The Unpopular Opinions Thread (Read OP)

The culture of stans mass streaming, mass buying, mass voting, boosting views, etc.  should be outright condemned. I think a lot of our issues with stan culture would not be as bad if fans weren’t so pressured to put so much money and effort into making (and keeping) their faves successful. When you invest that much of yourself into something, the fear of the results not being good can be intense. And no one wants to settle for #2. It’s a constant competition that gets ugly at times. But if fans were encouraged to just focus on enjoying the content without focusing on the numbers, there would be no reason to engage in fanwars, or send death threats to your faves’ rivals/peers, or pretend to enjoy bad music.

No more streaming parties, no buying things you don’t actually like just to boost sales, no overly biased voting, none of it. These actions are hurting stan culture and ruining the art.

This opinon was persona non grata when Pristin disbanded (people would literally say online "don't blame Fromis!") maybe because it seemed like an attack on innocent Fromis members but I will always believe that whatever issues there were among members in Pristin (which I think is understated since most of them follow each other on IG) one of the main reasons for the end of Pristin was whatever deal Han Sung Soo had with Stone Music/CJ/Mnet to manage/produce first Fromis9 and then Iz*One. The man was literally giving interviews before Pristin had formally disbanded full of praise for Fromis as if Pristin did not exist.

Fromis even debuted (semi-formally) with a song co-written by two Pristin members - Yuha and Kylkyung. I would bet money "Glass Shoes" was originally planned as a potential Pristin song for an album that never happened.

Let's look at the timeline. Pristin's 2nd and last full group album, Schxxl Out, debuted on August 23, 2017. They had a month of full promotions that ended in late September. During that time Kyla also recieved an injury and returned to the States and by all accounts was never told when/if she should come back after that. While Pristin would clean up at the Award Shows (even perfoming at MAMA 2017 as 9 with Chungha, Weki Meki and AKB48) during December and January 2018, they would never perform as 10 again and would never release any more songs/singles/albums as a full group. On May 28, 2018 Pristin V (a sub unit) debuted with "Get It" - compared to the budget of the previous comebacks and MVs it was miniscule and the promotions (barring music shows) barely present. After promos for Pristin V ended in June 2018 - with one exception about Xiyeon - Pledis never commented on Pristin again till disbandment and even the official group Instagram and Twitter was only updated on member birthdays. Various members even had to rely on fan accounts to be in contact with fans and the Vlives that were a core of the Pristin identity were abruptly ended.

Also, Xiyeon, the "Princess of Pledis" who literally gave half her life to the company (yes that is her in After School's "Bang" video as the youngest little girl) and arguably by that point the 3rd most popular member after Nayoung and Kylkyung leaves her post as MC of Show Music Core on January 27 2018. It would be her last individual schedule as a member of Pristin. By October 24, 2018 (just 10 months later) there would be reports that Xiyeon had left Pristin and Pledis. Pledis denied this in their social media accounts and in offical statements (a surprise to many Pristin fans since by October there had been radio silence on any news of the group and the groups's SNS was no longer really updated) claiming that there was no truth to this: "She is still an artist under Pledis and currently working very hard for their next comeback.” The last part of the statement however was almost certainly a lie. Fans knew that Xiyeon had left the dorm months earlier (the second member to vacate after Kyla) due to a leg injury and there was no sign she was training for non-existent comeback that never happened. After that Pledis did not comment on anything related to Pristin again for 5 months until disbandment. After Xiyeon left Show Music Core at the end of January (with the brief exception of Pristin V promotions) - only two Pristin members out of 10 - Nayoung and Kylkyung - had individual schedules or jobs (indeed the rumors were that Pledis had actively refused CFs and other offers for Pristin members). In 2017 when they were active Pristin appeared on several Korean variety shows and music shows, as a full group or in duos. One would think after sweeping ALL the Rookie of the Year Awards they would get offers to appear even more. But...nope. Curious, no? Certainly HSS with his close ties to a chaebol like CJ/Mnet thanks to managing the Off the Record could have gotten them opportunities - if he cared to.

