find the true meaning of SHINee, I’m proud because we’re becoming a more powerful team who can compete with live, aura and performance.

It sounds like a grandiose thing but I’m focusing on texts I want to write and delivering various information from my experience that I really wanted to share so I think I would feel more comfortable if you just read it casually!

Or it could be about the process of the thesis that I’m writing on â€˜The effects of styling education has on adolescents’ self esteem’

Or philosophy and aspect as a stage costume director. I’m planning to show a really diverse range. 

 

The reason why I have so many stories that I want to tell everyone is because I enjoy taking an active part in doing things rather than working passively and also want to show my diverse life style regardless of the area. Not only about music but also k-beauty, k-fashion, etc. I don’t know what kind of area it will be, but I will always research and try hard. I would be really thankful if you show lots of love.