Now Fromis. Fromis was the result of a (rigged) audition Mnet program, Idol School, like P101. It's supposed goal was to create a permanent - not temporary, like IOI, - girl group. Idol School ended on Sept 29, 2017. It was announced at the same time that Han Sung Soo, the founder/CEO of Pledis (and Pristin) would produce and manage the group's debut. Fromis9 debuted with "Glass Shoes" on November 29, 2017 and performed it for the first time in Korea on Dec 15th 2017. Their first EP, To.Heart, debuted on Jan 24, 2018. Under the direction of Han Sung Soo in 2018 alone (a year Pristin as a full group released nothing), Fromis9 would have 3 seperate comebacks. Former Pristin staff and managers were now seen managing and directing Fromis members and events even though supposedly the label managing Fromis9 (Off the Record) was seperate from Pledis. On May 24, 2019, Pristin was unceremoniously disbanded by Pledis with only a press release notification. It was Pledis's first mention of the group in their social media in 5 months. Less than 2 weeks later on June 4, 2019, Fromis9 made its 4th comeback, under the direction of Han Sung Soo, with its Fun Factory album.

The most feasible explanation for the Fall of Pristin was always that HSS and Pledis got an opportunity to make quick money with NO investment or outlay on their part to manage Stone's girl groups and just abandoned Pristin because they no longer needed them or wanted them (despite the millions probably spent in developing all 10 talents during trainee days).  By all accounts "Off the Record" (the label that managed Fromis and then Iz*One) was HSS/Pledis in all but name. HSS was even seemingly OK with with what CJ/Mnet did to his talents not once but twice (Baekho and then Lee Gaeun) in the Produce series. Noticeably when facts came to light that two Pledis artists had been literally cheated out of spots, Pledis had only tepid responses and HSS then did ZERO did to capitalize on Gaeun's popularity despite Pledis being back in the money with Seventeen, a resurgent NUEST and the Stone/Off the Record deal.

None of this is anything negative about the Fromis9 members who obviously are not privy to this. It's not their fault. But why can't it be said that the Fromis/Off the Record deal with Han Sung Soo was the beginning of the end for Pristin? It clearly was.

Mafia In The Morning was never met to be successful. I don't think JYP intended on the song to be successful in Korea but more internationally. Why?

1. No JYP whisper. I realized this after Alchool-Free was released. JYP is tricky, lol. He put his name in song he knew could do good. He knew TWICE could chart better so why put his name on their song. It's not like he could sound out of place or anything in MITM. It could fit perfectly at the beginning after Yuna's "shhh". So why not put it there? Really, JYP has think put his name on song, so why not MITM but puts it on AF??

2. It was released on a Friday. One of the few groups to release on a Friday. Itzy isn't an established group, so why release it on a Friday? JYP think it met for the international market but not Korea's. Alchool-Free was released on a Wednesday & the physical on a Friday. TWICE still do better digital, so of course JYPE wouldn't want to f***k that up.

3. For MITM they mostly promoted international. As matter a fact, I don't think they did any Korean show, probably only music show & performance only.

In the end, MITM wasn't really met to be successful. Of course any company would want their song to be successful. But if they really did, they would have done more. And not nasty JYP only attaching his name to song he thinks will do well, lol.

mnet will not make the same mistake as what they did with ioi, they will not choose the member who already in a establish group....and I can see that what mnet want is a high quality group that can be in this 3 concept....cute cheerful like twice, girl crush like black pink, and elegant majestic like izone. so the  member also need to be high quality skill....that why top 3 in top 9 is important and they know those top 3 will choose their K/J/C cellmate wisely. by the way ...have you notice at the end of ep 2.....those top 3 is J ,K, and C respectively....i see what you did there mnet...that why i say ....the one who hold the power is the JUDGE!

this notion that you have to like everything an artist puts out/does or you’re a “fake” fan is ridiculous. a fan saying they don’t like a song or whatever shouldn’t result in getting hate or having to defend their opinions. it’s a preference and not even a big deal. no one should need to force themselves to like something or have to censor their honest thoughts. there’s way too many kpop fans that don’t seem to understand that and get defensive for no reason. critiquing something doesn’t make you a hater. there’s a difference between shitting on something and having a valid opinion.

Selection bias in Kpop is a thing, especially when it comes to artists after a scandal. I'm seeing statements like, "Soojin brought nothing to (G)I-DLE" "Hyunjoo is much prettier than Naeun, not sure why DSP kept Naeun in April instead of her" and "Chanmi is a much better rapper than Jimin in AOA". Like c'mon people, they may be who they are, but none of these statements are true or reflect reality no matter how much you may hate these idols in question.

Not saying it's wrong to hate on these idols, just saying it's dumb to say these type of things lol

The assumption that NCT is a group with most of their discography consisting of sex related songs is odd. The overwhelming majority of their bsides aren't about sex and their suggestive title tracks are literally only Baby Don't Stop and Make a Wish. Fans obsessively fixate on songs like Whiplash, Love Talk or 119 and give them a lot of views and streams when there's better bsides in the albums those are from (Summer 127, King of Hearts, Dream Run). Therefore the suggestive songs become more known than the rest when it's not representative of their discography.
Maybe it's me who can't pick up on the innuendos but NCTzens see sex everywhere tbh.

This might be a popular & unpopular opinion....?

Popular opinion: Red Velvet is often criticized for their stage presence, most saying their boring & weak (expect for Seulgi & Wendy).

My unpopular opinion: Red Velvet's stage presence is all over the place, not that they’re boring & weak. We have Wendy, Joy, Yeri being happy & cute. Irene looking blank af & Seugli acting like she’s here to murder some btch.

Irene - Not so good with red concept & sometimes look bland with velvet concept.

Seulgi - Over do it especially in red concept. Sometimes she is going too hard & it just throws off the balance of the stage. She needs to learn how to match the energy of the song. But she's always good in velvet concept.

Wendy - Very good in red concept. Sometimes cannot find the right expressions for velvet concept making her look bit stiff.

Joy - She’s on & off, all over the place. Can never keep the energy going. When she is centre/singinv she is okay but once she thinks the camera is off her she goes back to looking blank. I need idols to understand this, not because you're not centre/singing doesn't mean the camera doesn't zoom up on you.

Yeri - She’s okay in the red concept. But sometimes she does these overly cute gesture that makes me cringe. And she sometimes gets lost in velvet concept, basically forgettable. When watching velvet stages, she doesn't really captive the audience.

Red velvet is like the only big 3 group getting away with not being synchronised in dancing. Either that or they don't blend its kinda embarrassing because Aespa's kinda eating them up in that department. At the very least Wendy and Yeri should try changing their facial expressions to suit the concept other than smiling like there is so much you can do that can make up to their dancing skills.

I also think the choreo choices for red velvet are not good, they don't have much highlighted choreo points compared to other girlgroups like Twice or Aespa. You know the arm movement for next level or the leg drop for black mamba. You know twice's I can't stop me start's with the arm swinging motion the spotlight move or the drunk white girl dance in the chorus of alcohol free. But I can't think of one for Red Velvet other than Russian Roulette & Peek-a-boo but that was years ago.

I love it whenever Red Velvet releases a new song because when they do stuff that's crazy and "out there" people get mad and when they do something safe and "easy to digest" people still get mad. People ain't ever satisfied and it's hilarious. My girls are just gonna keep doing their thing.

And the petty part of me almost hopes they never release a song like Bad Boy and Psycho again, so the normies/casuals who are obsessed with that style can go somewhere else...…ok maybe that's a little extreme lol

SuperM should've been a R&B group. Their current concept isn't working out.

Kpop companies should learn how to read western trends better. They are pushing their groups in the West but are so damn clueless. I think they should hire or make a division/department for western trends/promotions.

there’s plenty of reasons to dislike Chen and Bobby but getting married and having a child should not be one of them. if that’s fans breaking point, if that’s crossing the line for them, then something is seriously wrong here. like their oppas have done some ridiculous shit, and they defended them to the moon and back, but a child is where they draw the line? make it make sense.

and it’s insane to me, that having a child is when fans demand and expect an apology. but all the times that Chen and Bobby  should have been held responsible for fucking up and hurting others they were out here crying oppa didn’t mean it. shaming others for wanting feedback and an apology for what they did. but marriage and becoming a parent is what they deem a valid reason for an apology or justify giving them backlash? just insanity. their priorities are fucked.

also people need to quit with the “he did a Chen.” it’s not funny.

I'm probably going to be negged for this, but I can understand why Choi Yujin felt she was overshadowed and not complemented enough in CLC. I got around to watching her Team HYLT performance on GP999 and she didn't really stand out at all, a very similar situation as when she would be in formations in her main group. She's an all-rounder, which is great but that tends to reflect there are performers which may do better in a certain area and would lead to killing parts, which she has a lack of unfortunately both in GP999 (so far) and CLC.

She may eventually debut with the final group, unless MSnake has a say in it, but she should seriously consider debuting as a soloist with her newfound fame if she doesn't make it. Her solo videos on the CLC Youtube and Mnet channel are fantastic so that's why I think that's the case.
